Voters overwhelmingly keep city, county sales taxes Supervisor races remain too close to call

Unofficial election night returns for the 2022 Del County General election have been tabulated by Elections Clerk Alissia Northrup.

Voters in both the City and County overwhelmingly rejected sales tax Measure T, which would have repealed the 13.5 percent City tax increase back to 7.25 percent.

More than 76 percent of voters cast ballots against the measure while only 23 percent voted in

favor.

The vote was also emphatic for Measure U County tax and 67.7 percent of voters cast ballots against the measure while 32.3 percent voted for it.

As a result, the sales taxes approved in 2020 will remain in place in both Crescent City and Del Norte County.

6,312 votes were counted Tuesday evening with an estimated 41.2 percent voter turnout.

The county supervisor races were very competitive, leaving the final

outcome undecided as final votes are tallied.

In District Four, Joey Borges holds an 88-vote lead over Patty Adams for the seat soon to be vacated by Gerry Hemmingsen. Borges has received 797 votes, or 53 percent, to 709, or 47 percent, for Adams.

In District Five, three-term Sheriff Dean Wilson holds a 58-vote margin over appointed incumbent Susan Masten. Wilson has received

Governor Gavin Newsom again lost another Del Norte County election, while cruising to re-election for his second term. Brian Dahle beat Newsom by the same margin he lost the statewide race: 60 percent to 40 percent.

Newsom’s judicial appointments for the supreme and appeals court were confirmed by voters across the Golden State, but Del Norte voters rejected the nominees including Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Associate Justices Goodwin Liu, Martin Jenkins and Joshua Groban. Hmong memorial repaired just in time for Veterans Day

When Veterans Day parade goers arrive at the Point of Honor Friday at 11 a.m. to remember the veterans who served, they’ll be greeted by a heartening surprise.

Crescent City Facilities Manager Jason Wylie painstakingly repaired the monument to Hmong soldiers who assisted the U.S. in Vietnam that was vandalized last month in time for the celebration.

“It’s absolutely amazing, that’s the kind of people we have on our team,” said Crescent City Councilor Blake Inscore. He referenced the fact that he hoped the monument which was tipped over, cracked and chipped, would be patched in time

for the veteran’s celebration but didn’t know if it was really possible.

“The mayor looked at me when I said that and we both wondered how it could happen in time,” Inscore said while praising the work as so good those who viewed it including Hmong elders in the community were speechless. “It was the kind of thing where no one spoke.”

The annual Veteran’s Day festivities in Crescent City begin at 10 at the corner of 9th and H Streets and ends at the Point of Honor. The recognition of veterans will take place from 11 to 11:15 a.m. The luncheon will take place at the VFW Memorial Hall, at 810 H Street from 11:30 to 2 p.m.

In addition, the Crescent City Council discussed updating the

city’s housing element which essentially looks at ways for the city to examine its housing capacity and progress.

Discussion turned to accessory dwelling units, ADU’s, and ways to encourage home owners with property to consider building more of these units to provide tenant housing and fulfill the city’s strategy of filling in the gaps in housing.

Councilor Inscore asked the consultant from SHN, Bob Brown, if the city had yet approved pre-engineering plans for the ADU’s so those interested could simply purchase a plan and avoid the cost of hiring an engineer.

“We need to focus on something

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office has added a new member to its team.

K9 Valor recently made it to Crescent City, where he was assigned to DNSO Deputy Kenny Fahndrich.

Over the past six weeks, Valor and Deputy Fahndrich have gone through extensive training for both patrol and narcotic detection. They have passed all their state certifications and are now on patrol in the Del Norte County area.

This is a huge accomplishment for our department and the citizens of Del Norte County.

Sheriff Garrett Scott would like to thank the Sheriff’s Posse for coordinating all of the fundraising that took place and the tremendous support from the community and donations that have been received to make the K9 program a success.

Warriors secure third straight Big 4 league title

The Del Norte Warriors are headed back to the North Coast Section playoffs, but they were left disappointed they did not get a home game in the opening round.

After wrapping up a third consecutive Big 4 league championship and a dominating regular season with a 41-0 win over Fortuna on Friday night, Del Norte was expected to receive a top-four seed in the Division-4 bracket and a guaranteed home game as league champions.

However, the NCS seeding committee did not agree and seeded the Warriors No. 5 to set up a trip to play No. 4 Tennyson High School in Hayward on Friday night.

“I thought realistically we’d get the four seed,” head coach Nick White said. “It was disappointing not to get a home game.”

The Warriors will have to put their disappointment behind them quickly as they prepare for a dangerous Lancers team that finished 8-2 this season, including a 5-0 mark in the West Alameda County-Foothill League.

In particular, they will have to account for senior receiver Taeshaun Lyons, who is a heavily-recruited Division-I prospect.

“He’s very fast,” White said of the talented wideout, who averages more than 100 yards receiving a

game and has scored 15 touchdowns. “He might be the fastest kid we’ve ever seen, so he’s going to present a lot of challenges for us.”

The Warriors will present some challenges for the home team as well.

They continued to dominate on both sides of the ball against Fortuna on senior night, in what was the team’s first home game since the end of September.

“Our kids were very excited to play this game,” White said. “We had a good week of preparation, it was senior night, and it was our first home game in a while.”

Giancarlo Desolenni and RJ Loftin each scored a pair of touchdowns in the win, with Dessolenni finding the end zone on runs of 31 and two yards, the latter of which was set up by an 85-yard run by Loftin.

Loftin added TD runs of one and 19 yards.

“Between our line and our running backs, I thought we played outstanding on offense,” White said. “The holes were really big, and defensively we played lights out.”

The Warriors added a defensive TD when Kai Russell recovered a Fortuna fumble and took it 45 yards to the end zone, while ever-improving sophomore Aden Mintonye continued his impressive season with a 55-yard TD run.

The win stretched Del Norte’s winning streak in league play to

13 straight, dating back to the fall of 2018, and during that time they have now won three consecutive pennants.

(There was no league held during the COVID-shortened season in the spring of 2021.)

“It’s huge to win league three

years in a row, especially with the teams and coaches in the H-DN,” White said. “It says a lot about the program, the coaches, the kids and everybody who’s a part of the program, and how much work everybody puts in.”

As for Friday’s showdown, the

Warriors will stick largely to the game plan that got them this far.

“You keep going with the formula you’re successful with,” the head coach said. “We’re going to run the ball and take our chances in the passing game when they come.”

Friday night’s game is set for 7 p.m.

Marcella (Marcy) Marie Dennison, 60, of Wakeman, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on October 22, 2022. Marcella was born on June 25, 1962, to Theodore (Ted) and Madeleine (Madge) Dennison (nee Greyeyes) in Reno, Nevada, joining her sister, Cheryl Renee. In 1965 the family relocated to Crescent City, California, where Ted and Madge divorced. Later, Ted married Joyce Beal, bringing into the now-blended family her children, Rick, Margo, and Paula.

In junior high and high school, Marcy’s athletic talent was clear as she excelled at competitive swimming, and then running. Running became her catharsis, and she was a champion in the Humboldt-Del Norte high school league, qualifying for State in both cross country and track. She set many long-standing records and was inducted into the Del Norte High School Athletes’ Hall of Fame last year. After Marcy graduated from Del Norte High School in 1980, she went on to study at Long Beach State University.

After college, Marcella moved to Washington state, and married Frank Daniel Gopher on February 25, 1989. Marcella and Frank were soon blessed with a daughter, Raevyn Marie Gopher, and then a son, Joseph Daniel Greyeyes Gopher. Marcella immersed herself in Frank’s (Yakima) and her (Cree) native heritage, even embarking on her own business creating “Traditional American Indian Sewing & Crafts,” including Cradleboards, jewelry, moccasins, and buckskin dresses.

As her children grew, she became involved with, then worked for, the Toppenish School District. After she and Frank parted ways, Marcella began her successful career in accounting with Battelle Corporation as an auditor.

we can target in a more immediate manner.”

City Manager Eric Weir emphatically agreed, “We need to do everything we can as a city. We are in a housing crisis.”

Providing pre-engineered designs for ADU’s could save between $15,000 and $20.000 per home. The hope as expressed by the council is that less expensive small homes might assist renters who have been priced out of the market. Crescent City’s waiting list even for those who have housing vouchers from Housing and Urban Development is long and for many can mean months or years without housing.

Albert John Graves, 92, passed away on November 3, 2022 in Crescent City, California. He was born October 8, 1930 in Oregon City, Oregon. He was a 63 year resident of Del Norte County.

Private services will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.

In 2019, Marcella moved to Wakeman, Ohio, to care for her father. Her heart, though, longed for the place she always considered to be her home. The ocean, the beach, and the Redwoods re-mained forever in her heart, and called her back often to the place where she felt most at peace.

Marcella is survived by the two loves of her life—her daughter, Raevyn Marie Gopher, and her son, Joseph Daniel Greyeyes Gopher. Also remaining are her father, Theodore (Ted) Dennison, half-sister Carol Greyeyes, stepsisters Paula Beal and Margo (Beal) Flora, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Marcella was preceded in death by her sister, Cheryl Renee (Den-nison) Chapman, and her mother, Madeleine Marie (Greyeyes) Dennison.

A future memorial service will be held in Del Norte County, California, where her ashes will be lov-ingly returned to the Earth from which she came. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that

the draft plans were in the works and Weir requested they be brought back to council for approval.

In the meantime, the entire housing element will require at least one public hearing and months of planning before being finalized by the deadline in August of next year.

Finally, council also took up the issue of a shared welcome center with the National Parks and the Redwood Park Conservancy as well as the Chamber of Commerce.

The idea is to shift from having two welcome centers across from each other, one donated to parks and the other to Crescent City, that they be combined to create one experience and to encourage people not to simply travel through Crescent City, but to stop there too.

donations be made to https:// everloved.com/memorial/marcella-dennison-gopher/family/ or sent to Laureen Kinnaman, 705-550 Travis Ln., Susanville, CA 96130, to help with final expenses.

Wood responds to PG&E capacity issues

Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg), along with other local, state and federal elected officials have been meeting with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to get answers about transmission capacity issues in southern Humboldt County and on November 1, PG&E made a presentation to the Humboldt Board of Supervisors to respond to that issue.

“I did not hear the answers I was looking for,” said Wood. “We need business growth, more residential housing, including senior and student housing, and have to be ready for the massive offshore wind project, but it definitely appears that PG&E is not aligned with our local

needs and plans.”

Members of the Board of Supervisors had questions for PG&E, as did members of the public, and the company reiterated its commitment to close the gap on delays in providing service, saying that they will reduce the wait times by two to four years.

“Although one could call that reduction in wait times admirable, many of these companies have already been issued ‘Will Serve’ letters that applicants thought meant that once their projects were complete, the switch would be turned on immediately,” Wood said. “Unfortunately, those letters may not even be worth the pieces of paper they’re written on.”

Appointed Commissioner Gerhard Weber holds a narrow lead over candidate Kevin Hendrick for the second opening.

Shepherd received 2,904 votes, Weber collected 1,856 and Hendrick has 1,828. Annie Nehmer was fourth with 1,683 and Linda Sutter fifth with 896.

In Del Norte Unified School District, Abbie Crist

Businesses currently complete an application with PG&E, pay fees and move forward on their projects while waiting for PG&E to issue a “Will Serve” letter. Before the issue arose this year, the issue of capacity was not a concern raised by PG&E or one applicants worried about.

“I want to know how we got to this point,” said Wood. “Why, for years, was everything business as usual and then all of a sudden we learn that PG&E cannot meet the capacity demands? Southern Humboldt County needs to grow and has solid plans to grow, but it seems that PG&E has the ability to pull the plug on those plans.”

leads the District 2 race while Michael Greer seems to have captured the District 5 race.

Crist collected 487 votes to 419 for William Meriweather in District 2, while Greer received 697 votes to 476 for Phillip Williams in District 5.

The remaining ballots will be tabulated after Veterans Day, Monday, November 14. Results remain unofficial for 30 days.

The fading miracle of migration

For the past few weeks, dozens of turkey vultures have been circling on thermals over my house in Oregon, preparing to soar away south into California. Not long ago, I saw a late monarch butterfly passing high over head, its orange wings incandescent against the blue sky.

These are examples of the great migratory movements that enliven the West every spring and fall.

The long-distance migrations of seemingly fragile monarch butterflies are among nature’s most incredible phenomena, with eastern populations wintering in vast numbers in a tiny refuge in Mexico, and western popu lations at a few sheltered spots along the California coast.

Migration is central to the lives of many wild animals of great public interest and huge economic importance, from salmon to waterfowl to large mammals like pronghorn and elk. Just about everybody attuned to the natural world looks forward to some migratory milestone, wheth er it’s the arrival of the first robin of spring or the beginning of duck hunting season.

Thanks to advances in technology and data collection, this is a gold en age for research on migration. Radar allows documentation of the magnitude of animals on the move: On a recent night, for example, it was estimated that 5.4 million birds were in the skies over Oregon.

The citizen science database eBird, combined with advances en abling the detection of signals from lightweight tags attached to migrat ing animals, have provided migration maps of stunning specificity. For an example with turkey vultures, go to https://tinyurl.com/mtndawtm.

At the same time, we are also coming to understand the many threats to migration. The drastic declines of Pacific salmon are known all too well. Elk and pronghorn face ever-increasing obstacles posed by high ways, roads to access and extract fossil fuels and other developments on the landscape.

But what’s happening to migratory birds really tells the story. Based on many lines of evidence, scientists have concluded that 2.9 billion — yes, billion — breeding adult birds have been lost in the United States since the 1970s. That is one-third of the total bird population of the United States.

Of that 2.9 billion, 86%, 2.5 billion, are migratory species. Although declines of birds in the western part of the country are less severe overall than in the East, many of our familiar migrants are showing dramatic reductions, including rufous hummingbird, down 60%, com mon nighthawk, 58%, band-tailed pigeon, 57%, Lewis’s woodpecker, 67%, and evening grosbeak, 92%.

Why is this happening? The loss of habitat is the main problem for many species, especially grassland birds. For example, between 2018–19 alone, 2.6 million acres of grassland in the Great Plains were converted to row-crop agriculture. That’s an area larger than Yellow stone National Park. Loss of winter habitat in Mexico and Central America also threatens many species.

Human constructions from power lines to wind turbines to oil pits increase the dangers of migration for birds. The greatest hazard may seem mundane, but it’s ubiquitous: windows. Collisions with windows are estimated to kill a staggering billion birds in this country each year. Brightly lit skyscrapers are also a menace to songbirds, most migrating at night.

Climate change adds to the threats for migratory species. In addition to broad effects like widespread drought in the West and melting per mafrost in the Arctic, climate change can scramble the relationship be tween migration timing and the availability of food resources. Hungry migrants may arrive in spring to find that the peak of insect abundance has already passed.

Fortunately, there are many things each of us can do to help migrat ing birds. First, advocate for the preservation of bird habitats – and provide your own by planting native fruiting and flowering plants on your land.

Second, take steps to reduce bird collisions with your windows. Many solutions are available, including “Zen wind curtains”: light cords hanging in front of the glass. For DIY instructions, and much other information, go to: https://tinyurl.com/2hf558nj. And keep your cats inside, as free-ranging cats take a staggering toll on birds.

Finally, support organizations that advocate for birds and their habitats or promote research on migratory birds, such as the National Audubon Society, the American Bird Conservancy, and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

Together, we can save the lives of millions of birds, and help ensure that their incredible migratory journeys never end.

Eye on Del Norte

It has finally begun

For those who thought you’d nev er see this day, I have encouraging news. It has begun!

The IT is the abatement of the for mer Seaside Medical office building at 200 A St, in Crescent City.

The tragic saga of yet another failed effort to enhance the City is palpable. This latest venture un dertaken by principals Jason Roe and wife Julia Yim dates back to February of 2019 when the couple purchased the one and a half acre site for a modest mid-$300,000 price, including the ramshackle building.

The plan was to develop 36 high-end Planned Urban Development (PUD) condominiums. The idea went sour in short time and another eyesore was allowed to languish in the City’s most iconic area.

Fast forward to present day. The Court-appointed receiver Richardson Griswold, attorney and team were on site last week with all required paperwork, bond requirements and mitigation plan to remove the Health Code-violated building. On site were representatives from the City,

EYE ON DEL NORTE recog nizes and welcomes the arrival of the receiver. The Del Norte Superior Court action and City support to mit igate this nuisance is long overdue. The dilapidated building situated on arguably one of the most magnificent locations on the west coast of North America has been a blemish for decades. Soon this physical eyesore will be gone.

EYE ON DEL NORTE commends the City Manager, the Crescent City Police Department, Del Norte County Environmental Health, the receiver, the Court and most of all the community for finally, alas, emphatically exclaiming unequivo cally, enough is enough. Clean this mess up!

For those who’ve thought this day would never come, smile broadly. The abatement has begun. In the next few weeks, the vile remnants

of what was once Seaside Clinic will be a faded mem ory and a day to celebrate.

The future of what will situate on this breathtaking location has yet to be determined. Conjecture is premature.

For the time being, let’s clear the air and the blight which stains Cres cent City and just enjoy the pristine solitude of the proud Pacific and breath a sigh of appreciation and ex pression of gratitude for those most responsible for inserting this postage stamp parcel of splendor on Crescent City’s landscape.

THANK YOU for taking a Bite out of blight.

The Election Is Over, Now Let’s Get To Work!

I am writing this column the night before election day, so I do not know how the election turned out.

As of Monday, about thirty per cent of the registered county voters have returned their ballots. Midterm election voter turnout is usually lower than a Presidential election. I would be impressed if we exceed fifty percent.

The people who vote will decide the composition of the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors, School Board and Harbor Commission.

As a candidate for Harbor Com missioner, I can promise you that win or lose I will accept the results of the vote count. I recognize that this is a low bar and should be a giv en, but in this political climate it is worth stating the obvious. I support democracy and trust our elections.

If I win a position as Harbor Commissioner, I will have a seat at the table to help guide the future actions of the Harbor District. If I do not win, I will stay involved and find another way to help. I appreciate that among the five candidates vying for two positions, all the harbor can didates have been very cordial and respectful.

In contrast to the election she nanigans that are happening in other states or counties, we in Del Norte County have maintained a fairly civil campaign period.

To date we have not had any gun toting militia camped out at ballot drop boxes, and I expect there will be no disruptions at the polls.

Our elections staff have not been harassed or threatened or forced to

The picking of nits

I thoroughly enjoy receiving both our local papers every week. I don’t mind the occasional misspellings and grammatical errors I notice. That just adds to the nuances and character of small communities. Plus I live in a glass house regarding those issues. Most of us do.

However, I was taken aback a little finding both papers going back to the smaller King Crossword in favor of the larger Super Crossword. Personally, I liked the Super Cross word better. What was doubly disap pointing was the solution was for the Super not the King. Both errors were in both papers.

The late great Herb Caen of the S.F. Chronicle used to write about small things that bothered him that he termed “The Picking of Nits”. This tiny complaint would fit into that category. Hope to see the Super Crossword and the solution in next week’s papers.

quit to protect their families. This is a low threshold for civility, but I’ll take it.

I have said it before, but I will say it again, I trust our County Clerk Alissia Northrup to run a fair and transparent election for our county. Despite the increased complexity in election administration, she provides a great service to our community.

Del Norte County is often one of the first counties in California to report election results. We should value this and not take it for granted. Elections run smoothly and hon estly in Del Norte County, thanks to Alissia Northrup, her staff and volunteers.

Whether your favored candidate wins or loses, after the election is over, we should all adjust our knick ers and prepare to move forward. We have an ongoing obligation to moni tor our elected officials and speak up respectfully if we see something we disagree with. Conversely, we should also celebrate successes and praise a job well done when it happens.

I want to recognize the efforts of our local media to better inform the voters so we can make good choices. I am especially thankful for the hard work of Jessica Cejnar Andrews, reporter for the online Wild Rivers Outpost and her credible, timely reporting on local government meet ings and current issues. I know more about local affairs due to her diligent effort.

I greatly appreciate the opportu nity that the Triplicate has given me to write this weekly column. During this election I have tested the limits

Mission Possible update

Del Norte Mission Possible (DNMP) wants to accurately inform our community about what we are doing to help homeless persons here. Our organization is strategic in ap plying for and securing private and public funds. Secondly, we use these funds exactly as they specify. Third ly, we are seeing tangible rewards for our integrity. Fourthly, we are forming short-term and long-term goals to remain true to our mission statement while also adapting to constant change.

One of the ways to inform you is to use a Q & A format.

Q: “It’s one thing to provide food and clothing to homeless and un housed families and individuals. But then what do you do to help people beyond that?

A: Our Homeless Services Di rector, Daphne Cortese-Lambert, reported to the board recently that DNMP had helped 13 people get housed in one month. Homelessness is complex! This is NOT a one-size

of what I can write about and found that there are few restric tions. The edi torial staff have made it clear to me that they think any controversy that is stirred up by myself and my count er columnist is good for circulation.

If you are reading this, you have either bought a copy or are reading it online. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to subscribe to the Triplicate. This will help keep our only print newspaper on sound financial footing. There is a need to have a hometown paper that can report on the local news, sports and entertainment that you will not find anywhere else.

I will continue to write this col umn primarily about local issues, give praise when deserved and criti cize when warranted. I will endeavor to keep my opinions supported by fact with the hope of sparking an informed and rational debate on the issues of the day.

Engaging in civil discourse is essential for a representative gov ernment. We can disagree on issues without being disagreeable.

Thank you to all the citizens that voted and congratulations to the candidates that won.

The election is over, now let’s get to work!

fits all system! “Creativity, part nership, and persistence is key to housing here,” she reports. Two of our women in the Transitional House have disabilities that were barriers to housing. However placing those two individuals together, their strengths compensate for the other’s areas of weakness. They can become success ful partners. These women are now permanently housed without the use of any subsidies, HUD monies, or county programs. With resources from a private donor, two couples were able to clean-out trailers, move them to trailer parks, and establish permanent housing. Thanks to the generosity of the Del Norte Realtors Association, we were able to meet the needs of a family of 5 to get them back home to Texas. Another unhoused client has been placed as a live-in caregiver for someone we helped to get temporary housing last year.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. College of the Redwoods removes COVID-19 vaccine mandate

The College of the Redwoods Board of Trustees announced the end of their COVID-19 vaccine mandate at their Nov. 1 meeting.

Looking at the steep decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in the District, Governor Newsom’s announcement that he will end the state’s COVID-19 state of emergency on February 28, 2023, and to aid in CR’s continued efforts to

build back enrollments, the Board of Trustees retired two policies related to CR’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate - Board Policy 2900 and Administrative Policy 2900.

The Board also rescinded Resolution 782 that directed the District leadership to require evidence of COVID-19 vaccinations for all students and employees.

The Board’s actions lift the COVID vaccine mandate

for students and employees. Students are no longer required to be up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations in order to register for faceto-face classes.

CR recognizes that vaccinations help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and prevent serious disease. As such, the district still highly recommends that all students, faculty, and staff maintain an up-to-date vaccination status.

Razor clam fishery closes

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Charlton H. Bonham has closed the recreational razor clam fishery in Del Norte County following a recommendation from state health agencies determining that consumption of razor clams in the area poses a significant threat for domoic acid exposure.

Pseudo-nitzschia, a naturally occurring single-celled, marine alga, produces the potent neurotoxin domoic acid under certain ocean conditions. Bivalve shellfish, like clams and mussels,

in Del Norte County

accumulate the toxin without being harmed. In fact, razor clams are known to bioaccumulate domoic acid, meaning it may not clear their system until long after a bloom has abated.

Sampling of razor clams from Crescent Beach in Crescent City in late October found clams exceeding the current federal action level for domoic acid of greater than or equal to 20 parts per million.

Domoic acid poisoning in humans may occur within minutes to hours after consumption of affected seafood

and can result in signs and symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to permanent loss of short-term memory (Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning), coma or death. There is no way to prepare clams for consumption that will remove the toxin –cooking and freezing have no effect.

CDFW will continue to work with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment to collect, monitor and analyze razor clams to determine when the recreational clam fishery in Del Norte County can be reopened safely.

For more information on any fishery closure or health advisories, please visit: www. wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/ Ocean/Health-Advisories

To get the latest information on current fishing season closures related to domoic acid, please call CDFW’s Domoic Acid Fishery Closure Information Line at (831) 649-2883.

For the latest consumption warnings, please call CDPH’s Biotoxin information Line at (510) 412-4643 or toll-free at (800) 553-4133.

HOW

PG&E’s Community Wildfire Safety Program (CWSP) will continue to use Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings following the success of its pilot program. Enhanced safety settings allow PG&E to be more surgical in its approach to preventing wildfires. These settings will automatically turn off power within one-tenth of a second if an object comes in contact with a powerline. This approach is just one part of a multifaceted wildfire strategy which includes:

■ Undergrounding 175 miles of powerlines in high fire-threat areas as part of our multi-year goal of 10,000 miles.

■ Strengthening the electric grid with stronger poles and covered lines to reduce wildfire risks.

■ Installing microgrids that use generators to keep the electricity on during wildfire safety outages.

While these safety settings prevent wildfires, they also may result in additional outages for customers.
