~ Election 2016 - Tuesday, Nov. 8 ~ Your Candidates . . . Their View . . . Candidates will be asked a series of questions between now and the General Election. They will all be asked the same question and their answers will be limited to 300 words and printed exactly as they are submitted, unedited. Question: What one part of county government would receive more attention if you were elected?
Dave Havens
Hi, I'm Dave Havens. During the past year that I have attended the Fallon County Commission meetings there have been innumerable concerns and issues regarding our local County Government. I have had the opportunity and experience of being there to watch first hand our elected Commissioners dealing with the various issues, concerns and components of our County Government. I have been a witness to the ongoing
conversations and engagements on how to best secure a positive outcome when dealing with the numerous issues they were and still are challenged to deal with. Their task is not always an easy one. As a newly elected Commissioner, I have stated that I will represent the “voice and conscience” of you the people of Fallon County and the various concerns that you have brought forward. I am committed and dedicated to achieving that goal. Thus, in responding to all of your concerns and issues regarding our County Government, and in order to proceed forward with my commitment to you to be your “voice and conscience” it is important to understand that for me to faithfully represent all of you, there can really be no one part of County Government that will receive more of my attention should I be elected. All of the entities comprising our local County
Dave Havens Government deserve attention as they are all fundamental in the running and operation of this County. Representation is for the people, by the people. This is why I believe our County Government needs qualified and dedicated people in leadership and management positions. Today, the work of an elected official is more involved and much more complex than what is was a generation ago or even a few years ago! In preparing
Roy Rost to become your Commissioner, I have become familiar with many aspects of County Government including budgeting, communications, ethical behavior, road issues, bridges, the airport, the care of County property, the boards, the appointment process, taxes, Human Resources, law enforcement, rural and city fire departments, the correctional facility, 911, EMS, dispatch, parks and playgrounds, building
permits, the landfill, County health and hospital, development, and weed control to name a few. It is my desire and goal as a Commissioner to work with the current Commissioners to enhance County Government by finding ways to conduct government business more efficiently and effectively by finding ways to eliminate waste so that tax dollars are spent wisely! “Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things.” -Warren Bennis
Roy Rost
The pressing concerns of the people of Fallon County always come before any political or personal goals of the Commission. Fallon County citizens have personally approached me with concerns such as the shortfall of oil revenue and the maintenance of our infrastructure. These issues fall within the jurisdic-

tion of the county commissioners so I am eager to direct my attention to them as well as any other concerns that arise. Citizens from both sides of all issues will be heard and listened to, and any decisions I make will be made on behalf of all of the citizens of Fallon County. The commissioners are responsible for the county’s budget, and I will be dedicated to see that each dollar is spent wisely and responsibly to maintain and further improve Fallon County. However, the question posed specifically refers to the areas of government to be attended to. It is important to note that, although the commissioners budget for many government offices, they do not directly determine all county policies or areas of county government. A number of county of-

Beauty from ashes By Sherry Vogel A beautiful bench stands as a reminder of resilience, hope and new life following the June11 tornado in Baker. Local resident Jerry Losing would drive past the area hardest hit by the tornado, on
his way to and from work, each day after the storm. He watched as crews were busy in a major clean-up effort to remove enormous piles of debris left in the storm’s aftermath. One day Jerry noticed a
number of wooden beams lying on the west side of the yard where the Zink’s home had once sat. Jerry’s creative juices began to flow. He contacted Elaine and asked if he could have one of those
