Kernville Steakhouse to reopen June 27 JIM FOSSUM Jfossum@countrymedia.net

It’s famous for its setting. The motion picture “Sometimes a Great Notion” was filmed in the surrounding area. Henry Fonda, Paul Newman and Lee Remick starred in the 1971 drama based on Ken Kesey’s second novel, published in 1964. Michael Thompson is hoping he has a great notion, too. Locals and tourists will tell you it’s a wonderful one. Thompson is bringing back the Kernville Steak & Seafood House, whose surroundings played a undeniable backdrop for the movie, based on former local resident Kesey’s second novel, considered by many to be the counterculture figure’s magnum opus, though not as popular as “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” his first. Friends and frequenters of the fabled restaurant, which has been closed for several years now, are rejoicing in news of its reopening. The same fare and pricing is expected at the establishment’s reopening,

to sports fans with a bar-style menu and a TV from every view. The upstairs dining room, with its exquisite view of the Siletz River, will feature fancy cuisine that might top out in the $35 range with pastas and salads in the mid-teens. “We’ll have two very distinct clients, downstairs for the beer and games and upstairs for the wines with classical music and stuff,” said Thompson, speaking in generalities. News of the reopening is spreading by word of mouth, and customers couldn’t be more elated. Thompson tells of one couple that heard of the reopening through the grapevine and drove miles to confirm it was true. They’ve booked their 57th wedding anniversary there, just like the old times, for their special occasion. Thompson has brought in longtime local chef Matthew Nesel to be executive chef and oversee the kitchen. Nesel, who most recently has been chef at the Inn at Spanish Head but also worked at the Bay
