Relating stories keeps the memories alive for those who died in combat. That was the theme in recognizing Memorial Day 2023 in Del Norte County. Post 1381 Commander Dave Cooper led the somber services at the Crescent City cemetery, this Memorial Day. “We are gathered to recall persons who have made the supreme sacrifice...and to honor their families,” Cooper said. “Thus, our deeds speak better than words. While they are physically gone, we remember them. Telling their story continues to honor those who’ve passed.” In reality, they are very close to us, said Commander Cooper. The theme of remembering and relating stories of these heroes continued throughout the morning services. An invocation and prayer was delivered by Chaplin Glenn Turner. Scott Rogers touched the audience with his narration of “In Flanders Field where poppies grow,” and the Honorable Judge Robert F. Cochran sang “In Flanders

Mark Silver, MD, is medical director who will work alongside a team of registered nurses, social workers, clergy and other dedicated volunteers who provide the highest level of dignity for those who are in the last stages of life. Pet Peace of Mind provides canine support. Coastal Hospice is fully equipped and will administer compassionate care to those in need. Sutter Coast Hospital is in the final stages of full accreditation and certification. Director of Hospital Operations Ellie Popadic awaits a visit from the Department of Public Health within the next 60 days to review the Sutter Coast hospice application. Popadic expressed her excitement in offering this much-needed service. The genesis for the discussion on hospice care resulted from the passing of Del Norte County environmental engineer John “Brian” McNally in 2019. At the time of his passing at 76, there was no hospice care offered in Del Norte County. Brian’s last wish before his passing was for this community to introduce hospice care. Cramblet was killed in duty in 1969 while serving in Vietnam.
