Getting chilly Q&A Warming shelters prepare for low temperatures CASSIE RUUD cruud@countrymedia.net
The Lincoln City Warming Shelter Board is gearing up for the upcoming cold season and volunteers and donations are needed as summer turns into fall. The News Guard reached out to Warming Shelter Operations Manager Lynne Rudstrom— the following is a conversation between TNG and Rudstrom. TNG: Where are the shelters, and are both ready to go in the event of a cold snap? Rudstrom: The board is planning on opening the North shelter, which is located at the Congregational Church of Lincoln City. In order to open the South shelter, which is located in Taft, we need volunteers, including an operations manager and overnight volunteers. TNG: Is there a need for any specific items for the shelters? Rudstrom: The organization cannot operate the shelters without local financial support. Please consider donating by going to our website lincolncitywarmingshelter.com, pushing the donation button or mailing a check to P.O. Box 198, Lincoln City, OR. 97367. Your donations help provide transportation, meals, a warm cot, warm clothing, and resource counseling to the homeless, who otherwise could freeze to death. See WARMING SHELTER, Page A2

The calls to Animal Control started to come as no surprise. Reports of a dog, probably a German shepherd, who was running loose in Lincoln City and had proved surprisingly slippery. “We just couldn’t seem to catch him, said Laura Braxling of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. “We would even go out there as a group and try to corral him and still couldn’t manage to
get him. For over two months the dog, who showed no aggression, evaded capture. But he didn’t shun assistance. “People in Lincoln City were feeding him, Braxton said. “He was pretty popular. One of those was people was Jessica Welsch, who works at the Coho Oceanfront Lodge. “A lot of my co-workers were feeding him too, she said. “Finally one of them managed to get a leash around him, and I decided to take him to the
Tesla charging stations light up the mall GRETCHEN AMMERMAN gammerman@countrymedia.net
An eerie red glow has been lighting up the south side of the Lincoln City Outlets since last month. But don’t call Moulder and Scully; it’s just a few Tesla charging stations. Eight, to be exact. A Tesla station or Tesla Supercharger station is a network of fast-charging stations built by Tesla Motors for their allelectric manufactured vehicles (Model S and Model X). Tesla began building the network in 2012. “The Tesla Lincoln City Supercharger is joining other nearby Supercharger stations in Seaside, Woodburn and Eugene, said Tesla Motor’s Alexis Georgeson. “We place Superchargers along major corridors that our customers often travel and that connect city centers. Tesla’s electric vehicles are designed to travel about 300 miles on one charge. “The Tesla Supercharger is substantially more powerful than any charging technology to date, said Georgeson. “They provide up to 120 kilowatts of power and replenish half a charge in twenty minutes. So a shopping trip at the mall even shorter than an hour would still fully charge a car. “It took us about 1.5 years to decide to let them in, said mall manager Dianne Kutz. Two killed in accident on Hwy 18 FOR THE NEWS GUARD
A trip to the coast to celebrate a birthday ended up costing the lives of Sarah S Trujillo and Rebeca M Amado, both 20, of Woodburn. On Sept. 17 at about 6:40 p.m., Oregon State Police Troopers, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, and other emergency vehicles responded to the report of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 18 near milepost 1.5, just east of Lincoln City. Preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Highway 18 when it failed to negotiate a corner on the wet roadway. The Honda slid into the oncoming lane where it collided with a westbound 2010 Kia Soul. The driver of the Honda, Maricela R Trujillo, age 42, of Woodburn received life threatening injuries and was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. Her two passengers, Trujillo and Amado, were declared deceased on scene.

I think he was just happy to get out of the rain. On the day of his capture, Rambler, as he became known at the shelter, was lying in a puddle in the hotel’s parking lot. “He was brought in on August 31, Braxling said. “We have a mandatory hold for strays, but
