Baker High School 100th Commencement “The hardest years, the worst years, the desperate and dividing years, these should not be forgotten years.” Thirty-four seniors entered the Longfellow Gymnasium to “Pomp and Circumstance” performed by the Baker Symphonic Band under the direction of Jill Whiteman. Superintendent Don Schillinger welcomed family and friends to the 100th Baker High School Commencement. A class video was shown before salutatorians Lauren Wang and Braylea Wyrick, and valedictorians Solenn Jacobsen, Karlee Murnion, and Jase Rost presented their addresses. Jay Shumaker, math teacher for Baker High School, gave the
2015 commencement address. Mr. Shumaker has been with the Baker School system for the past 13 years. Diplomas were presented by Johnna Koenig, School Board Trustee. Don Schillinger and David Breitbach presented the seniors with their awards. Schillinger then introduced the top ten scholars: Jase Rost, Solenn Jacobsen, Karlee Murnion, Braylea Wyrick, Lauren Wang, Brady Varner, Jerilyn Wiseman, Brianna Rambur, Stephanie Heaps, and Tyla Herbst. Randash building demolished By Lori Kesinger The historic but long-closed Randash building in downtown Baker was completely demolished last week. The history of the building began when George Randash, Bill Randash’s dad, started Randash Motors in the Super Valu building, formerly known as Hubbard Hall, in 1945. George built a new garage next to the Super Valu building in 1952 and took his brother, Ed, as a partner.

Many factors hindered production in the car industry, so George and Ed received only two new cars to sell until eventually their showroom became full. In 1961, Bill bought Ed out and operated the garage until 1994. Bill’s son, Dennis, took over the business until 2004. Following his departure, Ed moved to Great Falls and operated two NAPA stores.

By Lori Kesinger When the final bell rings at Baker High School this year, it will mark a milestone for Ed Jones. After more than four decades of teaching science, he will officially end his career. Jones has been one of the leading science teachers at Baker schools for the past 37 years. He spent the first 16 years of teaching science to seventh and eighth grades, and the last 21 years to eighth and ninth, plus high school physics. Originally from Butte, Jones didn’t decide to become a teacher until he attended college at the University of Montana in Missoula. Prior to Baker, he taught in Colstrip and Miles City. In addition to his work in the classroom, Jones was an athletic coach. He served numerous years as the junior high football coach and was involved with junior high and high school wrestling. Besides coaching, Jones has also been involved with Academic Olympics for the past ten years. “A lot of good memories,” Jones said. “Especially seeing the students do well at something, whether sports or academics.” Through the years, Jones kept in mind Einstein’s words, “A person who never made a mistake never tried something new”. Jones taught many students whose parents also had a class with him when they were in school. Many of those former students may remember the science fairs. Technology has been one of the greatest changes Jones has seen in his years of teaching, from overhead projectors and chalkboards to Smart Boards, and encyclopedias to internet search engines. Jones said there will be some things he will miss once retired such as the daily routine, staff and students. He plans to continue with his summer position

10 YEARS AGO Friday, June 3, 2005 -- Five long-time members of the Baker School personnel retired at the end of the 2005 school year. They are Ella Arnell, Gail Kramlick, Bob Curry, Jim Schillinger and Gigi Nance. . . Sixth annual Car Show is set for June 4 at the Fallon Medical Complex parking lot. . . A two vehicle crash in Plevna at the intersection of Main and Highway 12 May 25 resulted in a rollover and two totaled vehicles. Leslie Bohle, who had four children as passengers in her vehicle, collided with Tyler Medearis. No one was seriously injured. . . Open positions in the City of Baker up for election this fall will be Mayor currently held by Clayton Hornung; alderman #1 currently held by JoDee Pratt; and alderman #2 currently held by Rod Morris. Positions open in the City of Plevna are for mayor - held currently by Gary Thielen, and alderman positions currently held by Larry Dahl and William Miller. . . Quality Transportation, Inc. was presented a gold award by Great West Casualty Company as part of the 2004 National Fleet Safety Awards Program. During the year 2004, Quality’s owner operators ran a total of 7,677,754 miles with just two at fault reportable accidents. 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 2, 1995 -For the second time in 78 years the little white schoolhouse beside the road, Fertile Prairie School, has been silenced. Lack of students has necessitated the closing of the school, which was the last operating rural school in Fallon County. . . Wayne and Sharon Myers will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary June 10. . . . Tavern owners Tom and Pam Owens sponsored an invitational pool tournament May 7. Winners were: 1st - Johnny Henson of Baker, 2nd - Lyle Bennett of Miles City, 3rd Ernie Nelson of Miles City, and 4th - Jeff Mann of Baker. . . Reynolds Supermarket June Employee of the Month is Jan Schell. . . Beth Obrigewitsch was the winner of a Shell Oil Scholarship. She is the first student from the Baker area to receive this scholarship and was awarded $4,000 per year for four years. She is the daughter of Mike and Georgiana Obrigewitsch.
30 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 30, 1985 -Bryon Wiman, a sixth grade student at Longfellow School in Baker, was awarded first place in the state in the special services division of the Keep Montana Green, poster contest. Bryon was awarded a plaque and a check for $25. . . Alice Newell and Leon Newell were honored recently by the Baker Fire Dept. when they received plaques depicting over 51 years of volunteer fire fighting by the
Newell family. . . Sororities of Beta Sigma Phi have chosen Sandy Kinsey as their “Lady of the Year”. . . Lee and Gerry Stevenson will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary June 9. . Amanda Marie Ketterling of Baker and Chad Evan Hockenbary of Ekalaka are the winners of the Mother’s Day layettes that have been on display in Eilek’s window.
40 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 29, 1975 -Steve Duneman scored all of Baker’s nine points in the divisional track meet held in Glendive this past weekend. Duneman won the discus throw, and placed third in the high jump to qualify for the state track meet. . . Picture: Forst Eichhorn, as a young eight year old cowboy, is seen riding a bull for the Little Britches Rodeo and hopes for more action this year. . . Baker girls track team qualified eight girls for the state meet while finishing fourth in the conference at Glendive. Those going to state are Shelly McGhee, Carla Engesser, Kathy Crippen, Carmen McCamish, Patty Lutz, and the medley relay team consisting of Karen Losing, Pam Novak, Cindy Brown, and Carmen McCamish. . . Baker Chamber of Commerce is keeping with the bicentennial theme and will be sponsoring a fire plug painting contest this summer. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 27, 1965-Commencement ceremonies were held May 26 for ten seniors graduating from Plevna High School. Edith Wenz gave the valedictory address, and Kathleen Rugg delivered the salutatory address. . . Leo V. Steffes, former Fallon county resident and sheriff from 195458, was buried in Missoula. He died as a result of a car accident May 14. . . Pictured are five men who have been members of Sandstone Lodge AF & AM for the past 50 years. They are E.L. Baker, L.M. According to the physician caring for Mr. Crawford, his recovery is practically assured. . . An open house was held at the Farmers Elevator Company to mark completion of their new storage facilities to 80,000 bushels and gives them new office facilities.
Manager Roy McClain says the new structure is 110 feet high. . . Recently Gene Hoff with a crew of high school boys and others planted over 300 trees at the Sportsman Dam on the Fred Westrope property. . . A bridal shower was held in honor of Miss Virginia Brayton, who will marry Russell Culver June 5.

Dear Editor, I find it very disappointing that a school system as well off as ours could not figure out how to install a sound system that could be heard at graduation. We never heard the kids give their speeches nor did we hear the commencement speech. Throughout the years I have been to many graduations in this county and found this was the most disappointing one and a very important one for my family. Also I’m not sure why our high school students graduate at the grade school and not the high school. Not only is there way less room at the middle school, but the traffic pattern does not come close
to the traffic pattern at the high school. After the graduation, the crowd was unsure what to do. Previous years the kids went to the back and formed a line and you could congratulate all of them and exit off to the side without running into the incoming traffic. I think it is important for the school board and the administration to reconsider their options. Maybe the community needs to help the kids help the administration and school board make better choices for the graduation and other events that involve the whole community. Thank you. Watt of Geraldine, a registered pharmacist, has purchased the Baker Drug and has now taken charge. . . Baker businessmen, farmers and others who can find time for a “day off” will make a tour of the county visiting Plevna, Westmore, Ismay, Twin Buttes, Fitzsimmons School and Willard. A day of varied entertainment will be provided including a picture show “Call of the Wild”, and a free dance at Willard. . Editor and Mrs. James Kramer were Baker visitors over Sunday, coming up from Marmarth to attend the ball game.

Labor is scarce and farmers and ranchers are too short-handed to spend any time participating in a fair program. . . A crew of 16 men moved into Ismay Friday. Bump-N-Run Race set for next weekend
Clarence Schell Funeral services for Clarence Schell, 84, of Baker were held May 22, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church in Baker with Pastors Bruce and Reba Kolasch officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Plevna. Clarence passed away May 17, 2015, at his home in Baker. Clarence Schell was born to Jacob Schell and Louella (Ehret) Schell in Plevna, Nov. 11, 1930. He was the second of nine children: Vernon, Clarence, Lloyd, Lillian, Alice, Raymond, Florence, Mary Ann, and Larry. When he was very young, his family moved to a farm four miles northeast of Ismay. Clarence attended his first two years of school in Plevna. He could only speak German when he started school. He started school in Ismay in the third or fourth grade when Lloyd started school. A few years later the family moved into Ismay, buying a house just south of the Presbyterian Church. Clarence used to pump the big organ at the church for 25 cents a Sunday. Clarence’s next job was unloading carloads of cement one sack at a time for Midland Lumber. It was a really hard job, but he did it. Clarence graduated from Ismay High School in 1948 with five other seniors. After high school, he worked for Karl Hepperle as a mechanic helper and on the Drange Ranch as a ranch hand in 1948. He also did electrical and plumbing for Kenneth Cole in 1949-50 and during the time he worked at Hepperle’s and for Kenneth Cole. He went with Cliff Schell to a schoolhouse dance north of Plevna where he met Dolores Ann! In 1950 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1950 to 1954 as radar operator on the USS Harveson. After returning from the service, Clarence got a job at Bud’s Super Valu for Bud Bowen. He was staying at his Grandma Quenzer’s in Plevna and had a passenger to Baker every day. You guessed it - it was Dolores. She was working for the Fallon County Times. They had quite a courtship from 1949-1955 when he finally persuaded her to marry him. They had an early spring wedding on March 20, 1955. Life was great together. In 1958, after being worried they weren’t going to have children, Clarence and Dolores had their firstborn, Kenneth Jacob. In 1959 along came Julie Ann, Angela Rene followed in 1961. Their fourth child, Rick Allen, completed their family in 1963. That same year they bought a locker and meat processing plant and called it Schell Meat Service. In 1964 the family built a new home, pink house with white brick. In 1968 Reynolds Corporation approached Clarence on becoming their manager and around 1975 Clarence and Dolores bought the shopping center.
Clarence was the family go-getter and manager and created a family business in the Reynolds Grocery. He also made investments in real estate. He was a progressive man, and worked to build an impressive career. He was always friendly and accommodating to the public and tried to serve his customers in every way. He built up a small mall in Baker and contributed much to its economy. Dolores worked with him and was a real asset, doing the bookwork, billing and collecting. Clarence retired from Reynolds in 1996 after spending 41 years in the grocery and meat business. Clarence enjoyed gardening and working in the soil. He seemed to be able to get anything to grow beautifully. He was an avid collector of antique wagons, cars, machinery, and later eagles and clocks. Everything he did was for the benefit of his family. Clarence was involved with many organizations and served on: ALC Church Council, ALC Church treasurer, City Council, Cub Scout leader in 1965, American Legion since 1964, Baker National Bank Director in the 1980s, Montana Food Distributors Director in the 1980s, was named Grocery Man of the Year for Montana in 1986, Baker Chamber of Commerce President in 1974, Baker Volunteer Fire Department from 1968-1988, and Economic Development Group 1995. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Louella Schell; brothers Vernon and Raymond; a sister Lillian; and a wonderful grandson Lucas Meschke. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores Ann; children: Kenneth (Connie) Schell, Julie (Steve) Stanhope, Angie (Thomas) Rodriguez, and Rick (Keri) Schell, all of Baker; grandchildren: Chris (Trisha) Schell, Kim (Josh) Cuppy, Jacob (BreeAnn) Schell, Lauren (Josh) Celander, Lisa Stanhope, Alexis Stanhope, Reed Meschke, Whitney Meschke (Shane), Cole Meschke, Isaiah Schell, Alissa Schell, Ericka Schell, Jonah Schell; eight great-grandchildren, soon to be nine; brothers, Lloyd (Marge) Schell of Billings, Larry (Janice ) Schell of Baker; and sisters, Alice Turner and Florence Haga, both of Baker, and Mary Ann Lecoe of Marmarth, N.D. By Lori Kesinger Some of the most daring drivers around will soon be racing around a dirt track of turns and jumps while bumping other cars out of the way to get to the finish line first. The Tri-Area Racing Association (TARA) is getting ready to bring some of the best motor sports action in the region to Baker. TARA hosts the yearly Baker Bump-N-Run race sanctioned by the Montana Bump-N-Run Association. Due to a scheduling conflict with the Association, the race this year is being held at an earlier date rather than on Father’s Day. It will be Sunday, June 7, at the Baker Motor Sports Complex located two
miles west of Baker on Highway 12. Racing is set to start at noon with seating available in bleachers, or bring a lawn chair. Admission is $10 with ages seven and under admitted free. Concessions will be available. The Baker Bump-N-Run race is held Sunday every year in conjunction with the Ekalaka Bump-N-Run race on Saturday to bring as many participants to the area for the weekend. Both towns have had over 70 racers from a four state region participate in the races. TARA continues to strive to bring revenue to Fallon and Carter Counties and to provide entertainment to motor sports fans. The Baker
Bump-N-Run race has approximately 40 racers, their families, and about 350 spectators on average in attendance. TARA operates as a nonprofit organization and relies completely on members and volunteers to assist with labor and equipment needs for an entire racing event. TARA is searching for more volunteers to help with the race this year and general track maintenance at the complex. To join TARA, membership fees are $30 per family. Current TARA board members are: President - Courtney Dietz, vice president Bruce Brown, secretary Kristi Burns, treasurer LaNae Bretzel; board mem-
bers are Clint Dietz and Doug Rowe. TARA would like to have more people become involved not only with the car racing but motocross, also. The Baker Motor Sports Complex site has bump-n-run and motocross tracks sharing land with the Fallon County Shooting Range. Due to the close proximity to the shooting range, the bump-n-run track is closed except for race day. Dirt bikes are allowed to use the motocross track most of the time, but more involvement is needed to revive the motocross division. Riders will saddle up for St. Jude benefit By Lori Kesinger This Father’s Day will be a good day to Saddle Up for St. Jude, an event that welcomes riders and their horses to spend some time in the saddle while giving to a worthy cause. With humble beginnings, the local Saddle Up event was initiated by Marge Griebel after she was contacted by St. Jude to coordinate the trail ride. Following the first event held at the Dave Wang ranch, Griebel’s young niece was diagnosed with cancer. “I was so thankful to have done the trail ride,” Griebel said. “I wanted to help children with cancer.” Griebel continued to coordinate the event for several years followed by Doug Bruha and Dave Wang. Doug has been the coordinator for the past few years. Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. Their physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival

Bruha said the event usually brings out between 10 to 30 participants, but they would like to see that number go up. The event is open to riders
and horses of all ages and disciplines, as well as anyone who would like to stop by to watch or make a donation to help fight childhood cancer. All proceeds generated by the event go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “It’s a beautiful ride, it’s fun,” Griebel said. “Everyone visits and people really enjoy it.” The local Saddle Up event
will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 21, at the Fred Hoff ranch. Riders will leave at about 9 a.m. for a two to three hour trail ride. A potluck will be held after the ride. Funds awarded to combat noxious weeds statewide Helena - May 18, the Montana Department of Agriculture announced that over $1.5 million in funds have been awarded across the state to develop and implement noxious weed management programs. “We know noxious weeds cost agriculture millions each and every year, and there are new threats that could cost Montana agriculture even more. Through sound cooperative management at all levels and early detection, we can stave-off the proliferation of new invaders such as yellow starthistle and rush skeletonweed,” explained Director Ron de Yong. The Noxious Weed Management Advisory Council reviewed 93 grant applications requesting more than $2.2 million in funds. Through the review process, the council recommended awarding $1.5 million for activities that include noxious weed education, re-

search, and cooperative projects. “The level of grant applications is a great indication that providing these funds is very important to managing noxious weeds in the state. The advisory council was focused on making the most of the resources available to combat noxious weeds,” said State Weed Program Manager Dave Burch. The advisory council met the first week of March to review applications and make selections to assist counties, local communities, tribes, researchers, and educators. In total, 82 grant proposals were awarded funding, including 57 local cooperative projects, 14 research projects, and 11 education projects. Each of Montana’s 56 counties and seven reservations are eligible to receive $7,500 per
year for this effort and an emergency noxious weed fund is maintained if a noxious weed emergency occurs. The Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund grant program was established by the Montana Legislature in 1985. The advisory council review applications, hears applicant testimony, and provides funding recommendations to the director for final approval. The Montana Department of Agriculture’s mission is to protect producers and consumers, and to enhance and develop agriculture and allied industries. FWP embarks on new mountain lion plan Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is developing a statewide management plan for mountain lions and is seeking the public’s help identifying issues of concern. FWP’s last statewide look at mountain lion management was completed about 20 years ago. The updated plan will summarize the latest science and monitoring data, describe conservation and harvest strategies, and compile policies in a single document. “Management plans provide guidance to wildlife biologists and Fish and Wildlife Commissioners and they provide the public information on how and why specific decisions are made,” said Jay Kolbe, FWP’s wildlife biologist tasked with updating Montana’s mountain lion management plan. Anyone with an interest in
how Montana manages mountain lions can provide information and comment online by visiting FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov; then click Mountain Lion Plan. Brandon Schmidt update Brandon Schmidt has been a patient at the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Uath since May 13. Brandon recently underwent surgery for a Left Ventricular Assist Device implanted as a trial for studies. If all goes well he may be device free in six months to a year. There is a 25% success rate and Brandon’s determined to be part of that 25%. His lead doctors felt very strongly that Brandon would be a good candidate for this study “Bridge to Recovery” vs “Bridge to Transplant” or “Bridge to Destination” (which is patients that would use the LVAD and plan on using it for the rest of their life. He is up walking and eating well. The LVAD that he had implanted in his heart is functioning well. Life with an

This can mean the difference between life and death for a person whose heart needs a rest after open-heart surgery, or for patients waiting for a heart transplant , called “Bridge to Transplant” LVADs may also be used as “destination therapy.’, which is an alternative to transplant. The LVAD is surgically implanted just below the heart. One end is attached to the left ventricle, that’s the chamber of the heart that pumps blood out of the lungs and into the body The other end is attached to the aorta, the body’s main artery.
LVAD is not a lot of fun, and doesn’t mean he won’t need a transplant in a year or five years or ten years, but it does mean he can eventually leave the hospital, and there is a chance that he could be weaned off the LVAD and have it removed if his heart recovers enough. Left Ventricular Assist Device is a mechanical pump that is implanted inside a person’s chest to help a weakened heart pump blood throughout the body. Unlike a total artificial heart, the LVAD doesn’t replace the heart; it just helps it to do its
