“With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the LORD; and in the midst of many I will praise Him.” Psalm 109:30. Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday with wonderful food. It is a time to celebrate that God has given us so much bounty that we can stuff ourselves with food. It is also a time to get together with family, eat delicious food and in general feel good about ourselves. We loosen our belt buckles a notch, settle into the couch and enjoy a couple of football games. I wish and pray for all the Farmers and Ranchers for their hard work and may God give good health and protect you always. I once heard of a little boy who refused to say his evening prayers one night, not out of defiance, but simply because he couldn’t think of anything he wanted. He didn’t see much point in praying when there wasn’t anything to ask for. When his mother heard his dilemma, she suggested he give thanks for all the things he had instead. So the little boy got on his knees and thanked the Lord for everything he could think of - from his favorite toy to the fact he wasn’t blind like the boy
down the street. His evening prayers were longer that night, because he was thankful for more than he wanted. We often have opposite dilemma. We find it hard to pray, not because we don’t have anything to ask for, because we’re too disheartened to pray. Our prayers seem to hit a stone ceiling, our prayers go unanswered for years, or we simply don’t receive the peace we used to enjoy in times of prayer. But maybe we can’t pray, because we’ve forgotten to be thankful. Like this little boy, what if we took some time and turned our prayers into words of only thanks? When you pray today, don’t ask for one single thing. Just give Thanks. “With thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7. l thank you Lord, for the person who is reading this today, and I pray that they will give thanks abundantly to the Lord; and in the midst of many they will praise him. Amen. I thank God for everything, every day. Wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Community wishes Darlene a happy retirement By Shannon Johnson
On Nov. 15, community members gathered at the Fallon County Times office to wish Darlene Hornung a happy retirement after almost 33 years with the Times. Darlene grew up in Turner, MT where she went to school and graduated. She married her husband, Clayton Hornung. They moved to Havre, MT, where Clayton would attend school at Montana State University-Northern before moving back to Turner to teach for seven and a half years. Darlene spent her time babysitting and raising her three kids, Tim, Tammy and Julie. That wasn’t what she had planned, however. “I wanted to be a nurse,” she explained. “I had a child right away. I was going to be a mother. I wouldn’t have given up my motherhood. I didn’t want to go to work full-time until my kids were in school.” In 1977, Clayton interviewed for several teaching positions in Montana, one of them being a job at Baker High School. “He in-
terviewed here and he kind of knew that this was probably going to be the one,” Darlene recalled. “There was not even another thought in our mind that we’d ever move away from Baker.” After moving to Baker in 1977, Darlene babysat for several more years before going to work for Dr. Reynolds, an optometrist. After working there for some time, they closed the office in Baker. Darlene was out of work for about a month before being contacted by Alice Anderson, who owned the Fallon County Times with her husband Jim. She wanted Darlene to come to work for her in sales. Darlene accepted after giving the offer some consideration. Within a few months of Darlene working there, Jim and Alice decided to move and asked Darlene to take over the management of the Fallon County Times. “I said that I’d give it a shot,” she said. “Thirty-two and a half years later I’m still here doing it.”
Darlene has been in the newspaper industry through a lot of major changes as the age of technology swept through the early 2000’s. One of her favorite changes that she’s seen has been digital cameras. “During those beginning years I developed film and did pictures in the dark room down in the basement for many years,” she explained. “I was coughing so bad. I think it was probably because of all of the chemicals.” “Eventually digital came and we didn’t have to print anymore,” she added. “It’s changed so much.” Darlene has spent decades working with several of her employees. After spending so much time with each of them and developing a comradery, she feels as though that will be one of the most difficult parts of retiring. “Being with the same employees for a long time,” she paused. “It’s tough.” Along with missing her employees, that

With the holidays approaching, it’s a time for many to be thankful for what they have and to give back. Gamma Beta is sponsoring the 16th Annual Christmas Wishes Program, a great way you can pay it forward to people in your community this Christmas. The program is for people in Fallon County who may struggle to get their children gifts for Christmas. Every year, individuals as well as local businesses and organizations make monetary donations to the Christmas Wishes Program by depositing their donations into the Christmas Wishes account at the Bank of Baker anytime before Christmas. Monetary donations are preferred, as they do all of the shopping themselves to keep the privacy of the children and families in mind. They also accept gift-wrapping supplies, which can be left for Myra Wickstrom at Cenex. Gamma Beta would like to have all of the request forms in by Monday, Nov. 25, so they can have the time to make sure every child will have a gift under their tree on Christmas. For information on the Christmas Wishes Program, contact Myra Wickstrom at 406-778-3635.
