Community Cupboard generously stocked for the holiday By Sherry Vogel Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard to find it -generously stocked for the holiday season this year. Community Cupboard that is---and well maybe, not actually old Mother Hubbard, but the helpful staff at the local food bank. For the first time in approximately five years, the Community Cupboard is not going into the season with empty shelves. Thanks to a host of various organizations who began collecting food earlier this year, meaning before Halloween day, the food is in abundance. The people at the local food bank are amazed at the diverse and very fun ways that the various groups collecting food, went about the task. From door to door collecting, store food drives to zombie fun runs and scavenger hunts. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts had a very successful collection this year, as well as the kids from the annual school drive. The list goes on and on, churches, organizations and clubs, the list is long. Although the county has been hit hard financially this past year due to a downturn in cattle, wheat and oil prices the people have been generous, proving once again that the residents of Fallon County are among the finest. The American Legion Banquet room was decorated in a red, white and blue theme by the local girl scouts.

Veterans Day Banquet By Sherry Vogel The main streets of Baker were dressed in red, white and blue, as many American flags proudly waved in the warm autumn breeze, on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. That morning the Times was inked in the same patriotic colors and the feature stories were in honor of local area vets. Mrs. Wang’s third grade class interviewed local veterans. They shared veteran’s stories of everyday life and special moments of being in military. The children were in awe of those they interviewed, often times writing, “you are the best people in the world.” The crowning event of the

evening took place over at the local American Legion Club as 26 veterans and their families gathered together to enjoy a wonderful meal . The local Girl Scouts decorated the hall with patriotic colored balloons and custom made artwork from the local grade schools. The delicious feast of ham and turkey, donated by Hanging W Meats, was served by the American Legion Auxiliary ladies. Guest speaker for the evening was Jack Larson, a consultant at Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility, of Miles City. He addressed the topic of honor, which he shared is sometimes in short supply

these days. He stated, “Honor is something that parents need to teach their children.” He added, “Talking to our children and explaining the sacrifices veterans have made when they make the decision to answer ‘the call of honor’ to serve their country is what honor is all about.” Another Veterans Day has passed and our country still has troops on foreign soils across the globe. Remember to keep our soldiers in prayer so that they too may return to small towns across America and someday share in the joy of being honored at a Veterans Day celebration.
