Siletz Play Music! Siletz Bay Music Festival begins

T

he Siletz Bay Music Festival on the beautiful Central Oregon Coast begins on June 25 and ends July 6. In its third summer the Festival will again host music performances under the direction of Yaacov Bergman, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Festival.

Yaacov Bergman is also Music Director of the Walla Walla Symphony, Music Director of the Portland Chamber Orchestra, and former Music Director of the Colorado Springs Symphony, the New York Heritage Chamber Orchestra, and the 92nd St. Y Symphonic Workshop Orchestra in New York City. He has conducted in Osaka and Kobe, Japan; Vienna, Austria; Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Buffalo, San Diego, West Virginia Maestro Bergman has created engaging and diverse programming that is designed to excite and educate as well as entertain audiences of all ages and musical tastes. This year the number of concerts has grown to 11 distinctive programs, including a July 4 concert exploring gems of American musical genres. geared for children called “The Noisy Intermission.” The roster of world class guest performers that Maestro Bergman has assembled comes from across the United States and includes such notables as jazz piano legend and composer Dick Hyman; vocalists Rocky Blumhagen, Ron Spivak, and Nicole Greenidge Joseph; pianists Mei-Ting Sun, Lorna Griffitt and Gerald Robbins; as well as violinists Aaron Meyer, Haroutune Bedelian, and Tim Fain. Festival favorites Aaron Meyer and Tim Ellis will shine on the Festival’s Fourth of July float in the Gleneden parade, as well as in multiple concerts Included in the festival this year are a potpourri of musical genres including classical, jazz, musical theater, gospel, and rock. Classical concerts will include Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky, Dvorak, Bach, Strauss, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and Mozart. Eden Hall will be the location for the June 29 “Musical Tapas,” an intimate and engaging concert that includes hors d’oeuvres by Side Door Café and chamber works by Guion, Bottesini, O’Connor, Albeniz, Marais, Britten and Rachmaninoff. A special Fourth of July concert following the Gleneden parade will focus on American music – not the usual fare, though. The program includes Forest Pierce’s gorgeous tribute to the Columbia River, “Deep Sea Meeting,” Dick Hyman’s first public performance of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Gospel tunes from Nicole Greenidge Joseph, and a rousing finale from Aaron Meyer and Tim Ellis. Featured musicians include Mei-Ting Sun, and Gerald Robbins. The Festival grand finale is an Artist Showcase/ Fundraiser Concert at Salishan. Dave Sleeman is looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. Sleeman owns the Dory Cove Restaurant at 2981 S.W. Highway 101. The restaurant has been in the center of the Nelscott Gap Improvement Project for the past several months. ”My sales have been cut almost 30 percent,” he said. “In April I laid off a couple of employees.
