Changing of the Guard at The Hamlet
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
A half century to do one thing and do it well is quite special.
That’s exactly what Mike and Myrna Finley did at the Hiouchi Hamlet for decades.
July 13, 1975, Mike and Myrna assumed control of the Hamlet.
Folks in Del Norte might remember Del Norte High School Senior Mike Finley pumping gas at the Furtado Shell Station on 2nd Street back in 1964. Now, Mike and Myrna are real seniors, again. Mike began his career at the McKay markets and a decade later, Mike and Myrna took over the Hiouchi Hamlet.
Daughters Neva and Natalie came along.
What are you going to do, Mike? The modest entrepreneur said with a humorous grin, “ I guess I’m going to paint my house.”
The Five Rivers Team, the Sohal family: Curpreet, Simar, Sharan and Jass, which also owns the Ft. Dick Market and other properties in Del Norte plan to continue to operate the Hamlet in the long-standing tradition of excellence and great service.
Be sure to drop by and introduce yourselves to the family.
You’ll see all the old staff and anything you might need, including scrumptious counter item delicacies, will continue to be offered.

A Bridge to Somewhere

BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
A dangerous bridge over remote Jordan creek is most definitely a bridge to two remote homes within east Railroad Trail…and it’s certainly precarious.
With no guard rails and zero steel support, this bridge, one of two, poses a big problem for Del Norte County, deeded owners of both bridges.
Homeowners Rick and Becky Coltra and Jim Harris have been bringing their complaints to the board of supervisors since 2019, to no avail.
Back in 2012, the City was monitoring its public works hardware on east Railroad Trail and a City truck accidently damaged the second bridge.

is capable of dropping 4,000 gallons of fire retardant in less than five seconds. Also assisting in this enhancement of C-130 Hercules aircraft includes the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard in support in maintaining these aircraft, including the replacement of inner and

outer wing boxes and spare parts. Gov. Gavin Newsom was on hand at Cal Fire Aviation Headquarters in praising the acquisition of the C-130Hs air tankers and expansion of aerial firefighting including night-time capable Fire Hawk helicopters, touted California has the largest fleet of firefighting aircraft on the globe.
What appears to resemble an inverted rail car, the City, under the capable hands of then-Public Works Director Eric Wier and City engineer Jim Barnts fixed the damaged bridge at a cost of $80,000. The bridges are not owned or controlled by the City. County Engineer Jon Olson traveled out to take a look/see, after yet another citizen- frustrating visit three weeks ago to the Board.
No return phone calls, no communications on how or what is happening continued to vex property owners Rick and Becky Coltra and Jim Harris. Neither homeowner can accept UPS, propane delivery, Del Norte Ambulance, Fire and Rescue or any vehicles with more than two axles and exces-

The Harbormaster waived the health benefits package in lieu of a housing allowance, within the Harbor district.
The personnel matter was handled in Closed Session at the last meeting.
The District also reported major financial improvements during the first quarters of the current fiscal year which ends June 30, 2025.
The reductions in expenses and its forward momentum, is promising, leading toward great-

County Counsel Says
BOS Must “Economize” Its Meetings
Seems the April 22nd meeting of the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors wasn’t economical enough for Del Norte’s County Counsel, Jacqueline Roberts. The meeting lasting just over an hour, maybe should have been entirely on the “Consent Agenda.” According to Counsel Roberts those pesky Public Commenters can’t seem to shut up. They, those who have the temerity to speak up during Supervisor meetings, should have the good grace, children they are, to be silent.
I, for one, wonder just how far County Counsel Roberts would go to define economizing the Board’s meetings. No “Public Comment” at all? Seems there is already too much to impede public participation and opportunity to be meaningful in the structure of the current format of the board. If only the board would open their ears and listen as well.
To start with, meetings held twice a month on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. Nothing like having a meeting to inconvenience the public, the county’s employers, in order to make sure the county’s unelected are available during a workday without inconveniencing the county employees at all. Just slip on over to the
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Creed: “My goals are simple, I will always be painfully honest, work as hard as I can, learn as much as I can and hopefully make a difference in people’s lives.”
— Deputy David W. March, written one week before his death on his annual evaluation.
I say good morning to your memory from your perfect perch in heaven because I know you’re in a better place. Last year, your Mom, Barbara, joined you. Your Dad, John, and sister Erin miss you. We all miss you.
Many Signal readers want to learn more about you, your life, and the creed you left the LASD upon your exit from our physical world.
One must wonder how the loss of your life and hundreds of thousand others at the hands of an illegal alien must impact your

Board chambers, while getting paid to do the People’s Work. Meetings often held with “county employees” out numbering the public ten to one.
Board members and the unelected county employees allowed to prattle on with no time limit in sight. The public, three minutes period. Board members allowed unlimited time to wax elegant on topics without being subject to public scrutiny or questions. Often in narratives which could use a dose of reality along the way. Too often Board members are allowed to comment on topics which are questionable at best, or utter fantasies of the worse possible kind.
A consent agenda which incorporates 50 to 80 percent of the entire meeting passed inevitably 5-0 with near zero public or Board discussion. Double-digit items on consent agendas allow public participation locked at three minutes for its entirety. So, just how does County Counsel plan to economize the Board’s meetings any further? Everything on the Consent agenda? Limit further public comments? Limit public participation?
The impression the Board’s counsel gives to the public is they are some fresh-
ly chewed piece of gum newly deposited on a sidewalk to be scraped off one’s shoe like some offending rubbish of no importance. Public participation is irrelevant! THE PUBLIC NEED NOT ATTEND! And they don’t, spanning across a near empty gallery.
Counsel Roberts has failed to understand her role. She is engaged by those she is displeased with, ALSO KNOWN AS HER EMPLOYER, THE PUBLIC!
The Chair of the Board of Supervisors has just a few duties prior to each meeting, one of which is the setting of the agenda for the meeting of the board. It is his obligation, Chair Borges, to remove items from the “Consent Agenda” which represent the county’s general business, controversial or not. Non-Controversial items should be limited to the minutes of the previous meeting and Ceremonial items. Everything else, in case you fail to realize this, would be the general business of the board and be subject to scrutiny by the public, three-minute limit for each item, commenter on each item. Only obtuse, Easter Island Statues fail to understand this.
If Chairman of the Board, Joey Borg-
es, cannot manage such a simple task. He should move over for someone who can! The current consent agenda has been abused by the county’s unelected for far too long. Meaningless “Board Reports” and contracts fail in too many ways to inform the public what is being paid for in their name. Past time for change which is in the job description of the Chairman of the Board, Joey Borges, to propose the changes.
The County Counsel is a county employee, not someone who gets to dictate policy. If the meetings have become too long for her, she should step aside. Economical government can do without such sentiment! Meetings after all, rarely last much beyond the noon hour. If the County Counsel and the Board cannot devote a few hours to a public meeting at a very generous cost twice a month to the taxpayer, why are Chris Howard, Valerie Starkey, Dean Wilson, Darrin Short, and Joey Borges in elected office? What say you Chairman Borges? County Counsel Jacqueline Roberts? Is the job too much for you? Perhaps the citizens of the county should economize your employment to zero?

memory, now 23 years after your tragic murder. Your impact is palpable.
Deputy, you’re not just a statistic; your loss changed so many lives, including mine, on how I viewed the millions of illegals who have poured into the United States, many seeking a better life, some committing felonies, all breaking the law entering the United States of America, illegally.
For those reading and not familiar with how Saugus resident and Canyon High graduate Deputy David March, 33, spent his last day alive, here are the details: Dave was on patrol April 29, 2002, as a sole deputy in an LASD vehicle, just a few days short of the approved transfer to the Santa Clarita Valley station, when Deputy March pulled over a vehicle on Live Oak Avenue about 10:40 a.m., just east of Peck Road in Irwindale.
When I was 16 in 1992, a drunken driver hit me. I could not attend prom and many celebrations. Three hospitals and therapy clinic made up half of my teenage life. Today, I can walk OK, but it’s a strain dealing with the injuries I received 30 plus years ago. My hearing is damaged. I cannot drive and speak clearly. I’m aware Del Norte High is having its Prom, May 17. If you plan to attend, enjoy yourself. For 19 plus years. I’ve been bringing

According to the Harbormaster, Commercial operations have performed exceptionally well- with commercial revenue coming in almost 20 percent higher than original projections. Slip rentals have experienced robust growth, rising 50 percent from the first through the
Frugal oversight by commissioners reduced operating expenses 23 percent.
The Harbormaster was quick to caution the Harbor faces serious challenges with long-term debt obligation consuming more than half of annual operating revenue, while aging capital infrastructure
You were wearing your vest and sidearm as you exited the patrol unit. The murderer, whose name I vowed never to utter, lurched from his vehicle and opened fire, and the non-fatal bullet grazed the vest near your shoulder and knocked you down. This twice drug-convicted, fourtimes deported illegal alien then stood over you like the depraved monster he is and shot you in the head twice. En route to the hospital, your life ended. Your seven-and-a-half-year career ended, and your wife Teri and daughter were left behind.
This debris of humanity then fled to Mexico, where he lived in the open and where the United States and Mexico squabbled over the death penalty. District Attorney Steve Cooley gave in and your murderer is incarcerated at Calipatria for 99 years, no parole.

“ The Harbor’s future is bright with expanded commercial activity, growth-tourism related revenue and the securing of additional grant funding,” according to Rademaker.

remain outraged by your death and parade of victims to follow. I founded the Santa Clarita Valley Minute Man chapter, which staged rallies at the Civic Center and City Council meetings. The indifference postured by the City Council was despicable, except for one who was stellar: Bob Kellar. He stood tall and proud for you, Dave. Not only did he mentor you prior to your LASD hire, he came to our rallies. Dave, from your perch, since your murder, I am saddened to say the hundreds of thousands of innocent victims who are not on the Earth today or are severely traumatized by an illegal alien drunk driver, a murderer, rapist/ sexual assault has continued unabated to Jan. 21, 2025. Your angel wings could not have flown you down to a corrupt America. The Joe Biden regime welcomed an estimated 12-15 million illegal
aliens, with thousands of more deaths of innocents, all ages, all ethnicities, all because of insane government policy that would destroy America from the inside, trumping the rights of we citizens. After decades of politicians sitting on their hands, thank God we now have a president who will confront the weak-kneed politicians and return America to its greatness.
The Temple Station will welcome all, 23 years after Dave’s death and who wish to recognize Deputy March for 24 hours, starting at midnight, April 29. The site of the memorial is on Live Oak Boulevard, 200 yards east of Peck Road in Irwindale. Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff David William March, End of Watch, April 29, 2002.

sive weight Engineer Olson of Community Development shared his findings: “The bridge is owned by Del Norte County, given to it by the Miller-Rellum folks, decades back. The budget allocation must come from Administration.” Olson shared the cost of a new pre-fabricated bridge is about $250,000 not including addition of steel supports.
A meeting with all parties to discuss the precarious first bridge (sans steel suuport) is in the works.
The unanswered question as to why the Coltra and Harris families have not been communicated with since 2019 has not been addressed. Now, the County has been noticed and as a matter of public safety, must respond and start communicating and doing something.
