16 and up are eligible for vaccine as case rates climb By ZACK DEMARS The Triplicate

Del Norte County has expanded its COVID-19 eligibility as case rates tick up across the county. On the vaccine front, county officials on April 1 expanded the group eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines to include anyone over 16, in the face of a drop off in demand at the county’s vaccination sites. The move — ahead of the April 15 date for that group to become eligible in all California counties — means vaccine administration sites can offer Johnson & Johnson and Moderna doses to anyone 18

and older and the Pfizer vaccine to anyone 16 or older, regardless their health conditions or other factors. “As a reminder, all these vaccines work very well, and the basic rule is to get the vaccine that is easiest for you to get access, too,” wrote Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt in a release. “At this point, there should be no reason for anyone to not get a vaccine of some sort, if so desired.” So far, just under 10,000 doses of a vaccine have been administered in Del Norte County. As for the spread of the virus in the community, case rates have increased over the past several

weeks, with 104 new cases reported between March 23 and April 5. April 1, with 34 new cases reported in the county, was the highest single day of new cases since mid-December. Most other days since the end of March have reported double-digit case counts across the county, a trend not seen since winter. The increases put the county on the path for a return to the restrictive purple tier of regulations, according to state data. Since restrictions are based on several weeks of data, Del Norte County remains in the red tier for the time being, but that could change if case

rates continue to climb. Meanwhile, all of Del Norte’s neighbors — and the vast majority of the state’s population — have moved into the less-restrictive orange tier after the state hit a vaccination benchmark Tuesday loosening the requirements to enter that tier. State officials also announced Tuesday plans to phase out that current color-coded tier system of virus restrictions June 15. At that time, the state will “fully reopen its economy” if vaccine supply is sufficient for adults who wish to receive a dose, and if hospitalizations statewide

remain stable and low, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced. That full reopening would do away with almost all pandemic-related capacity restrictions on businesses, with a few limits on large events, as well as masking, testing and contract tracing requirements still in place across the state. State officials have remained vague about what benchmarks will allow the state to move forward with that plan, and said the state would continue monitoring case rates and virus variant spread before that takes place. Walk-ins are now welcome at the mass vaccination site at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds, which is open every Tuesday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to noon on a rolling basis. Shelby Bodenstab, senior public health nurse for Del Norte County, said they have received an increase in vaccine supply, but demand is lagging behind. She said they are

administering an average of 150 shots per day at the fairground site, however, they have the capacity to give out double that amount. Public Health Authority Dr. Warren Rehwaldt announced last week that vaccinators in the county would be allowed to give the Pfizer vaccine to anyone 16 and older, and individuals 18 and older could receive any of the vaccines, as of April 1. Nevertheless, demand for vaccines has remained fairly flat at

the fairgrounds, said Bodenstab. In an effort to increase ease of access to the shot, the vaccination site at the fairgrounds is now accepting anyone 18 or older, no appointment necessary, said Bodenstab. The site primarily offers the Moderna vaccine, but they are also administering the Johnson and Johnson shot to some at-risk individuals. “If somebody wants a vaccine, we want there to be not a lot of barriers in the way,” said Bodenstab.

“If we have the supply, and we have people that want it, we want them to get it.” Bodenstab said she thinks demand could be low in-part because people in the community do not know they are eligible for the vaccine. “People are saying ‘Well, I didn’t think it was my turn yet.’ Everybody is being really deferential and Please see CLINIC, Page A3

Del Norte golf team closes season By KNOX KERANEN The Triplicate

The Del Norte High School boy’s golf team finished 5th overall in the final tournament of the shortened season. Eight teams totaling 35 golfers participated in the tournament held at Del Norte County golf course Monday: Eureka, Arcata, St. Bernard, Fortuna, McKinleyville, Hoopa, South Fork and Del Norte. Del Norte’s Blake Larson was the team’s low scorer with a 96 for the round. With the help of teammates Damon Molina, Anthony DeVos, and Nathan DeNichols, the Warriors secured a team total of 444 that narrowly edged out McKinleyville, a team that was operating with an additional golfer. Eureka finished first overall with a team total of 351. Talon Vigil from Eureka and Riley Mosher from Arcata tied for the tournament’s individual lows with matching 84s. Blake Lopez, Del Norte High School golf coach, said COVID and a few rainouts hindered the season, but the team showed signs of improvement during the Please see GOLF, Page A3

State Sen. Mike McGuire promised local officials he would keep Del Norte County and the North Coast on the top of his mind while working in the California Legislature this year. McGuire, while speaking with the Crescent City and Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce, said he has already worked to help the North Coast, but more good news will be coming. He discussed the issue on the top of everyone’s minds, COVID-19 and the vaccine. He said good news is coming quickly to California. “One-size-fits-all doesn’t work for the North Coast and it doesn’t fit Del Norte County,” McGuire said. “Long-term, the outlook for vaccine looks incredibly promising. The federal government asked the state to get prepped for 4 million vaccines a week. We’ve been receiving about 1.8 million vaccines a week.” To prepare, the state has asked every county for a plan to distribute the vaccine. McGuire said Del Norte County has turned in its plan and it is being reviewed. He said in just a matter of weeks, the vaccine increase will begin. “The short-term doesn’t look as robust,” McGuire said. “We’ve been averaging about 1.8 million vaccines, but I promise you it will get better. We anticipate 4 million vaccines coming to California. That doesn’t include pharmacies like Walmart. They get them directly from the federal government.” McGuire said the state will also increase funding to reach hard-toreach communities. With the vaccine providing a promising future, McGuire said it is time to think about economic recovery. He said the state has already taken some key steps to help. “If you’re a landlord and you are owed back rent, you need to apply for the tenant relief dollars,” McGuire said. He said the state is willing to pay 80 percent of back rent to make tenants complete. “The economic recovery plan being launched by this state is focused on small businesses,” McGuire said. He said 13 out of every 14 businesses in Del Norte County have received some grant funding during the pandemic. More funding will be available soon, he said. McGuire also said the North Coast is primed to benefit over the summer as people travel closer to home. “People are going to be reluctant to get on planes for at least the next year,” he said. “People are going to go on road trips. This will greatly benefit the North Coast.” McGuire also said the state is dePlease see MCGUIRE, Page A11
