Long run to raise funds GRETCHEN AMMERMAN gammerman@countrymedia.net

He’s going to lose some toenails. He was stopped a few times by the police. Sometimes the daytime temperatures were so hot he had to run alone in the middle of the night. And no one made Jason Zacher do any of it. “That man is amazing, said Patricia Robertson, one of the founders of the Lincoln City Backpack Program, the charity that Zacher ran almost 370 miles to raise money for. “Crazy, but amazing. Zacher set out from the Santa Monica pier in California on Oct. 15 for his “Epic Adventure 2, and ended almost a week later in Monterey, bloodied but unbowed. “I loved parts of it and I hated parts of it, he said. “It’s so dry there and there is so much litter; it made me feel so grateful for what we have here in Oregon. Though the planned route had him staying on highways as much as possible (you cannot legally run on freeways), the maps were not always accurate, hence, the few run-ins with the police. “When I got stopped I would explain what I was doing, Zacher said. “They were always so nice and would take the time to help get me back on the right track. Another forced detour caused one of the best parts of the trip. “I ended up going into a really neat little town called San Miguel that I probably would never have seen otherwise, he said. “My photos from that detour are some of my favorites of the trip. Priceless help was provided along the route by friends Andy and Beth Morgan. “They were so nice to come, Zacher said. “My original crew had to pull out at the last minute so they stepped in and I am immensely grateful for that. Because the Morgans couldn’t stay until the very end, Zacher ended up alone for about the last eight hours of the run. “It was actually kind of nice not to have that pressure at the end, he said. “All the other charity runs I’ve done, people were waiting for me so I felt like I had to push it; after that many days it was nice not to have to do that. Though the run is over, the fundraising isn’t; you still can support Zacher’s efforts to reach his goal of raising at least $10,000. On Nov. 15, Gallucci’s is hosting a 50/50 night where the items donated by the community will be raffled off. The grand prize is “The Taste of Lincoln City, a pack of gift certificates to 30 different restaurants in town. There is also a weekend stay at a house in Sunriver, a beautiful large bowl blown by Kelly Howard, a $50 gift certificate for Amazon.com, and more. Tickets are $5 each.

Growth in the scouts THE NEWS GUARD

In the year he has been associated with it, committee member Jack Seagrove has seen Lincoln City’s Boy Scout Troop 47 grow. “This has allowed the Scouts greater opportunities in camping, learning and giving, Seagrove said. “These experiences broaden their world view and are helping to shape them into the men they will become. It’s always a positive thing to participate in giving. The Troop is allowing more opportunities for these boys to grow and gain a greater understanding of the community and their world. It is in this spirit of giving that the troop will participate in a nation-wide food drive, Scouting For Food on Nov.

Two Lincoln City police officers were awarded the Oregon Peace Officers Association’s (OPOA) Life Saving Award for their quick thinking and bravery during a medical emergency. Senior Officer Bobby Bomar and Officer Jason Spano were given this recognition during the OPOA’s annual awards banquet on Friday. On Aug. 8, Officers Spano and Bomar were dispatched to a medical emergency in Lincoln City, said Lt. Jerry Palmer. “They responded within minutes and found an adult victim unconscious and foaming at the mouth, not breathing, he said. Acting quickly Bomar started CPR while Spano retrieved an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) from his patrol vehicle. While Bomar continued chest compressions, Spano made the connections to the AED. The AED soon indicated a shock was necessary and the machine was activated and shock applied. Bomar then continued chest compressions for another one and a half minutes. The patient gasped for air and the AED indicated a pulse had returned. The officers provided monitoring and follow up care, while continuing to wait for an ambulance. The nearest ambulance was responding from the Depoe Bay area. “Knowing there was a large time delay for medical treatment Spano and Bomar jumped into action as they have been trained and brought the victim back from the brink of
