Transition is taking place at Columbia River Fire & Rescue. Since early May, the fire district has been without a fire chief following the resignation of Dennis Hoke. This week, the CRFR Board of Directors is expected to name an interim chief and launch a recruiting process for a new chief. CRFR Board President Hans Feige and CRFR public information officer Jennifer Motherway told The Chronicle that the search process will be managed by an outside organization which will recruit for CRFR. “The process to fill the full time role should start in July and we hope to complete that by the end of the year,” Feige and Motherway said. “The interim chief will likely be one of our current District Chiefs, but the Board is still discussing that.” Chief position

You may have seen the long line of motorcycle riders cruising through St. Helens Monday afternoon, June 22. They are members of the Patriot Guard Riders in town to honor resident Martin Scheer, a 94-year old World War II Naval veteran on his birthday. They honored the veteran by traveling down 18th Street past Scheer’s house with a convoy parade. The Patriot Guard Riders are veterans, or family members of veterans, who said they are honored to pay tribute to Scheer and other veterans. See more information about the group at www.patriotguard.org.

The Oregon Legislature is set to meet in a special session beginning Wednesday, June 24, to review statewide police reform. The special session has been ordered by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown. “The public’s call for significant police reform is too urgent to wait until the next regular legislative session,” Brown said. “It’s imperative that the legislature take action on these issues right away.” There have been reports that the legislators will be asked to outlaw the use of police choke holds and tear gas by police. State Rep. Brad Witt said there are three areas of reform that will likely be discussed during the special session. Witt said the legislation may include provisions that would reduce the ability of an arbitrator

Bells to ring on Independence Day JEREMY C. RUARK jruark@countrymedia.net

St. Helens 6th annual ‘Let Freedom Bells Ring’ celebration is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Each year since it began, the Independence Day celebration has members of the American Legion Post 0042 ringing several large bells throughout the community to mark America’s independence and freedoms. Organizer Judy Thompson said about 12 legion members ring the bells each Fourth of July. This year, the Boy Scout Troop 106 members have been invited to assist the bell ringers. ‘Let Freedom Bells Ring’ are to honor those who protect our freedom, including veterans, service members, law enforcement, and firefighters,” Thompson said. “Recognizing freedom is not free.” Due to the state’s social distancing requirements, one person and one big bell will synchronized to ring the bells at 2 p.m. at different locations in the community. The big bells scheduled to be

“It gives you a moment to consciously reflect on our freedom. Our freedom is not free.” ~ Judy Thompson, organizer a proclamation in 1963 to bring back National Bell Ringing at 2 p.m., the time the Declaration of Independence was signed and bells were rung 13 times for each of the American Colonies. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing limitations, the traditional fireworks displays in St. Helens and other cities have been canceled. To offer other

activities to celebrate Independence Day and to follow the state’s practicing social distancing requirements, St. Helens Economic Development Corporation (SHEDCO) and collaborating local partners are planning several events on Independence Day. Those events including, a Patriotic Car Decorating Contest, Merchant Window Decorating Contest, and The Columbia County Historical Society and Museum Association will be offering virtual tours of the historical downtown district via museum’s Facebook page. The QR code for a self-guided tour is available on most smart phones. Thompson said participating local merchants will set the tone for Independence Day with a Decorated Window Display Contest. A $250 cash prize for best display will be presented by SHEDCO. At 1:45 p.m. on July 4 at the old Courthouse steps, words of reflection will be spoken and the singing of The National Anthem will be conducted
