Incoming Family Promise of Lincoln County Executive Director has been shadowing current Executive Director Hanna Connett the past two weeks to learn the nuances of the position when she takes it on in August. “I have a lot of reading material, Reyes said. “There is a lot to research to fully understand the program a little bit better, but I’m very excited to see what Hanna has been doing all this time and try to recreate that. Reyes said her training will give her a lot to consider and that she just wants to “absorb it all. “I only get a smidge of time with Hanna, so I want to make the most of it, she said. This is one of many upcoming changes and events the program will be working on in the coming months. “We’re working on a mentoring program, said Connett. “Our volunteer coordinator Shiana Weaver is putting it together. It’s based off the idea of volunteers having a huge impact. Connett explained that volunteers for the program already take time to get to know families in need and expand the social network for said families. “We want to take that a step further, she said. “Instead of just having dinner, really have a group of volunteers who want to be partnered with a family. Develop that friendship one-on-one, give them a listening ear, a support system and be a role

model for some of those effective and healthy habits we teach in our classes. Family Promise experienced a father who was looking to be involved in his children’s lives again, but had little experience in parenting. “He was eager to learn, she said. “I was hoping to find another father who has been a good example that this new father could meet with and model after. To show him what it looks like to be a father. The program is still in its early days, but Connett said that within a few more weeks it would be implemented and families would be paired with volunteers. People who are interested in volunteering with the mentoring program are welcome to stop by or call the Family Promise Day Center in Taft for more information. “If you like talking to people, one-on-one, everyone has something they can share, she said. “Some people have cooking skills, or maybe you can go on a walk with a mother and demonstrate healthy habits. It’s really pretty wide open for whatever people’s skills are and how they want to connect to them and be a support system for families. Another upcoming change will involve renovations to the day center and the apartment behind it, which houses families in need. “Family Promise is getting a makeover! Connett grinned. “Over the summer our goals are to get new furnaces in—they haven’t

We got a grant from the Siletz Charitable Contribution Fund to replace them. We plan to rip out the carpets— they are very old and high traffic used, and stained. We

want to put in something that is not carpet. Other changes will include installation of a wheelchair accessible ramp from the rear of the building and a projector screen at the front of day center to improve

classes and meetings. Family Promise will also be participating in the annual Beach, Bacon and Brewfest on July 16—they came in 2nd last year—and Connett said she has high hopes for this year.

“We are still looking for a few volunteers to sign up to help out, she said. Family Promise is located in the Taft District of Lincoln City, just south of Ace Hardware.

Robertson named new urban renewal director Lincoln City Urban Renewal Agency’s new Director, Alison Robertson, is a great example that volunteer work can still pay. “I had come up to Lincoln City to volunteer for the Nelscott visioning process,â€? she said. “The job for Assistant Director came open after I NEWS GUARD PHOTO/ GRETCHEN AMMERMAN left, but I heard ALISON ROBERTSON about it and applied.â€? almost a decade ago, continuing funding for the agency has seemed tenuous, but a new bond will insure at least some job security. “In 2017, we will be receiving our last bond for 3 million dollars, she said. “We have until 2024 to pay it back, but we are still going to be looking to wrap up some projects and not taking on new ones. Looking forward, Roberson says that economic development is going to be an important focus for the agency. “There are lots of different avenues to work on, she said “Pretty much everything Urban Renewal, the VCB, and the Planning Department does is economic development already, but we don’t have a plan or a strategy. The Planning Department, which is starting the process of updating it’s comprehensive plan, has just kicked off the Economic Opportunities Analysis, the Building Lands Inventory, and the Housing Needs Assessment, and those three things are probably going to be done late this year or early next year and will form the foundation of creating an economic development plan and strategy for the City. Basically we are looking at ways to coordinate our efforts and therefore be more efficient.
