Our Time

As the sun comes out, the temperature goes up and Spring hits the Oregon Coast, it’s time to get outside.
Walks, bike rides, tennis, golf, gardening – whatever it is you enjoy doing outdoors, this is one of the best times of year to do it.
Those outdoor activities help older adults stay in shape, and often are a great way to see old friends and make new ones.
But getting out and being active also has the benefit of helping seniors reduce falls. Falling represents one of the biggest health risks to older adults, but getting out and being active helps build muscle mass and improve
balance, two significant ways of mitigating fall risk.
The old saying is true: use it or lose it! The more you or a loved one can get out with ability-appropriate activities, the better the chance of reducing a fall and preventing injuries.
To learn more about how seniors can reduce fall risk, join Prestige Senior Living Five Rivers on Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. for a free webinar hosted by Adrian Cagigas, a certified athletic trainer and expert on fitness for older adults. He will offer expertise on the physical factors that can lead to falls,
fitness routines for older adults to help build strength, and advice on fall-proofing the home.
To sign up for the free webinar, visit prestigecanhelp.com.
At Five Rivers, fall prevention is at the heart of what we do.
We offer comprehensive fitness programming designed to help our residents build and maintain strength, along with fall reduction classes.
Our apartments also include a number of vital safety measures, including walk-in showers, grab bars, non-slip mats and emergency call buttons.

Did you know that falls are a leading cause of hip fractures, traumatic brain injuries and death in seniors? While falls are one of the most pressing health concerns for older adults, there are many ways to reduce your risk.
Join us on Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. Pacific Time for a free fall risk webinar hosted by certified athletic trainer Adrian Cagigas, who will discuss physical factors that can lead to falls, fitness routines older adults can use to help build strength, and advice on fall-proofing the home.
When Kristy Lombard heard that the “old bank” building in downtown Tillamook was available to rent, she decided to relocate her pottery studio and shop two blocks west.
“That building opened up and not a lot of things come available in downtown very often,” Lombard told the Headlight Herald.
Her new location, isn’t new to Tillamook at all. In fact the building, which still has “bank” etched to the front, is one of the oldest still standing commercial buildings in downtown. Erected in 1895, the building is made from sandstone and has house various businesses in its lifetime.
“It’s nice that it’s a standalone building,” Lombard said. “It’s in a great spot and I love the big windows.”
Lombard has been a staple to the downtown art scene for many years, charming shoppers with her unique pottery. Instead of using a wheel, Lombard uses a slab roller for each section that makes up her pottery pieces. She then adds patterns and textures, from rollers that she carves herself, with themes from nature. Lombard finishes the whole process off by
hand-glazing each piece.
“People can see everything being made right there in-house,”
Lombard said. “I feel like I’m moving into the ‘makers district.’ There’s Pelican Brewing and de Garde Brewing; they literally make the beer right there. Same for the
food carts. They do food, but it’s basically what I do too: I make my products and you can buy stuff right there.”
Currently, Lombard is working on a new line of a face planters for spring.
“I never have a shortage of ideas, but
a shortage of time,” Lombard chuckled. “I’m excited to have stairs [at the new building] to put some planters on.”
In addition to her own work, Lombard will also be carrying a few other artists’ pieces including some pottery, jewelry, bags, and various gifts for guests to choose from.
Kristy Lombard Pottery will reopen at the new
location March 15 at the corner of 1st Street and Stillwell Avenue. Business hours are WednesdayFriday, noon-5 p.m., and
Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Follow Kristy Lombard Pottery on Facebook for updates and previews of her new pottery pieces.
While shopping at Likely Finds Antique Boutique in downtown Tillamook, nostalgia is always free.
“People come in to just stroll down memory lane,” owner Christine Coiteux said. “People come in and say that they’re mom collected this or their grandmother had that. And when they bring their kids come in, I love to see their faces when they see the old toys.”
Coiteux has been collecting treasures since she was a young girl.
“I’ve been buying since I was 12 years old,” Coiteux said. “I starting buying with my grandparents. I just paid attention. My dad and his wife also bought and sold at estate sales; I started doing them too.”
After retiring as an accountant, she decided to open a space to share her finds with other treasure seekers.
“Every time I came to [Tillamook] to visit my friends, there wasn’t anything like this around, and the price was right for the space,” Coiteux said.
In the past she had her goods for sale in various antique malls around Oregon including Simply Charming in Rockaway Beach, but decided it was time to have everything in one spot.
Coiteux opened Likely Finds Antique Boutique on 4th Street in Tillamook in January
2022 before relocating to her current location at 113 Main Ave. Her new location opened January 2023 and she describes it as “light and airy” with everything in one central space.
At the boutique, shoppers can find antiques, vintage jewelry, hats, purses, custom furniture, light fixtures, and more.
“I have a little bit of everything, but my number one seller are tiaras from Italy,” Coiteux said.
Coiteux says she began sourcing tiaras when she used to do an annual princess day with her granddaughters. She eventually found an Italian wholesaler and has sold them to customers ever since.
Coiteux also says that shoppers enjoy trying on the old hats, some of which were her grandmother’s when she was a milliner (hatmaker).
Likely Finds Antique
Boutique also features three vendors’ products in the shop including Persnickety Paulette silverware jewelry; Shaggy Dog Bakery
pet treats; and Wild Brambles jams, soaps, cleansing bars, and skin products.
And what if your shopping buddy is
taking too long?
“I have a rocking chair set aside for husbands that get tired of waiting for their wives,” Coiteux chuckled.

Last year Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce awarded West Elliott Boutique “Small Business of the Year.” And this year, their business is housed inside Terry Phillips’ awarding winning “Development Project of the Year” building. West Elliott Boutique owner, Kimberly
Martin Travis, said that her daughter Natalie Travis of Natalie Kate Images, was looking for a new space to do indoor photography. She noticed Phillips renovating the Koch’s Drugstore building in downtown Tillamook.
“She said, ‘Mom, we have to go look at it,” Kimberly recalls. “When we looked at it, it was so raw, but it just became perfect with the light from the afternoon sun and the skylights. It was set back from the sidewalk and was going to be so much better for photography than our last space.”

By November 2022, West Elliott Boutique and Natalie Kate Images had relocated to the new space.
“Our businesses has doubled, maybe tripled since we moved,”
Kimberly said amazed.
West Elliott Boutique is a boho-themed store specializing in affordable women and baby clothing and accessory items. Kimberly spends hours sourcing just the right items for the shop.
“Affordability is key,” Kimberly said. “I’ve seen so many shops come and go because they can’t stay in business because their
[products] are too expensive. Nothing in our shop is currently over $56 and there are lots of items for $1520.”
Kimberly says that women’s tops and sweaters are the store’s top selling items and inventory is always changing with the season’s styles.
“We have a steady stream of new and returning customers,” said Kimberly.
In addition to boutique clothing items, West Elliott Boutique also carries locally made products including: Iron Threads jewelry and aromatherapy products; Love & Lather all-
natural bath products; and Branded 56 Apothecary candles.
West Elliott Boutique is located at 209 Main Avenue, Tillamook. Business hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., with expanded days and hours coming soon. Private shopping experiences are also offered upon request.
West Elliott Boutique also participates in the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce’s Sip+Shop events.

North Lincoln County Historical Museum
Special Exhibit through 2023: Sears Years
Sears, Roebuck & Company and Montgomery Ward made rural living in North Lincoln County a lot easier around the turn of the 20th century. Having poor access to stores in the valley and being fairly isolated from other coastal communities, we relied on catalog ordering and the brave supply boat captains that would cross the Siletz River bar.
In this exhibit you will
find artifacts from the museum’s collection that closely match entries from Sears, Roebuck & Company catalogs from the late 1800s to the 1930s. You will also find quotes from North Lincoln County residents via oral histories and diary accounts on ordering from Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs. Swipe through our iPad kiosk station’s slideshow to view selected pages from a 1902 Sears, Roebuck & Company catalog.

S pecial Traveling Exhibit through February 2024: Float Odyssey
Odysseys are described as long and adventurous journeys. We couldn’t think of a better word to describe the epic voyages that the fishing floats in this exhibit have endured! After being used and lost at sea by fishermen, these floats were caught in the circular Pacific currents for decades until large storms forced them ashore. This exhibit follows some of our more extraordinary float odysseys, highlighting their place of origin, their use in the fishing industry, where and when they were found, and how they wound up in our collection. Learn all about glass fishing floats through the stories of the special floats selected for this exhibit.

New project: Director Wortman has acquired a 1924 Ford Model T Touring car which he hopes to restore in time for the 4th of July parade in 2023. The Ford touring was instrumental in the mechanization of many early police departments as it was relatively inexpensive, reliable and had easily interchangeable parts. The 1924 T will require extensive work before it can be displayed .

Blocked Out: Race and Place in the Making of Modern Astoria seeks to complicate the common belief that Astoria is a predominantly white town simply because it has always been so. In reality, Astoria at its founding was a multiracial and multi-ethnic space. It is only through
deliberate efforts on the local, state, and federal levels that Astoria is the overwhelmingly white community of today. This exhibit explores the topic in two sections. The first consists of three kiosks that greet visitors when they first enter the gallery that discuss the history of race and attempts at community formation in Astoria. The second, on the main wall, attempts to map physical locations throughout the city where explicit discrimination took place and became codified. Importantly, this map is a work in progress and is currently incomplete. This exhibit made possible by contributions from James and Janet Aalberg, and the Oregon Black Pioneers.
The market features up to 200 vendors each week offering locally-made products that have been handcrafted, grown, created or gathered by the farmers, craftspeople and artisans featured each week. In addition, the Market has a lively food court with regional entertainment making this the gathering place each Sunday for locals and visitors to the region.

A Veteran of the Cold War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War, this bomber served America with pride for over 30 years! Our special guest for the event is Sherry Lowe. In 1964, Sherry was bestowed the title of “Miss Bangor” (Maine). As a part of her crown, Sherry was tasked with Christening a B-52 Stratofortress at Dow Air Force Base in Maine, the “City of Bangor.”
Coincidentally, this is the same B-52 that the Museum has been working hard to restore this past year. Now 59 years later, Sherry is joining us at the Museum to “re-Christen” her airplane, “Osiris” (the name given the aircraft during the Gulf War era). Come on out and
join in on the fun, climb through our B-52 Stratofortress cockpit, get your picture taken inside, and talk to Veterans who served aboard this magnificent aircraft! For more information on this event, contact the Museum at 503-8421130 or email us at Info@ Tillamookair.com
