Hospital proposals on review Architects to present their ideas this week RICK MARK rmark@countrymedia.net NEWS GUARD PHOTO/CASSIE RUUD

Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital is expecting to see this week the first presentations from architectural firms with proposals for a new hospital in Lincoln City. Noting that a new hospital “can be an economic driver that brings new people to town, Dr. Lesley Ogden, the hospital CEO, told a Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce luncheon forum last week that four architectural firms had submitted proposals. “If we do this right, folks could look at this area and say, ‘We were hesitant to move here, but we looked at the hospital and decided it’s all right,’ Ogden said, adding, “there’s something magic about sparkly exteriors. The firms that have submitted proposals are based in Seattle, Denver and California, she said. FOURTH of JULY Fireworks lit up the sky all up and down the Oregon Coast as people gathered to celebrate Independence Day. Lincoln City put on its electronically controlled, musically synchronized fireworks display over Siletz Bay. Celebrations were held as well at Devils Lake on Sunday with fireworks and a boat parade. Gleneden Beach held its traditional all-day celebration, starting with a pancake breakfast and building to a climax with its huge parade, which was led by a U.S. Coast Guard honor guard out of Depoe Bay. Chamber will dance its way to new leadership

VOL. 89 | NO. 27

The Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce will hand the reins to a new leader this week, but the transition won’t be complete until outgoing President Heather Hatton and incoming President Rachel Garnick put their dancing shoes on. The Board Transition Dinner, which will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, July 8, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, will include a dance-off between Hatton and Garnick at the end of the evening. Hatton said Garnick, now a Chamber board member, brings fresh ideas to the table. “I think what Rachel is going to bring is the youth, honesty and transparency – and keeping that transparency alive, she said. “I think with any kind of nonprofit, government should be as transparent as possible to the businesses and the community, because without that you would lose that trust.

community, Garnick said. “Being Chamber president I not only receive the honor of working with an incredible board of directors but also get the opportunity to be a larger part of a beneficial organization that helps our business community succeed! Garnick said the position would involve supporting the many events and committees that make up the Chamber and she is prepared to work hard and with others to succeed. “As president, it is very important to me that I am supporting as many events and committees as I, myself, can, Garnick said. “That being said, a possible challenge could be remembering that I am one person and setting realistic goals for myself as I proceed this year. As much as I would love to be in multiple places at once – I’m still working on how to gain that power – it is one of the many reasons why I’m so grateful

“I think Rachel is very transparent and people are going to see a side of her that is really strong and it’s going to be exciting. She is so smart and I am excited to see what Rachel Garnick she has in store. Hatton said the president has to pay attention to the maintenance of the Chamber. “The goal of any president is more or less to keep the ship afloat, she said. “They have to really build a cohesive board that is strong in the community. And making sure the bond between the board and the executive director is strong and positive. After that it is really just being that positive voice and face in the Chamber. You have to fight for your businesses to make sure they are getting what they need. Garnick said the transi-
