Community braces for gift of giving

Santa’s little helpers have begun going about their business in Lincoln City as several service organizations and citizens have started the process of stuffing stockings, so to speak. The City’s annual food and toy drives, spearheaded by North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District #1 (NLFR) and the Elks and Eagles clubs, are under

way even before Halloween has arrived. Coupled with corporate efforts, public schools and individual contributions, Lincoln City has reasserted its annual goal of exceeding its unparalleled success of the season before in preparing to warm the homes of the needy with food and gifts and gestures of love. “It was quite a little Santa’s workshop down here,” said Jan Hall, Elks Club bookkeeper, on

the 250 baskets her charitable organization assembled like elves last Christmas for the many in need who wondered if Santa would make a visit to their house. The need this year is just as great and the goal that much higher, NLFR volunteer firefighter Marc McPherson said. See CARING, Page A6

Food and toys will be distributed to the local needy during this year’s holiday giving.

Salmon River fishing fit for a king JIM FOSSUM sports@thenewsguard.com

In fishing parlance, the Salmon River has often been to the Siletz what fishermen might not consider a keeper. Not this fall, however.

The Chinook salmon are hitting and cries of ‘Fish on!” have taken on new meaning, making anglers feel like the kings they have been netting. “A lot of people are saying the fishing on this river this year is the best they’ve seen since 2004,” said Marshall Stickrod,

owner of Stickrod Bait Co., 1257 Salmon River Highway, in Otis. That year was far and away a record year here. It was phenomenal fishing, and this year’s set up pretty much the same.” See FISHING, Page A9

“You go from the top of the world right down to the bottom,” said Bev Mackey of Siletz after first winning a $1 million jackpot and than being told she could not collect the money. Mackey won the prize July 23, 2012, at the Chinook Winds Casino Resort. She played the “Spin 4 a Million” swipe-to-win machine in the lobby of the casino. “It looks like a slot machine, but instead of putting in money, you use your casino royalty card to swipe,” said Mackey. “I handed the card to a casino employee who swiped for me. The cylinders came up one million and the machine spit out a slip of paper that read I won $50,000 a year for 20 years and my name was printed right on the slip.” Mackey said she was so excited she started telling other people in the lobby that she had won the $1 million jackpot. “I told everybody I knew in 15 minutes that I won and you could hear See JACKPOT, Page A6

Bomb forces school evacuation, review of procedures JEREMY C. RUARK jruark@coountrymedia.net

Device (EPCD), referred to as a seal bomb. EPCDs are commonly used by local fisherman to protect their fishing gear from predators during fishing operations.

Deputies and fire officials conducted a full search of the school and no other explosive devices were located. At approximately 4 p.m.,

determined school officials had not received any oral or written threats before, during, or after the incident, or any indication the device was to be detonated. Officials speculated that the device could have simply fallen out of the students’ pocket. See BOMB, Page A6

The Lincoln County Juvenile Department and Lincoln County District Attorneys Office will review the investigation results following the Oct. 16 evacuation of Toledo Jr. / Sr. High School. Students and staff were evacuated from the building shortly after 2 p.m. following the discovery of a explosive device on the floor of a classroom by teacher Joe Jordan who notified assistant principal, Paul Tucker. School officials ordered an immediate evacuation and Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies, Toledo Police and Toledo Fire Department were called to the school. Investigators determined that the device was an Explosive Pest Control
