Monster trucks invade Crescent City By DANIEL J. SCHMIDT Editor
Attention kids of all ages! Monster trucks have invaded Crescent City! Half truck, half prehistoric dinosaur, the Megasaurus left a trail of giant carbon footprints directly to the Del Norte County Fairgrounds looking for something to destroy. It can chomp on cars and trucks until there is nothing left but scrap metal. Its favorite feast: loud smoky “muscle”cars and trucks that race along Highway 101. Other heavy metal monsters that followed the Megasaurus to the fairgrounds, herded, then corralled inside the Del Norte County Fairgrounds are the Spitfire, the Rock Star, the Identity Theft, and the Weekend Warrior. What all these beasts have in common are 540 cubic-inch supercharged big block engines that produce 1,500 horsepower while consuming clean burning methanol fuel. Most notable are the 66-inch diameter tires that can drive over a stalled car in the lane ahead. The “world’s loudest, fastest, and craziest jet powered Please see MONSTER, Page A2

Trio of Del Norte track and field athletes commit to College of the Redwoods By RAY HAMILL For the Triplicate
Fresh off a very successful spring in track and field, three more Del Norte High student-athletes have announced that they will compete for College of the Redwoods next year, as the list of recent Warriors to commit to the local JC continues to grow. Outgoing seniors Emmanuel Nunez, Alyssa McCovey and Tianna Thompson have all signed a letter of commitment to join the Corsairs track team for the spring of 2023. And CR head coach Reed Elmore expects the speedy McCovey and Thompson to have an immediate impact on a Corsairs squad that is coming off one of its most competitive seasons ever. “Our (4x100 meter) relay team was good this year, but with these two we can go to state,” Elmore said. Investing in students in Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity and Curry counties is one of the cornerstones of Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation — and that commitment continues in June with the awarding of 215 scholarships totaling $469,600. “It is a privilege to continue providing support for the success of thriving youth and families in our communities,” said Sydney Morrone, grants and scholarships manager for HAF and WRCF. “We thank our donors and partners whose generosity supports such deserving individuals and future leaders of our community.” The scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, support graduating high school seniors, current undergraduate, graduate and vocational students seeking support for their post-secondary education. “I was concerned about how to pay for all my tuition, and then I received this unexpected scholarship — I was flabbergasted,” said Del Norte High School senior Juel Kincheloe, who received the Dean Cantwell Memorial Scholarship, and the Bill and Juanita Thompson Scholarship. Juel will pursue environmental studies at Cal Poly Humboldt this fall. “I’m really thankful that (donors) contribute to all these kids and help us get into college.” Trinity County high school senior Andrew Buell plans to use the money from the Wendy Drake Scholarship Fund to purchase the required laptop and cover traveling expenses to attend the technical college WYO Tech in Laramie, Wyoming. Drake established the scholarship to support disadvantaged students who worked hard to graduate from high school. “I struggled through high Please see SCHOLARSHIPS, Page A2
