s a child, Alesia Franken grew up in the desert. “I would run for miles and would pluck small plants,” Franken said. “I have always had this outdoor interest and loved being in nature.” Twenty years ago, Franken began her herbalist journey. Upon moving to the Northwest, Franken found herself emersed in an environment of greenery. “I wanted to know what everything was,” Franken said. “So, I started seeking how to learn more.” Her first herbal guide was beloved American herbalist, educator, and environmental activist Cascade Anderson Geller who Franken said she was blessed to learn from. While Franken continued her career working in high tech, she kept her knowledge of herbs alive and even maintained her own apothecary. In 2019, Franken was looking for a change. “It had been a tough year and I decided to step out of my high tech career and start a business online,” Franken said. “I started having fun with my formulas and bitters.” Soon, Franken was looking for a space to create and sell her products.

“We had been coming out to the North Coast for 30 years and were building a cabin nearby,” Franken said. “I decided that instead of waiting 10 years for retirement to move out here, why not make the change now.” Franken found a space in Nehalem that she transformed into her little shop and opened

to be,” she said. Doju Moon (named for her and her daughter Lauren’s favorite song together: “Drops of Jupiter,” and Moon for the divine feminine) sells all natural, organic herbal products. Franken, along with Lauren, stock the shop with bitters, balms, salves, creams, body scents, extracts, and bulk herbs. Some products are even crafted using herbs that Franken cultivates herself or finds through wild harvesting. `When customers walk through the door, they’ll be offered the chance to sample products. “Try a flight of bitters,” Franken said. “I walk through each one and describe what’s in it. Bitters have been used for one hundred years and they really help with your digestion. I also have other herbs that add to a lovely flavor profile. A lot of people are familiar with having [bitters] in cocktails or mocktails, but you can also have them with soda water or flat water.” Along with Doju Moon original creations, the store also carries local artisan crafts. “My dear mother, who is 81, calls it her therapy to sew and make things for the shop,” Franken said. Since the opening of the shop, Franken says locals have shown great support to Doju Moon.

Doju Moon, located in downtown Nehalem, stocks bitters, balms, salves, creams, body scents, extracts, and bulk herbs. “I have a lot of returning customers and they have become friends,” Franken said. “They have comments like, ‘We’re so happy that you’re here,’ and that’s heart-warming. And I love Nehalem; it’s lovely and just very down-toearth.”
