Del Norte Triplicate moving May 1

The Del Norte Triplicate is moving May 1 from its current location to the Curry Coastal Pilot office in Brookings.

“Our employees will still be working in Crescent City and Del Norte County, but those employees will work remotely,” said Country Media’s Chief Executive, Joe Warren.

“Fewer of our customers are coming in to our offices to do business,” Warren said. “As it is, our customers already are placing classified ads and legal notices, obituaries and subscriptions mostly online.”

Country Media Inc., which publishes 10 community newspapers in Oregon and Northern Cal-

ifornia, “is beginning to create a collection of hub locations where we can create and produce multiple newspapers,” Warren said.

“In Tillamook, Oregon, for example, we oversee news reporting and ad sales not only for the Headlight Herald, but also for our adjacent newspapers in Cannon Beach and Manzanita.”

He added that for years the Del Norte Triplicate and the Curry Coastal Pilot have been operated in unison, sharing a classified ad section, production and other resources.

Warren said The Triplicate will continue to arrive on Wednesday each week.

Pebble Beach Drive is Now Open

With some additional work still needed. The City has opened iconic Pebble Beach Drive, from 7th to 8th Streets and to its terminus at the airport.

City Manager Eric Wier extended gratitude and appreciation for the public’s patience, City Public Works and embraced all the partners who facilitated the opening due to catastrophic cliff collapse, January 24. The initiated cliff erosion followed the terrific storms of December 2016. By August 2021, the project had grown to a $32.6 million.

State Senator Mike McGuire was recognized for helping provide an additional $3.75 million to the Pebble Beach Drive Bank

Stabilization fund in both revenue and expenses. The funding allowed a 10 percent contingency reserve in State Assistance. The total funds allocated for the emergency repairs is just under $6 million. City crews and contractors constructed a 220 lineal foot retaining wall to stabilize the bank. All emergency funding is reimbursable.

The City, via consent, voted to continue the emergency status until further notice.

In the interim, Pebble Beach Drive is safe and open to traverse, from beginning at 5th Steet to Washington Blvd., allowing visitors and locals alike to enjoy, arguably some of the most dramatic vistas along coastal North America.

Big Water News in Gasquet

Safe drinking water is coming to the Northfork Loop and Stoney Creek, in Gasquet. It’s a first!

The much- welcomed H2o will now address springs running dry and leaving homeowners with no option but to purchase mobile-delivered water.

City Going Underground

The City has adopted Ordinance 854 amending City aesthetics and placing utilities in a special district, underground on Front and K Streets. The Ordinance is timely as credits from both the City and County will expire June 8, 2025 per the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Rule 20 was established in 1967 by the CPUC allowing local governments to improve the aesthetics of the community. Rule 20A required each electric utility to allocate “work credits” to local governments for the purposes of future underground projects. These “work credits” may be accessed through a defined process that can include the placement of all utilities underground and out of sight. After passing today’s Ordinance allowing the City to access

$2.4 million from the County, in preparation of Front Street becoming the new Cultural Gateway and Front St. Beautification project Staff has been utilizing these funds for the project. Approximately $394,000 remains unspent from the $2.8 million in

City coffers. The City has requested and will receive all work credits for the soon to expire Del Norte County Rule 20 “work credits” after supervisors unanimously approved the transfer at the Tues-

Since the founding of the water district in 1968, the Loop has never had access to fresh, safe drinking water. Crews have begun digging a 3000 ft trench surrounding the Loop. Some 30 parcels are soon to be impacted. Water from the Smith is now being sanitized for the property owners.

A $2 million grant from the California Department of Water Resources is funding the grant. The buy-in is $4600 per parcel. Water users can expect their faucets to release the clean water by early June.

Assemblyman Chris Rogers:

An Adherent to the Kamala Harris Word Salad Academy

It is not often State or Federal representatives deign to appear north of the Sonoma County line, unless it calls for a trip to Humboldt County, the second most populous county in District two. Let’s face it, Del Norte, Mendicino and Trinity counties, the remaining three in the district, simply cannot compete with Sonoma County (population near 200,000) and Humboldt County (population also near 200,000) in terms of political relevance. This was made crystal clear during recent events when Assemblyman Chris Rogers, our recently elected state representative, spent a couple of hours with local residents at the Paragon Coffee Shop Wednesday April 16th.

Guest

So, who is Assemblyman Chris Rogers? His bio has him as a lifetime resident of Santa Rosa, California, population 175,000. Thirty-seven years old, married, a Democrat, and had he run for office in Del Norte County alone, he would not be the County’s State assembly member. His political positions have him aligned with the State’s progressive/liberal faction which has dominated California politics for several decades.

It was clear once one sifted through Rogers’ numerous word salads, his positions on issues which are important to Del Norters, there wasn’t much common ground. From support for single payer health care to opposition

of the deportation of criminal illegal aliens, Rogers consistently found himself out of step with most at the Paragon Coffee shop. While approval of men in women’s sports, a mileage tax on California drivers, and opposition and obstruction to cutting of waste and fraud at the national level may win approval in Humboldt and Santa Rosa, it is not a policy stance from an elected representative which is a clear winner in Del Norte County.

Rogers continues with environmental suicide on issues of climate change, offshore wind power, unreliable solar, opposition to responsible extraction of natural resources (timber and minerals), and elimination of water storage

from local rivers in the name of restoration. Rogers supports the ineffective “house first” model for addressing homelessness and has no answer for the cost and expense of affordable housing, let alone for low or poverty level housing. His “solutions” seem to inevitably seek more legislation, or massive government subsidies in a State mired in budget busting social programs. Unfortunately, Rogers positions on a wide range of issues are not those of importance to most who live in Del Norte County. HIS positions on political issues may find favor in San Francisco or Sacramento even Santa Rosa, or Humboldt but are not those of actual rural populations in the State. The Novem-

ber elections of 2024 and the subsequent activity of the current Administration have found favor amongst much of the rural populations in the United States and in California. Del Norte County is no different.

If Assemblyman Rogers cannot address his clear biases when representing Del Norte County, it will be a long and painful two years with little to show for his time in office. Legislation on speed limits and cock fighting will hardly alleviate issues directly affecting county residents negatively. Homelessness, crime, high taxation, state induced inflation, ruinous regulation, growing dependance on social services, spiking poverty levels, and exceptionally poor results

from local public education are just a few problems which need effective remedies. Word salads instead of solutions, focus on inane, progressive, crazy and a government intent on destroying the State of California are things recognizable to a growing portion of the entire country, yet a few places clearly have not gotten the message. Assemblyman “word salad” Chris Rogers is one who hasn’t recognized the change in the United States and continues to associate with what hasn’t worked in California since the Democrats took control. Word salads are no longer acceptable, Mr. Rogers, nor is the current direction you wish to take Del Norte County and District Two.

Commissioner Anticipates Bright Future for the Harbor

At the 2025 Del Norte Economic Summit, the Crescent City Harbor District delivered a presentation that highlighted the District’s resilience, forward-thinking initiatives, and upcoming opportunities. Keeping with the summit’s ongoing theme of opportunity and optimism, the Harbor District’s presentation outlined a vision for economic prosperity, infrastructure improvement, and future development. Through a trio of speakers—Mike Rademaker, Mike Bahr, and Chris Williams—the District outlined a comprehensive plan to position the Harbor as a cornerstone of Del Norte County’s economic future, fostering community pride and countering unwarranted pessimism. Mike Rademaker Harbormaster/CEO, CCHD presenting for the Harbor District, opened the presentation with an inspiring message focused on economic opportunity. He highlighted recent achievements for the Harbor, including the successful reopening of the ice plant by

OceanGold, which is a much needed resource for our local fishing fleet. The harbormaster also announced a forthcoming free concert on June 28th at Whaler Island, envisioned as a natural amphitheater akin to Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks, with its natural stone face and ocean and lighthouse in the background. He also conveyed the re-establishment of the partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, which has improved safety in and around the Harbor District. While not mentioned during the presentation, the District’s collaboration with the Elks Lodge to restore the long-dormant Redwood RV Park represents another significant milestone. Rademaker’s remarks, followed by his assertion that “good things are happening at the Harbor,” set an optimistic tone, rallying attendees around a shared vision of progress and economic prosperity.

Following the harbormaster, Mike Bahr of Community Solutions provided a detailed

overview of the financial strategies underpinning the harbor’s revitalization. Bahr outlined the District’s success in securing critical grants, which are pivotal to funding infrastructure improvements essential for the harbor’s long-term viability. He also discussed ongoing grant applications and future funding opportunities, demonstrating a proactive approach to seeking out the funding that will enable the Harbor to address critical infrastructure projects. Bahr was candid about funding shortfalls, offering a transparent explanation of the challenges. His presentation clarified the complex funding landscape for large-scale projects, ensuring attendees understood both the opportunities and obstacles ahead. Bahr also put out a call to our local leaders to reach out to their contacts at the Redwood Region Rise organization by phone and email as a show of support of the ongoing, highly competitive, grant application efforts of the harbor.

Chris Williams of TCA Archi-

tects concluded the presentation with a forward-looking vision for the harbor’s development, supported by a visual representation developed from weeks of community input and surveys, that brought the District’s plans to life. Williams emphasized a phased approach to growth, designed to avoid the pitfalls of uncoordinated development. This structured strategy prioritizes “shovel-ready” projects, enabling swift implementation in areas ready for immediate development, while laying the groundwork for long-term development in other less-ready areas. Central to Williams’ presentation was a commitment to preserving the Harbor’s vital fishing industry, ensuring that economic expansion does not compromise the cultural and economic heritage of the harbor district. I encourage all community members to visit the harbors website, www. ccharbor.com, and participate in the survey. Your input is appreciated and welcomed to guide the ongoing vision.

Having the presentation address these three key areas provided a full picture of where the harbor will be going in the next few years. We are not out of the woods yet, but with Harbormaster Rademaker’s efforts to reduce staffing, overhead, streamlining operations, and overall pinching pennies, nickels and dimes wherever possible, the harbor is poised for available dollars to break free of its financial woes stronger and better able to meet these challenges head on. As a community, we have the drive and interest, the financial groundwork is being laid, and the vision is being developed. We have incredible support from our partners in the City, County and community at large and public participation is at an all time high. The vision of what we can be is presenting itself, and the financial situation is slowly improving. The harbor is poised to succeed in big ways for Del Norte County and like Mike has said “Good things are happening in the Harbor.”

True North Updates Status on Micro Village

The True North Organizing Network of Eureka hosted a Town Hall on Housing, last Tuesday at the Veterans Hall, in Crescent City. About 60 folks showed up to learn updates on housing the homeless in Del Norte. At the panel table included members the Board of Supervisors, Department of Health and Human Services staff and the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office.

The first Agenda item called for an update on the County-owned Legacy, now established as Permanent Supportive Housing(PSH). The Legacy, formally the Coastal Inn and Suites located through the spine of Crescent City, between the 101s. The property was transferred from private to County ownership through a $2.4 million State grant called Project Home Key, three years back. The Legacy was originally established as emergency / temporary housing ONLY but for rea-

sons unknown has been assigned as permanent housing, with costs for remodeling derived from other non-private sources.

The Encampment Resolution Funding(ERF) is the support for the $10.8 million MicroVillage 60 bed long term housing offered on Williams Drive. The MicroVillage is scheduled for completion in June, 2026.

The audience was attentive and supportive with questions and declarations of support for Del Norte Mission Possible, develop-

ers / management of the project.

One questioner brought to the panel of agencies attending, the Housing First model has shown poor progress in integrating transitional success with compromised housing needs over a decade. A Los Angeles study, over the ten year period, showed a 95 percent client return to the streets for those who completed the program. The speaker asked Mission Possible staff how it will track those individuals who’ve completed the program.

Response from Mission Possible said it would track clients for one year (12 months).

The State has spent $24 billion on addressing systemic homelessness, with much of the funding unaccounted for. Systemic homelessness in the United States with California hosting most of those in need, has increased from 37 percent to 50 percent nation-wide in some Homeless categories this last year, according to the Homeless Policy Research Institute.

Commentary - Opinion by John Evans, Crescent City Harbor Commissioner

Assembly Member Meets His Supporters at Paragon Coffeehouse

Assemblymember Chris Rogers(D-CA2) paid a visit to Crescent City, Wednesday.

ASM Rogers greeted supporters at the Paragon Coffeehouse, from 11-1pm, with a changing and revolving audience of about 20 folks who asked questions and made Rogers aware of their concerns. Rogers prevailed over local School Board Trustee Michael Greer over the five county district, last, November.

Democrat Rogers, who represents Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte Counties, was asked questions concerning Social Security, Medicaid, Education, threatened cut backs in State services, speed limit restrictions along 199, dearth of medical services and housing needs, responded extemporaneously. One questioner queried Rogers, “ You did not win Del Norte or Trinity counties (Red county Del Norte voted 60 percent to your 40 percent ). No Assemblymember, State Senator or Congress Representative Democrat has won Del Norte County in over 30 years. How will

you serve the needs of middle class Del Norters in your first term in office? Your response was no response,” and the Assemblymember moved on to another question.

The Triplicate welcomed Rogers to Del Norte and asked him if he owned a home. Rogers responded his wife owned a home whereupon

The Triplicate reporter shared the experience of difficulty in securing homeowners insurance and the only option for securing coverage was the California Fair Plan. After acknowledging the Fair Plan has experienced a 300 percent increase this past year, Rogers deferred to Insurance Commissioner (Ricardo Lara), for answers during the next session in the Assembly. The Assemblymember agreed the current insurance condition is “painful” and moved to another question.

ASM Rogers has voted in favor of transgender males (boys) being allowed to compete with females (girls) in all athletic programs in the State.

Rogers also supported voter identification be prohibited, allowing possible non-citizens to vote in the Golden State.
