The official start to the holidays Standing for support

FOR THE NEWS GUARD

The Lincoln City Cultural Center is upping the holiday spirit for the whole town by hosting and decorating the 20-foot noble fir tree provided by Noble Creek Tree Farm, felled by Capt. Jim Kusz of the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District and transported by Lincoln City Towing. Once at the center, the 20-foot Noble Fir tree was installed by local crews from Pacific Power and decorated by Chessman Gallery director Krista Eddy and a crew of LCCC volunteer elves. It will first be illuminated at sunset on Friday and, weather willing, it will shine through the month of December. This year, the LCCC’s community holiday display is being “greened with renewable energy by the Pacific Power Blue Sky program. The utility has pledged to acquire renewable energy certificates equal to the amount of power required for the five-week lighting display. As soon as the tree is lighted, Santa will arrive by fire truck, and listen to wishes from little ones until 7 p.m. Cocoa and sweet treats will be provided to help warm up the evening event. For more information and a full schedule of the two-day event, visit lincolncity-culturalcenter.org, or call 541-994-9994.

Local student acquires standing wheelchair CASSIE RUUD cruud@countrymedia.net

Daxton Elwell, Taft senior, has upgraded his wheels. On Oct. 4, Elwell, who has cerebral palsy, was able to acquire a standing wheelchair, which allows him to expand the scope of his independence and skills. Elwell said he likes his new wheelchair. “It’s nice, he said. “Hopefully—more people will talk to me. I don’t know what I want to do after high school—maybe get a job. I like the Ashley Inn. “He’s a chick magnet, Elwell’s mother Jennifer said, smiling. Jennifer said that since moving to the standing chair she has already noticed benefits. “He has less pain in his back and the cramps in his legs have gone away, she said. “More of his muscles are being used and he has more self confidence. He now helps me grocery shop, cook and clean. Elwell recently attended a Mixed Martial Arts event at Chinook Winds Casino and had a first-time experience.

Krista Eddy gets help from LCCC elf Donna Eddy to decorate the 20-foot noble fir in time for the tree lighting ceremony on Friday.
