Del Norte High to return as county enters red tier Fewer COVID cases countywide allow indoor dining to resume ZACK DEMARS The Triplicate
Del Norte County has advanced to the red tier of COVID-19 restrictions, the state announced Tuesday. The change in tier comes with a loosening of some restrictions as a result of declines in the county’s case rate. Del Norte County is one of just five across the state not
under purple-level restrictions, the highest level of the state’s framework. “It’s good news. It’s very good news,” Dr. Warren Rehwaldt, the county’s public health officer, told the board of supervisors during its meeting Tuesday. Among other changes, the key difference in the restrictions comes for restaurants, which will be
allowed to reopen to 25% of their indoor capacity. “Well the list of impacted businesses is pretty long,” Rehwaldt said. “I think the ones that come to mind the most are our restaurants, though, because they were forced to go to outside operations only, which we all know is not really feasible in Del Norte County in January and February.”
Under state rules, the new restrictions mean: • Gyms and fitness centers will be allowed to reopen indoors to 10% capacity. • Movie theaters will be allowed to reopen indoors to 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less. • Museums, zoos and aquariums will be allowed to reopen indoors to 25% capacity.
• Restaurants will be allowed to reopen to indoor dining up to 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less. • Retail stores can increase to 50% capacity, and grocery stores have no virus-related capacity restrictions. A complete list of the county’s restrictions is available on the

K9 deputy honors Crescent City hero Huffman, experts address vaccine questions
Sheriff’s office names K9 after Capt. Bruno G. de Solleni By David Rupkalvis The Triplicate
The Del Norte County Sheriff”s Office has chosen a name for its newest K9 officer and will honor a local hero at the same time. When the sheriff’s department received the K9, it went to Facebook and asked for suggestions on a new name. In a release issued Friday, the sheriff’s office said hundreds of suggestions were received. The one chosen – Bruno. The name honors Capt. Bruno G. de Solleni, who was killed in September 2008 while serving as part of the Oregon National Guard in Afghanistan. On Sept. 20, 2008, de Solenni was on duty in Kandahar, Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, sustaining injuries that took his life. He was a lifelong resident on Crescent City and graduate from high school in 1994. In addition to serving in the National Guard, he worked as commercial crabber and logger. He was in Afghanistan for nine months, and previously served tours in Egypt and Iraq. In a previously released news story, Oregon National Guard Capt. Dominic Oto described Bruno de Solenni as smart, kind and with a steel core that made him the best officer on the team. “He loved the Afghans, and in combat never was there a better operator or leader,” Oto said. “The man was absolutely fearless.” Sheriff Erik Apperson said he talked to the de Solleni family before choosing the name.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office recently acquired a new K9 deputy. After asking the community for suggestions for a name, the K9 was named Bruno in honor of Capt. Bruno G. de Solleni, who was killed while fighting in Afghanistan. “This name just feels right,” Apperson said. “K9 Bruno will serve Del Norte County public safety
with focus and commitment. He will make our region a safer place and in no small way carry on the
legacy that came from his namesake. I am proud to be a part of this moment.”
Congressman Jared Huffman held a town hall Feb. 3 to share information about the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the northern portion of his congressional district, from Del Norte County to Mendocino County. Among many topics up for discussion during the pandemic, Huffman and a panel of experts focused on the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. “It is the most hopeful part of this crisis,” Huffman said in his opening comments. “The fact that we, in less than a year, have multiple safe, effective vaccines that can save lives and accelerate our path out of this. But it’s also a frustrating issue right now, because the rollout’s been slower than any of us want, and it can be confusing, because there’s a lot of changing and seemingly contradictory information out there.” Huffman said he’s seen changes in the country’s response to the pandemic in the time since President Joe Biden was inaugurated. “Even though it’s only been a few days, I already see major changes in our national response to this pandemic,” Huffman said. “There’s a new focus on science, on consistent messaging, on transparPlease see QUESTIONS, Page A8
Humboldt County woman still recovering after dog attack ZACK DEMARS The Triplicate
Family members are asking for support as a Humboldt County woman remains in the hospital after a dog attack caused serious injuries two weeks ago. Candis Danielson, a Brookings-Harbor High School grad who moved to Humboldt County after graduation, had gone over to a neighbor’s house to help him with a generator he was borrowing, according to Shiann Davis, Danielson’s sister. “I don’t blame her for going and helping her neighbor,” Davis said. “She just has such a big heart.” The accident came when two dogs got out of the house in Myers Flat and attacked Danielson, mauling her legs and knocking her over, according to Davis. “The dogs ended up dragging her by her legs underneath his trailer,” Davis said. There, the dogs severely injured both of Danielson’s legs. Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene to find Danielson with “serious and extensive injuries related to the attack” and had to perform life-saving efforts, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. One other victim was treated for bite-related injuries nearby after attempting to assist Danielson, and the dogs have been taken into Please see RECOVERING, Page A6
