City attacks potholes JEREMY C. RUARK jruark@countrymedia.net
If you are one of the many who call the City to complain about potholes in your neighborhood, you are
not alone. “We get plenty of calls from concerned citizens,” Lincoln City Public Works Director Lila Bradley said. Over the past few weeks, the City’s public works
crews have been tending to their spring ritual of filling as many of the potholes as they can. “We usually fill about See POTHOLES, Page A9

The Devils Lake Water Improvement District (DLWID) Board of Directors will hold a public work session from 10 a.m, to noon Saturday, April 19, at Oregon Coast Community College, 3788 S.E. High School Drive in Lincoln City, to discuss short and long-term options to restoring the health of Devils Lake. Heightened public concern has caused the district to initiate the beginning of its water quality monitoring following the change seen at the lake over the last week, according to DLWID Lake Manager Paul Robertson. The water monitoring is usually done between Memorial Day and Labor Day. “Samples have been sent to the lab for toxin monitoring and identification which we expect back shortly and will forward on when we can,” he said in a posting on the DLWID website. “The bloom in parts of the lake has diminished significantly. Water clarity was 240 percent better Monday morning in the southern half of the lake as compared to Friday. In fact, See LAKE, Page A6

A revised housing development is under review at Lincoln City Hall for this site off Logan Road at Roads End.
Developers of a planned multimillion dollar housing project proposed for Logan Road in Roads End have submitted a revised plan for City review. The revisions follow a Dec. 18 public meeting with surrounding neighbors who outlined concerns about increased traffic, loss of natural views and the ability of developers to finish the project and generate home and apartment sales. The proposed Logan Park would include a natural area with trails and lookouts surrounded by single-family homes, row houses and flats, and a center green space as an anchor. The site has been untouched since an 11acre clearcut in 2011. The basic development plan is the same, with numerous minor adjust-
ments, according to Rich Catlin, senior planner with Reece and Associates, a civil engineering and land-use planning company based in Albany working with the property owner. “There would be three acres of open space in the middle surrounded by homes that would face inward toward the open space,” he said. “It’s a blend of single family detached and attached homes marketed toward retirees and first-time home buyers, and fourplexes along Logan Road available for rent as workforce housing.” Catlin said his group spent a great deal of time working out details of house locations, lot dimensions, parking, pathways, and street grades and the regulating plan that defines building type, placement and construction materials to ensure continuity of style See PARK, Page A9
Depoe Bay firefighters mount smoke detector outreach JEREMY C. RUARK jruark@countrymedia.net
A trailer fire in Seal Rock claimed a mother and her two small children on Feb. 28. Depoe Bay firefighters concerned about the tragedy are going door to door to make sure such a loss of life doesn’t happen in their community. “We are going around the community to make sure people have adequate smoke detectors installed in their homes,” Depoe Bay Fire District Lt. Dave Champion said. “We are giving smoke detectors to anyone who doesn’t have one in their home.” Champion said the detectors are free and the firefighters will install them. The Depoe Bay Fire District
has used a grant to purchase dozens of detectors. “We gave out 18 of the detectors at one trailer park alone,” Lt. Patrick Ganz said. “It is alarming that we have all these RV’s and trailers in our district that don’t have smoke alarms.” Ganz said the RV’s and trailers are at a higher fire risk than most homes. “Many times, these RV’s and trailers are located next to other trailers or homes, so when one See DETECTORS, Page A9
