Yurok biologist has whirlwind couple of weeks BY RODNEY HARWOOD Country Media
CRESCENT CITY – It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Yurok tribal citizen and Senior Fisheries Biologist for the Yurok Tribe of California Keith Parker. He sat in his living room talking with a New York Times reporter answering questions and addressing issues pertinent to Northern California and fish management on the Klamath River. He spent time out on the river with the Times photographer as the team put together a presentation that will run not only in the New York City daily, but another piece entitled “The scientists watching their life’s work disappear,” will run in the New York Times Sunday Magazine with a circulation of 6 million readers. Then on Oct. 19-21, at the 2023 American Indian Science Engineering Society National Conference (AISES) in Spokane, Wash., he and the largest audience in conference history (3,500) watched a five-minute video of his work. AISES is a national nonprofit organization focused on increasing representation of Indigenous peoples of North America and

Del Norte boys’ soccer ends long drought Biologist: BY RAY HAMILL
Impact of climate change is growing
For The Triplicate
Thanks to some outstanding defense this fall, the Del Norte boys soccer team ended a 28year championship drought. The Warriors were crowned H-DNL champions on Wednesday (Oct. 25) after a 2-0 over McKinleyville in Crescent City, securing just the second-ever league title for the program and a first since 1995. And they achieved it with some stellar defense, posting shutouts in eight of their final nine games, including five straight to close out league play. Senior goalkeeper Isidro Montanez and his defense have not allowed a goal in more than 440 minutes of play, last conceding in a 1-1 tie against Fortuna on Oct. 7. “I am very proud of my boys

Yurok Tribe of California Senior Fisheries Biologist Keith Parker paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts on what’s going on, not only in his world, but the world around him, as he focused his thoughts on the topic of climate change and the climate crisis. As a scientist, the Yurok tribal member is a member of the Klamath River Technical and Trinity River Hatchery Technical Teams. He has conducted numerous fisheries biology, hydrology, and river ecology research projects in Alaska, Washington, Idaho and California and was recently named the 2023 Professional of the Year for technical excellence by the American Indian Science Engineering Society National Conference (AISES). As a Northern California tribal member, Parker has family in the Karuk, Hupa and Tolowa communities and remembers the teachings of the elders about the connection to the earth and its inhabitants. His is a message one of past ties to present lives and the dangers surrounding destructive habits people have taken for granted. “I talk to people here and they don’t even realize all

Warriors win thriller to stretch Big 4 run BY RAY HAMILL
For The Triplicate
The Del Norte Warriors secured at least a share of a fourth straight league championship in football in dramatic circumstances on Friday night (Oct. 27). They had to dig deep, scoring a pair of unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter on the way to an 18-17 come-from-behind victory over St. Bernard’s at Mike Whalen Field. But with their backs to the wall and the championship on the line, the players responded with a gutsy finish. And it was the seniors on senior night that led the way. “We stayed with what we do, and we grounded it out,” Del Norte head coach Darren LaFazio said. “Our seniors stepped up. They really wanted this win. “We needed to win this game and they knew it, and they played as hard as they could.”

The victory was the Warriors’ 15th straight in conference play dating back to the 2018 season, and it was their seventh straight over the Crusaders. The Warriors went undefeated in conference on the way to championships in 2019, 2021 and 2022. There was no league held in the COVID-shortened season in the spring of 2021. With Friday’s win, Del Norte improved to 2-0 in the Big 4 with one game remaining and 6-2 overall. Also on Friday night, Fortuna beat Eureka 38-14, leaving both the Huskies and Crusaders 1-1 in conference. With one round of league games remaining, Del Norte can win the league pennant outright with a win at Fortuna on Friday night. The showdown against St.
