Point of Honor memorial vandalized

The Crescent City Council on Monday shared condolences and support to those hoping to rebuild a part of the Point of Honor memorial dedicated to Hmong veterans which was recently destroyed by being ripped off its foundation and

shattered.

The obelisk which specifically thanks the Hmong and Laotian veterans who assisted the United States in what has been called “The Secret War” was destroyed after dark over the weekend. Police have no leads as to who might have committed the vandalism, but it’s been speculated it would have to have been a group of people due to the

weight of the granite memorial.

The monument featured an inscribed stone dedicated to the Hmong who fought as U.S. allies during secret campaigns into Laos and Cambodia. The secret fighters boosted U.S. military efforts in the Vietnam War. Many Hmong refugees resettled in America after

Warriors get set for the Big 4, key stretch run

It’s back to work for the Del Norte Warriors this weekend as they get set to open the Big 4 in football after a three-week mid season break.

The Warriors, who kick off league play at Eureka High on Saturday night, are 5-1 on the season and have dominated in all of their wins, outscoring their opponents by an average of more than 47 points.

Nevertheless, head coach Nick White is expecting a battle and believes every team will come into league play refocused and ready to go.

“I think it’ll be competitive like every year,” White said. “When you play league, everybody gets a chance to reset. You could say it’s the beginning of the season. All hope is alive and everybody’s going for that championship.”

With just three games for each team in the Big 4, there is little room for error and a defeat can end a team’s challenge quickly.

“Every game is the biggest game of the year,” the head coach added. “Everybody’s 0-0 right now.”

Del Norte, however, will be viewed as the team to beat.

For comparison sake, the Warriors are ranked No. 15 overall in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps, while Eureka is next best at No. 42, followed by No.

Wood help kick off 10,000-mile statewide broadband network project

THE TRIPLICATE

On October 13, Assembly member Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) joined members of Governor Newsom’s administration, legislators, local community representatives and advocates to push the “on” switch to the first leg of an open-access middle-mile network that will allow service providers to provide internet connections to unserved or underserved Californians. The 10,000 mile network, made possible by $6.5 billion in funding from SB 156, will be the nation’s largest when constructed.

Approximately one in five Californians do not have access to reliable high-speed internet.

“I wouldn’t have missed this opportunity for the world,” said Wood. “This is the biggest investment California has made yet to help get broadband access to all Californians. I’ve been fighting for this for my Northern California district, which is mostly rural, since being elected and it finally feels like there is progress.”

Construction began last week on State Route 67 near Poway in

San Diego County, where the first 500 feet of fiber optic cable was installed through conduit in the first segment of a $3.6 billion statewide project known as the “Middle Mile” broadband network. The San Diego area location was chosen because it will serve a part of the state that has gone without broadband connection, and because it is a “Dig Smart” opportunity, meaning its installation is more economical because it is being paired with an existing highway project.

“Our lives depend on equitable access to a reliable and fast internet connection whether it’s to be able to work, attend school, access health care services, receive important community information or simply to connect with family and friends,” said Wood.

The planned network will eventually cover the entire state to help bring reliable, high-speed internet access to the millions of Californians who do not have it now.

Californians interested in seeing if they qualify for discounted highspeed internet services available now may learn more at the state’s Broadband for All website.

the war.

The damage to the Hmong obelisk was too extensive to fix, therefore it will have to be re-made, according to officials.

Police Chief Richard Griffin expressed dismay at the Hmong section of the memorial being targeted.

“We’re considering it a hate crime,” he said. “While these kinds of things are hard to solve and I’m not making any promises, we will call for special circumstances if we find who did this.”

Councilor Blake Inscore echoed the chief’s dismay and offered help in restoring the memorial.

“We may have some funds we can offer to assist in rebuilding this for our community.” Mayor Jason Greenough shook his head in dismay at the destruction of the memorial and all vowed to rebuild it.

There was also discussion about putting in a camera and streaming images as well as lights in order to prevent further vandalism.

The Point of Honor was dedicated in July of 2019 at the corner of Front Street and Highway 101 in Cres

cent City. The monuments obelisks are seven foot tall and made of granite with 41 names on a wall of those who gave their lives from the community.

The cost of the Point of Honor was $175,000 includ ing $20,000 for maintenance costs, which may be used to replace the vandalized obelisk.

Meantime, veterans’ groups plan to begin fund raising to replace the Hmong monument at the Point of Honor.

The Crescent City Council also heard from GRI Con sulting, which was hired to evaluate roads in the city and told council one third of the city’s streets are in what they call “fair” condition which means the streets are still OK but need upgrading.

“We need to jump into action before it gets expen sive,” according to consultant Lindsi Hammond.

She suggested surface treatment now to save money on future treatment if the roads fall into disrepair.

Hammond also informed council that a quarter of the streets are in poor condition and need repair at a greater expense.

She offered several possi ble options from maintaining the streets in current con

dition at a cost of roughly $250,000 per year or go in and fix the backlog of streets at a current cost of $7.5 million. She told the council if they wait, that amount will go up to closer to $18.7 million.

Councilors praised Mea sure S, which increased sales tax by 1% generating roughly $1.3 million for general use like street repair. The measure passed in 2020 and it gives the council flexibility for projects like road repair.

Next steps will be a work shop to decide road priorities.

The Council, meeting as the Housing Authority, also agreed in its Monday meeting to offer up to 30 vouchers for Crescent City unhoused residents to occupy the Legacy which is being converted from a mo tel to permanent housing.

The Legacy is a Del Norte County owned property which is being converted into permanent occupancy.

The city’s voucher pro gram will assist in funding as it shows the building is needed and will have full occupancy.

Inscore described issuing the vouchers as a win/win.

“It provides us an opportu nity to place people and show that we have a need that’s being met,” he said.

Area One Agency on Aging announces volunteer teaching

Area One Agency on Aging and Senior Planet are announcing a call for volunteer technology trainers to bridge the digital divide with older adults in our communities. To teach is to touch a life forever, please help us meet the growing demand by sharing your passion and enthusiasm in service to others.

The trainer course will cover the Senior Planet curriculum. – The class meets five times in November. Upon completion, volunteers will be able to teach the following: what an iPad computer is and what it can do, how to access the internet, setup and use email and download and use common applications, like Zoom. This training course is

just the beginning--A1AA would like to offer more free id workshops, courses, lectures, and training locations. To do that, we need more volunteer teachers. Please contact Shauna McKenna at smckenna@a1aa.org with any questions or to sign up to become a volunteer.

When the pandemic hit in mid-March 2020, the need to order prescriptions, connect on-line with family members or schedule doctor appointments, became a real challenge, especially for older adults who didn’t own a computer, know how to use the internet, or own a smartphone.

A1AA received an initial supply of iPads, with twoyear data plans, as part of the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). These funds were designed to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis by directing vital resources to the most vulnerable.

The original statewide rollout was slow with no training offered to recipients. A1AA partnered with Senior Planet to become a certified trainer of Senior Planet courses, initially training three staff. Other service providers were invited to the second round of the trainer classes.

Since then, the training has

gained traction as a reliable way to meet extreme community needs.

The ongoing interest by older adults in iPad and training means more instructors are needed.

Recent funding through the State Master Plan on Aging will provide A1AA with additional iPads and data plans.

While this new funding includes access to online training or telephone support, A1AA prefers to offer the iPad courses face to face with local trainers.

“For some, this is the first time they have used any kind of tablet or device and they have a lot of questions. Having the teacher in the room just makes it easier for them,” says Meghan Gallagher, director of social services at A1AA and one of the certified instructors.

Ginny Burstein said, “I loved that the class gave me the opportunity to be with someone who could take the time to work with me and answer all my questions. It was a great learning environment. I feel more comfortable communicating with email now.”

Katy Garrison said, “I loved the class and enjoyed learning to make albums of my pictures and using the Kindle application to read.”

Vote No on Measure U

As president of the Del Norte County Employees Association SEIU 1021, I want to address the unfounded criticisms directed towards county employees funded by Measure R. I strongly condemn the scape goating conducted by supporters of Measure U who solely focus on the salaries of public safety employees and staff hired for vital services and not on the benefits they provide to residents and those who visit our coastal community.

First, county employees do not make “high-paying” salaries. Some positions in the county start slightly above current minimum wage. The jobs impacted by Measure R require specific education, training and skills to optimally serve county residents. Despite wage increases, county employees’ salaries still fall behind that of other counties and businesses like Walmart and McDonald’s. The result is understaffed de partments which negatively impact public safety and essential services residents demand.

Second, you can’t demand that employees take a cut in salaries and benefits and then turn around and agree that we earn low wages. That makes no sense. No union in their right mind would ever voluntarily propose wage cuts especially when salaries are low to begin with.

Third, a loss of any county employee is a loss to the community. We are a part of this county – we live here, shop here, worship here, our kids go to the same schools, play the same sports, and we attend the same community functions. We pay the same taxes and bills, and have families we provide for. We’re not part of the “haves.” You want to know who we are?

We’re the deputy sheriff pulling double duty to keep our streets safe The dispatcher answering your emergency call late at night

The DA investigator investigating crimes for prosecution

The probation officer making sure that offenders follow through on the terms of their probation

The code enforcement officer tackling blight to keep our community clean

The animal control officer addressing nuisances and neglect of ani mals

The planner working to further develop and improve our county infrastructure

Emergency services who prepare for and respond to natural disasters and emergencies to protect our lives and property

Employees who greet and provide services and assistance to our honored veterans

If Measure U passes, there may be less of US to serve YOU. Is that what you want? Is that what you think our county deserves?

The Sheriff’s Employees Association and DNCEA SEIU 1021 agree that Less is Not More, that scapegoating county employees will not help this community who we proudly serve. Measure U will not keep Del Norte County safe, clean and growing. Measure U is NOT good for you! We ask you for your support. Vote NO on Measure U. Norma Williams Chapter President

Setting the record straight

I am writing to clarify and set the record straight. It seems that Mr. Henricks didn’t do his homework in his opinion piece in the Triplicate on October 7th, Local Experience Matters on School Board. To not share all of the facts can mislead voters.

As stated in his “opinion piece” regarding the school board candi dates…yes one did move from Los Angeles, Abbie Crist and one from Paradise, Michael Greer, but this doesn’t make them “not local.”

Abbie Crist, running for School Board District 2, grew up in Del Norte County, attending Del Norte Schools from kindergarten through high school, which prepared her for a college education at UC Davis and then Loyola Law School. Her parents were both educators at Del Norte High. Her mother, Faith Crist, served on the Del Norte County School Board.

Her family has lived in Del Norte for over 60 years. I fail to under stand why Abbie Crist isn’t considered local. When Crist came home with her husband in 2019, she not only began to serve as a CASA but also on the board of Nick and Lisa Rail’s Partnership for the Perform ing Arts. She is hardly a stranger to Del Norte, or the challenges faced by our students or the educational problems that face our community. Her deep ties to the Del Norte School District will be well served by her years of experience as an attorney. Her work required fully inves tigating issues including talking to all involved parties, distilling the matter down to essential facts, then engaging in negotiations resulting in consensus.

These skills will be an asset to our school district and are sorely needed. She brings her own unique skill set to the school board. Abbie Crist is the best choice to vote for School Board District 2 on Novem ber 8th.

Michael Greer, running for School Board District 5, has a lifetime of experience that uniquely qualifies him to serve on the School Board. He was a Special Eduction educator for 20 years in Sutter County; President of the Sutter County Teachers Association and Chair of the California Teachers Association for Feather River Service Center that served a 5-county area. Having served 14 years on the Paradise Unified School District School Board, and President at the time of the devas tating Paradise fire, he was instrumental in the process to rebuild the school district. He has lobbied in Washington DC for Rural Schools funding.

These funds replaced some of the taxes lost when logging stopped. He has also lobbied in Sacramento to increase school funding for programs and infrastructure, especially for small school districts. Upon moving to Del Norte County, Greer signed up as a substitute teacher, filling a needed long term sub position at Pine Grove and the following year at Joe Hamilton.

This year Greer continues to sub at different schools that serve district 5 including Joe Hamilton, Crescent Elk and Del Norte High, and recently Margaret Keating. Michael’s teaching, school board and coaching knowledge, both past and present, along with his experience with teachers, administrators and students makes Michael Greer the best choice to vote for School Board District 5 on November 8th. Both candidates will fairly represent students, parents, staff and the community on the School Board.

The Notable Empty Chair

Last Wednesday, I attended the candidate forum for School Board and County Supervisor sponsored by the Del Norte Realtors Association. It was informative to watch these candidates field questions about im portant local issues. However, what was most notable was the empty chair.

There is nothing comparable to seeing a candidate in a live fo rum to help evaluate a candidate’s knowledge and character. It is a test of what they must do if they are elected; face the public, answer difficult questions and maintain de corum. A voter can learn more about a candidate in an open forum than all the postcards, ads and yard signs combined.

All four school board candidates were in attendance: William Meri wether and Abbie Crist who are running for School Board in the 2nd District; and Phillip Williams and Michael Greer who are running for School Board in the 5th District. Only voters in these districts can vote for these candidates. Neverthe less, the outcome of this election will add two new school board members and will define the character of the school board.

This panel was excellent to watch. All the candidates respectfully inter acted with each other in a thoughtful conversation about education issues. It was instructive to hear them out line their views and goals. It appears that all of them would be qualified to serve on the school board.

In a surprising twist to the 2nd District race, Will Meriwether is conceding that Abbie Crist is the most qualified candidate for the 2nd District. This is an uncommon demonstration of commitment to the greater good. Will is recommending Phillip Williams for District 5 and Abbie Crist for District 2 because of their deep local roots and dedication to our community.

Before the School Board can didates, the forum began with the

Eye on Del Norte

Supervisor candidates. There was Supervisor Susan Masten, Dean Wilson, Patty Adams and an empty chair. The sponsors provided no explanation why there was an empty chair instead of a candidate. It left me to wonder why a serious can didate would not participate in this event.

On the prior night, the True North Organizing Network invited all the School Board and Supervisor candidates to a virtual forum which was broadcast online. I was told by a True North organizer that the absent candidate also did not attend their event. He had a “prior engagement.”

I asked the Realtors Association organizer why the missing candidate did not come to their event. She said that they left a voice mail, texted, and sent emails, but did not receive a response. She observed that this “does not instill confidence.”

Not showing up is disrespectful to the voters who tuned in to learn more about the candidates. It makes me question their commitment to attend the many meetings that are required of a County Supervisor. Showing up is a low bar but remember the old saying that the world is run by the people that show up.

The three Supervisor candidates that were present answered questions and illuminated their positions on issues.

I was dismayed by some of the un compassionate answers from Wilson regarding social issues. When Wilson stated that being homeless is a “life choice,” it occurred to me that during his 35 years as a law enforcement officer, he mostly met troublesome homeless people when responding to 911 calls. This could skew his view since he primarily interacted with the “problem” homeless people. But there are also veterans, seniors, children, and families that are home less and not by choice, but rather by circumstances beyond their control.

A career in law enforcement may produce a particular set of skills

that do not necessarily provide the experience, qualifica tions, and temperament to effec tively address complex social and economic issues as a County Supervisor.

In contrast, I am impressed with Supervisor Masten’s broad knowl edge and experience in business, economic development, and public service. Her answers reflected her commitment to represent people over politics. She clearly cares about our community and will represent all the people who live here.

Patty Adams also did well and seems like a reasonable choice for Supervisor. As I watched Sue Masten and Patty Adams interact, I imagined how different the Board of Supervisors would be if we had three intelligent and articulate women Supervisors. I have watched Su pervisors Masten and Starkey work effectively together and I think Patty Adams would complement this fresh approach to good governance.

As the leader of the local Demo cratic Party, I cannot endorse Patty Adams, a Republican, without run ning afoul of party rules. However, I live in the 4th District and there is no Democrat running, so I must decide which of the two Republicans to vote for.

It would have been helpful to compare both District 4 candidates side by side, but in the end the absence of one of the candidates was the deciding factor. If I must choose between an empty chair or the candi date that shows up, I will vote for the one that shows up.

A new era may soon be on the horizon in Del Norte County

Are new faces coming to the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors? Very likely.

With the departure of Gerry Hem mingsen, a significant bully influence will be exiting the Flynn Center. Refreshing and hopeful!

In District Four, candidates Joey Borges and Patty Adams will face off to see who takes the Oath, January 2.

Borges won the Primary with a 46.2 percent voter approval to Ad ams 25.2. Adams faces a long hike up a steep trail.

In District 5, three-term Sheriff Dean Wilson matches up against Gov. Gavin Newsom-appointed Susan Masten to fill the balance of recently-passed away Bob Berkow itz’ term, which sunsets at the end of 2024. Sheriff Wilson prevailed in the Primary with a 41 plus percent vote margin (125 vote advantage) to Masten’s 31.3 percent approval. Party affiliation may also be a factor. Republicans outnumber Democrats almost two-to-one in District Five.

The question lingers whether the political interference of Gavin Newsom has hurt (or helped) candi date Masten who had already filed papers to run for the remainder of the Berkowitz term. The unpopular Governor has never won a Del Norte County election and his appoint ment of Masten to incumbency may have compromised her chances of winning the supervisor position.

One thing about Del Norters; they don’t like to be told how to vote and certainly by a less than popu lar Govenor. The jury’s still out on Newsom’s manicured thumbnail on this election.

Each of the candidates were asked three questions:

• What’s your vision for the County?

• What are your priorities in your first 90 days after taking your Oath?

• What’s your position (support or

repeal) on the Measure U sales tax?

District Four:

Joey Borges is running because he sees quality of life heading in the wrong direction. The entrepre neur/ excavation contractor hopes to improve the quality of life for Del Norters and their families. Says Borges, “ There’s too much at stake in Del Norte. Inflation and taxes are crippling folks. I’m going to do everything in my power and influ ence to improve quality of life in District Four and across Del Norte County. We must keep our dollars in our community. “ When asked about his first 90 days, Borges reminded me that period of time only covers six meetings. He asked if he could share his transition over a six month period. “ I’ve a steep learning curve to climb abut I’m especially con cerned about the discussion-less Consent Agenda. The Board needs to take a closer look at these auto matic approvals and examine the greater good (or lack of ) for some of these pass-through State funds.”

Candidate Borges observes higher taxes burdening the public. “ Look at the price of fuel and its impact on grocery prices. Outrageous and unsustainable! ”

Candidate Borges says he’ll vote YES on Measure U, and repeal the higher County sales tax. Borges says, “ We must live within our means. “

• ANALYSIS:

Joey Borges does not come across as a politician. His responses are crisp and direct; that’s a rare quality in a candidate. His commitment to youth sports as a coach and mentor are admirable and commendable. The world of local politics is often topsy-turvy and sometimes unpre dictable. Borges is a quick learner and possesses excellent people skills.

support for a healthy, safe, sustainable future. Says Adams, “ I will research topics and orient myself with the other Supervisors (in) on-going issues. I will network, poll constit uents and other Supervisors. I will make informed decisions on con cerns and issues.” Adams equates the recent increase in the sales tax, (which was not the question asked), and rejects any new taxes. She will vote NO on repealing the 1 percent sales tax Measure U. Adams no vote will contribute to keep in place the existing higher 8.25 percent County sales tax for fear its repeal will mean a loss of (government) jobs.

• ANALYSIS: Without acting in a capacity as the candidate’s public relations agent, I share my experience as a supervisor and Ms. Adams’ perception of Cal ifornia government reality. All Su pervisors, like the public, may view the Agenda on Friday afternoon, 72 hours before the Tuesday meeting. One may have just the week-end and Monday to conduct any research.

Embracing the razor-thin passage of Measure R and its $1.795 Mil lion boost to the General Fund with only a 50% allocation of funding is transparently dishonest. The polling of constituents is also dangerous. Is there a science to her polling? Each constituent renders a different opin ion. There are scores of decisions to be made. the Consent Agenda alone may have as many as 30 items. Ms. Adams needs to be a leader and become informed expediently if she plans to effectuate her vision. I might suggest candidate Adams study the Brown Act on conducting any polling of Supervisors, unless it’s during a Public Meeting. Adams

*** Use Permit for Replacement and Expansion of a Legal NonConforming Residence. The applicant proposes to replace and expand the existing legal nonconforming residence located at 530 N. Pebble Beach Drive. The existing residence was placed prior to implementation of zoning for the area and was placed a distance of 14 feet from the front property line. The new home will maintain the existing nonconforming setback of 14 feet, where the zone district would normally require a setback of 25 feet. The new two-story residence will be approximately 32 feet in height and 2,952 square feet with an additional 1,310 square feet of porches and patios. APN 120038-016 - UP2306 located at 530 N. *** Use Permit for a Temporary Mobile Cellular Tower. The applicant proposes to place a temporary mobile cell tower facility in the form of a Cell on Light Truck (COLT) located at 4235 Highway 169 in Klamath Glen. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public,

The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. College of the Redwoods presents Encounters: New Work by Nicole Jean Hill and David Woody

College of the Redwoods presents two perspectives on the nature of wilderness in photographs by Nicole Jean Hill and David Woody. A public reception and artists’ talk will take place at the gallery on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Nicole Jean Hill’s images explore the efforts behind wilderness management and what they might reveal about our need to define and conserve ‘the wild.’

For more than a decade, Hill has been photographing various intersections between humans, animals, and the land, toward “participating in and responding to the more realistic version of wilderness.”

David Woody’s pictures investigate romantic tensions in the rugged, yet ephemeral, landscapes of the North Coast, and the allure they exert on people living or passing through it. “One becomes aware of time in a different way here,” Woody writes, “in the forests, by the ocean, on the bay, time is measured in atmospheric

occurrences…one cannot escape being impacted by the wilderness.”

Nicole Jean Hill is an artist, educator, and editor, living and working in Eureka. She is the chair of the Art + Film Department at Cal Poly Humboldt, and her most recent publication, “Encampment, Wyoming,” about the work of pioneer photogra-

pher Lora Webb Nichols, was published in 2021 by Fw:Books. David Woody lives and works in Eureka. He teaches in the Department of Art + Film at Cal Poly Humboldt, has exhibited and published widely, and has work in the permanent collection of National Portrait Gallery.

The College of the Red-

woods Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.redwoods.edu/artgallery or call the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences office at (707) 4764559.

less than candid answer on the Measure U issue is disturbing. The Measure R increase passed on the narrowest of margin. To equate Measure R tax as an established tax is cunning and disingenuous.

District Five: Sheriff Dean Wilson’s vision is to help solve problems, not just in District Five but County-wide. Candidate Wilson identifies the challenges: The spiked rate of all crime, homeless population, roads access and unfilled labor needs. Wilson underscores Klamath’s lack of access to food, medicine and law enforcement. He states, “ I see trouble on the horizon in our Country with inflation and rising interest rates and predicts conditions will worsen. We must prepare and plan ahead in dealing with these conditions. We must look to one another, not to government. “ Wilson sees his first 90 days in Office in working with his colleague Supervisors in developing a strategy to successfully navigate troubling times ahead. Sheriff Wilson plans to vote YES on U. He concludes, “ The County needs to work within its budget.”

tourism and foster economic growth.” Since candidate Masten was appointed by the Governor, she’s already experienced her first 90 days and vows to continue building upon partnerships and coalitions already established. Fifth District candidate Masten will vote NO on Measure U, keeping the Sales tax 13.4 percent higher than two years ago. Masten cites her concerns for public safety, emergency services and Code Enforcement.

Dean Wilson’s 35 years in law enforcement taught him well. Del Norte must be prepared for some dark days ahead. Candidate Wilson is a natural leader and displays rare wisdom not often seen in local government. Wilson’s self-reliant display of independence is noteworthy. The retired Sheriff’s ability to work with colleague Supervisors will be essential in weathering some turbulent times ahead. Dean Wilson has the talent and skillset to represent District Five and Del Norte County.

**

Appointed Supervisor candidate Sue Masten’s vision is to secure more grants and public resources into Del Norte County. States Masten, “These resources will support our State and National Parks, increase recreation opportunities and will bring in more

The flowery words of pure politician Susan Masten deny the reality of what Del Norte is today: a County addicted to dependency The heavy reliance on grants and State / Federal assistance comes with lots of puppet strings attached and continued reliance on Sacramento and Washington will NOT bring wealth to Del Norte County. It will bring more dependency and less prosperity. What the appointed Supervisor is not telling you is the not-so-holy alliance with the Newsom machine, the role she played in being appointed, the sale of her Steelhead Lodge business to the State and the ultimate conversion of the property into one of Sen. Mike McGuire’s Operation Homekey projects for housing the so-called homeless into Klamath Glen with zero support services on site. Susan Masten needs to explain her role in benefiting from a $600,000 plus windfall on the sale of the Steelhead, from this unholy alliance. Is her appointment a glaring example of Quid Pro Quo? These lingering questions may doom Masten’s quest. **

As many of you readers understand. I write directly and often times bluntly. No apologies proffered. Last week. A candidate for Harbor Commission alleged libel charges against me for reporting a factual statement about the candidate’s admitted loss of $25,000 of public funds. Truth is not libel. As a result of my correct reporting, the candidate was quite upset with my disclosure. Candidate Masten has also been subject to a fair amount of critique. Candidate Masten had been respectful, civil and dare I say charming in all of our interactions. Clearly, candidate Masten and I do not see the County the same way but does she have the quality of aplomb? Indeed. She displays great poise as a candidate. I appreciate the candidate’s candor.

Voting continues until 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 8. Roger Gitlin was a twoterm retired Del Norte County Supervisor. He resides in Crescent City.

The heart, lungs, kidneys, skin and brain can be a ected. COVID also can cause multi-system inflammatory syndrome (inflammation of multiple organs), autoimmune conditions and other new health conditions.

Children are not immune to long COVID.

A recent study found that 10 percent of children hospitalized with COVID-19 experienced fatigue, weakness, coughing, di culty breathing and shortness of breath three months later. The study also linked higher numbers of symptoms with an increased likelihood of developing long COVID.

Post-COVID-19 conditions can occur regardless of the severity of the infection.

Although long COVID-19 conditions are more likely in people who had severe COVID illness, even mild and asymptomatic cases can result in long-term e ects.

Vaccination & masking reduce the risk.

Getting vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and masking when appropriate can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and post-COVID conditions.

Seek medical attention.

If your COVID-19 symptoms do not improve after four or more weeks, contact your health care provider. While long COVID is still being studied, you and your provider can come up with a medical plan to help improve your symptoms and quality of life. Parents and caregivers should monitor children and follow up with their provider if symptoms linger or new symptoms occur.

Help the whole family stay healthy by keeping up-to-date with vaccination and boosters. Go to MyTurn.ca.gov to find a vaccine near you or call 833-422-4255.

Warriors

48 St. Bernard’s and No. 68 Fortuna.

The league champion also receives a guaranteed home game in the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs, which could be particularly beneficial for Del Norte.

Most teams in the Bay Area are not used to traveling that far for games, and they’re generally not used to playing in front of crowds as large as those that show up for Del Norte games.

Because of their recent success in the playoffs, however, the Warriors have been moved up to Division 4 this

year, which will make their bid for a section championship more challenging.

Del Norte is currently ranked No. 4 in the bracket, behind Marin Catholic (7-0), Acalanes (6-1) and Cardinal Newman (5-2), and winning the league and hosting a firstround playoff game could be crucial to their postseason hopes.

The good news for the Warriors is that they have had three weeks without interruption to prepare for the Big 4, and they also have dominated Eureka in recent times, beating the Loggers 45-0 in their last game, after also shutting them out 42-0 late last season.

White, however, is taking nothing for granted.

“They’re physical, they’ve

got some really good players, and it’s their Homecoming game,” he said of the Loggers. “They’re going to be excited to play and we have to match their intensity.”

The coach and his players used their midseason break to work on some basics and to refocus ahead of the key stretch run.

“It went well in practice,” White said. “We worked on a lot of fundamentals and just trying to stay crisp as far as the little things go. I think we had a really good two weeks of practice. And we got a chance to reflect on what we need to work on.”

The team also used the midseason break to get healthy and White is hoping to have a full roster for the trip to Eureka, with Jacob

Dane (OL/DL), Gavin Skerik (FB/MLB) and Aden Mintonye (RB/OLB) all expected to be available after missing some recent games.

A lack of depth, however, has not been a problem for Del Norte, and seeing so many players step up has impressed the coach.

“I think every kid being able to step up when they were asked to step up is a huge part of (our success),” he said.

“We’ve had some injuries and we haven’t missed a beat, so I’ve been really impressed with our whole team. Everybody wants to play. Everybody wants to learn and compete.”

Saturday night’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the JVs playing at 5 p.m.
