Crescent City seeking more funding for Beachfront Park By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Triplicate

Weeks after receiving a $5 million grant to help renovate Beachfront Park, the city council from Crescent City voted unanimously to apply for another grant to move forward the full rebuild of the park. The council voted to apply for the Rural Recreation and Tourism grant as part of Prop. 68. The city received the first grant through the State Parks Program grant program, also support by Prop. 68. City Manager Eric Weir said work the city did previously led

to the successful application the first time around, saying have a master plan for Beachfront Park likely made the difference in receiving funding. “The statewide grant was very competitive,” Weir said. “We were one of the few places to get a grant. We’re going to fund the bike park, we’re going to fund the expansion of Kids Town, it’s going to fund the Tolowa Cultural Experience, it’s going to fund the past culture piece and the one-mile loop.” While the grant will make a big difference, it is just the Please see BEACHFRONT, Page A2

Team defense has Warriors in contention for a Big 5 championship By Ray Hamill For The Triplicate

With three league games remaining, the Del Norte Warriors are right in the thick of an exciting race for this year’s Big 5 championship in boys basketball. After escaping Eureka with a hard-fought 44-40 win last week, in a game that head coach Cris Rice described as a wake-up call, the Warriors are now 4-1 in the Big 5 with everything to play for over the next two weeks. Arcata and McKinleyville are both also in contention for the league crown headed into the

stretch run, and Del Norte will play both of them in the final week of league play. But a conference title is just one of several goals for this talented roster, which is now 13-4 on the season. “Our goal is to win the Big 5,” Rice said. “And obviously after that we’d like to win the Dick Niclai tournament, and we’d like to win some NCS games. And if we’re fortunate enough, we’d love to play in the state tournament.” Rice admits his team will have to pick up its offensive

The immediate future of Del Norte High wrestling appears to be in good hands.

In what has been another unusual and unpredictable season on the local high school mats, a young Warriors roster is maturing quickly and once again appears to be the team to beat in

this year’s H-DNL. On Saturday, the Del Norte boys beat out 13 other teams to place first at the North Coast Classic at Eureka High with yet another strong tournament showing.

COVID continues to rage in Del Norte County, with 127 new cases reported Monday. The 127 cases brought the active cases in the county to 326, with five people in the hospital. No new deaths were reported in the last week, with the death count of those who died after contracting COVID at 41. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic almost two years ago, 4,692 cases have been reported in Del Norte County. The majority, 52% were among men and more than half the cases were in those ages 18-49. There were new cases reported at Pelican Bay State Prison this week, with seven cases coming from the prison. Those cases are not including in the community count. Del Norte County Public Health also announced changes to the quarantine requirement to keep in line with the CDC and state recommendations. According to the public health department, anyone who tests positive for COVID, regardless of vaccination status, is asked to stay at home for at least five days from the start of symptoms or from the test date is having no symptoms. Isolation can end after day five if you no longer have symptoms and a COVID test returns a negative result. If you are unable to or choose not to get a follow up test, public health is still recommending a 10-day quarantine. Even if you receive a negative test after the fifth day, those who tested positive are asked to wear a well-fitting mask around others for a full 10 days in all settings. If you have been a close contact with someone with COVID and are either unvaccinated or eligible for a booster and have not received a booster, public health recommends you quarantine for at least five days, regardless of symptoms. After five days, quarantine can end if you have no symptoms and a COVID test shows a negative result. Those who are fully vaccinated with a booster or not yet eligible for a booster do not need to quarantine after close contact unless symptoms appear. The new guidance does not apply to those living or working in congregate setting or any healthcare providers. In those cases, the 10-day quarantine is still recommended.
