Seniors sent off in style AMY MOSS STRONG The World

BANDON — It may not have been the traditional pomp and circumstance, but the Bandon High School Class of 2020 was sent off in style nonetheless.

On Saturday, June 6, at 3:30 p.m., most of the 44 graduating seniors and their families started lining up in their cars and trucks decorated with posters of each student and celebratory streamers and balloons in the student parking lot on Eighth Street behind the high school, assisted by various school district teachers and staff, to start the ceremonial drive-through graduation exercises. The line proceeded to the BHS gym, where each student exited the vehicle to receive their diploma from Superintendent Doug Ardiana, have their name announced by BHS teacher Lori Groves, get their photo take

by School Board co-chairman Angela Cardas and receive an armful of goodies from Project Graduation, given out by BHS Principal Sabrina Belletti and Athletic Director Josh Davies.

It was truly a group effort.

After receiving their diplomas, the students hopped back into their vehicles, and were driven down to the end of Ninth Street

by Dairy Queen, where the parade began only after every student had received their diploma. The seniors then traveled the usual holiday parade route down U.S. Highway 101 and through Old Town.

Thankfully, said many, the threatening rain clouds that earlier in the day had released buckets of water, held off until the parade was over and students were entering the dry Harbor Lights Middle School gym to have a group photo taken and be gifted with piles of useful and fun gifts donated by Project Graduation, including flat screen televisions, barbecue grills, blenders, crock pots, sheet sets, towels, dishes and pots and pans, along with gift certificates and much more.

Many of the seniors were also awarded with generous scholarships totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, both from local groups and from the post-secondary schools they plan to attend. See related story for the list of scholarships and future plans for the seniors.

The students missed much of their last semester of school on campus, though they were successful at distance learning, according to Ardiana. They also

But the seniors were as joyful and excited as if they hadn’t missed a thing — possible more so, as they reunited with classmates for a final day of memories.

“The future can be scary. It can be intimidating. And I’m sure all of you already know how stressful it can be to think, plan, and worry about what’s to come,” said class valeditoran Jessica Tittle in a recorded speech. “However, what we fail to notice is that the future is really really exciting at the same time. It brings new experiences and lessons and people that will ultimately shape our life and make us who we’re meant to be.

“Don’t get me wrong, the future isn’t all pink ponies and glitter. There will be a lot of painful life lessons, but let’s not dwell on the misery to come.

Let’s talk about the exciting parts of life instead! ... Go ahead and make some mistakes, have fun, and ultimately enjoy this time of your life because you currently hold the power to make your future whatever you want it to be!

“So, trust the process, embrace the uncertainty, and enjoy the beauty of becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.

It’s been a pleasure going to school alongside all of you and I wish the best for all of you.”

Salutatorian Becky Yu’s speech was also recorded, as was class president Aero Franklin’s.

“For the past 13 years, we’ve waited for this moment,” Yu said. “... Over the past four years, we have seen class after class graduate and it’s finally our turn.

Of course, today isn’t really what we expected after four years of hard work. ... After tonight, a lot of us are leaving, but what we aren’t conceptualizing is that tonight is the last night, for a little while, that most of us will be in the same place together, but in our case, a drive-through graduation and community parade. “ ... To be honest, this will be a memorable high school graduation, and while this isn’t ideal for all of us, I’m thankful that we are allowed to gather “together-ish” to celebrate our successes that we have achieved in the past four years. “ ... Now we won’t get our final years of sports or activities, the chance to stress over our senior project presentations, walk Ocean Crest’s halls for the last time as a student, plan and carry-out with our senior prank, write messages on every student’s cars, attend the senior trip or the all-night party, and have a common graduation.

“But instead, we ended our

high school careers by thinking that we would return to school within two weeks. So, tonight is where we would normally reflect on how our high school experiences have shaped us the past four years and the memories that we’ve created, but instead, we are reminded of what we had missed out on. “... Having an in-person graduation is something that many of us have taken for granted.

High schools across the nation have been forced to host a virtual graduation or even forced to cancel or postpone. Because of this, on the behalf of the Bandon High School Class of 2020, I’d like to thank the administration for an in-person graduation ceremony, and everything that they’ve helped us with in the past four years.”

At Monday’s regular School Board meeting, Belletti and Davies commented about how smoothly the drive-through graduation and parade went on Saturday.

“Now they want a parade every year!” Belletti said.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a Volkswagen Rabbit, operated by Stevie Shuey, 29, of Pleasanton, Calif., was northbound and crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a Hyundai Genesis operated

by Michael Lindsay, 69, of North Bend.

Shuey was transported by Life Flight to the hospital.

Lindsay sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The passenger in the Hyundai, Erica Billingslea, 33, of Coos Bay, was transported to a hospital with injuries.

Troopers are investigating DUII by Shuey and are asking anyone who might have witnessed any poor driving to call Oregon State Police Southern Command Center at 1-800-442-

2068 and leave information for Trooper Dunlap.

Community college to help small businesses The World COOS BAY — Small businesses can receive help while working to recover from the pandemic.

According to a press release from Southwestern Oregon Community College, assistance is available through its Small Business Development

Center that includes confidential advising, online trainings and connections with experts and resources from around the state.

“Our team is dedicated to helping businesses through the pandemic, recovery and beyond,” said SBDC Director John Bacon in the release. “We have helped many small businesses navigate the

various state and federal resources, finding the best solutions and helping them find long-term success.”

Advising through the center is available at nocost to small businesses and remains confidential, the release said. The service is paid for by the Small Business Administration and the State of

Oregon with the intention to help businesses learn how to thrive.

“Online classes are also available to help business owners hone specific skills to run their businesses successfully,” the release added. “The Small Business Development Center also offers advising and classes in Spanish.”

Southern Coos celebrates Susan deSalvatore BANDON — The Southern Coos Health Foundation, Southern Coos Hospital and the community recently celebrated its third Community Light, Susan Swaton de Salvatore.

Nominated for her work making and distributing masks, de Salvatore has “committed hundreds of hours, with a dedicated heart and kind soul, to provide free masks for anyone in the community who was in need,” said the person who nominated her. “We know masks save lives, and Susan is saving lives with her work. She has been a Bandon treasure!”

Having retired from her career as a social worker, de Salvatore now fills her days with volunteer community service in a number of ways including as a board member for the Citizen Review Board — a part of the State of Oregon Department of Justice tasked with assuring no foster child falls through

Susan Swaton deSalvatore the cracks of case management or court processes; as a board member for the Good Earth Community Garden; cleaning the headstones of historic gravesites in Bandon; creating public art memorial pieces; organizing the local Women’s March of 2017 and the March for our Lives in 2019; and, assisting with the Coastal Harvest Organic Garden plant and seed giveaway.

During the COVID-19 pandemic de Salvatore has

been busy growing organic produce for community food giveaways, making more than 600 masks and coordinating the creation and disbursement of another 400 masks.

“I generally do my volunteer work individually when I see a need” said de Salvatore. “There are so many needs in any community, both chronic and urgent. If somehow my efforts ease someone’s problems, connects them with an unidentified resource or otherwise adds to their life, it has been time well spent.”

Even the experience de Salvatore would most like to cross off her bucket list has a service component.

“I was scheduled to participate in a volunteer service project in Ghana before COVID hit. That is still something I will complete.”

Following advice modeled for her by her parents, de Salvatore continues to “Live her life for those who cannot live for themselves.”

Reading program begins virtually at library The World NORTH BEND — The North Bend Public Library’s Summer Reading Program begins June 15 and ends July 31, and offers games, programs and fun for people of all ages.

This year’s theme, “Imagine Your Story,” offers readers the opportunity to explore stories that fire their own interests and creativity. Using imagery

from folklore and fantasy, library patrons are invited to not only read from a variety of genres, but also to tell their own stories.

The reading game differs for children and adults, with children going on a “quest” to win prizes, while adults will be given challenges to accomplish, including a chance to produce some work of art. The art could be in any medium, including

performance. The ultimate goal would be to enter the artwork in a “Quarantine Art Show,” which will be scheduled after the conclusion of the summer program.

The COVID-19 pandemic prevents the library from the usual face-to-face programming, but events will happen via Zoom and will be recorded for the library’s YouTube channel.

Children’s programming

for the summer will be posted every Tuesday and will include crafts, games and fun storytimes, as well as ventriloquists and other performers.

Adult programming will include a series of three professional storytellers, a Zoom conversation with local historian Steve Greif and memoirist Annis Cassells, a memoir class and a paint-along.

Oregon reports 101 new virus cases, two new deaths The World PORTLAND — COVID-19 has claimed two more lives in Oregon, raising the state’s death toll to 176, the Oregon Health Authority reported Sunday.

Oregon Health Authority reported 101 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 as of 12:01 a.m.

Sunday, bringing the state total to 5,636.

The new cases reported Sunday are in the following counties: Clackamas (10), Columbia (1), Klamath (3), Lane (1), Lincoln (8), Linn (1), Malheur (2), Marion (20), Morrow (1), Multnomah (32), Umatilla (1), Union (8), Washington (13).

On Saturday, 158 new confirmed and presumptive cases were reported, as well as one death.

Our two daughters are just under 10 years old. Over the years, my social circle has consisted mostly of the parents of my daughters’ friends.

Abby, my news was met with mixed reactions. Some were thrilled for my pregnancy, while others were shocked. One woman even told me, “I’m just not in that phase of life anymore.”

After my son was born, I didn’t get visits or even a phone call from some of them.

I announced his birth on social media and mailed out a beautiful announcement, but he hasn’t been acknowledged nor have I been checked on.

I know he won’t really be affected by this and I’m trying to focus on the positives.

We have a big family on both sides, and many people within our community have warmly welcomed him. But I have been a good friend to these women, supported them in their times of need and even reached out during this pandemic to check on them in an effort to reconnect. I’m so disappointed. What am I supposed to say to these “friends” when I run into them again?

Egyptian Theatre to remain closed for now The World COOS BAY — The Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association Board has announced it will not reopen the Egyptian — for now.

The ETPA board sent out a press release Sunday afternoon to announce that the requirements under Gov. Kate Brown’s coronavirus guidelines for reopening under Phase 2 are too challenging for the board to overcome.

Following the Governor’s executive order in March to close public venues, Phase 2, which went into effect for Coos County on Friday, June 5, was intended to help those businesses and certain public buildings and recreational activities affected by the closure to reopen, such as movie theaters like the Egyptian.

“The ETPA Board has given this serious consideration and it is with a sad heart that we tell you we have decided not to reopen at this time,” read the press release. “The requirements such as 6-foot physical distancing both in the lobby and behind the concession counter and obtaining contact information from every attendee are just too challenging to overcome. Also, the distancing requirements within the theater itself (35 square feet between individuals

or family groups) would make it extremely difficult to generate enough admissions to cover costs, for both the ETPA and the nonprofit agencies that rent the theater for their fundraisers.”

The ETPA Board said it will continue to reevaluate its position in the coming months with hopes that they can reopen the theater in October. That will depend on whether conditions continue to improve regarding coronavirus transmission that result in the state relaxing current distancing requirements.

“We have also decided to forego the weekly lunchtime organ music and tours during the Wednesday Farmers Market,” the release continued. “The required sanitation after such an opening would not be cost effective for us. We hope to resume both tours and organ music during the Farmers Market in 2021.”

“We want to express our sincere thank you to those of you who have recently contributed to the ETPA to help us both with operating expenses and with matching funds for our upcoming roofing project,” the release stated. “We have received enough in donations that our overhead costs from March through June are covered. We can never thank you enough for your generosity and support of the Egyptian during this

It was not stated exactly when the mill will close but it will be some time soon. The logging camp which the lumber company operates on the east side of the bay will not be closed now.

Matson, who with Kelly, had been working late at the Coos Bay Crab plant on the North Bend dock, had just turned off the

lights in the plant and was preparing to leave when he heard a splash in the bay. Kelly in the darkness, had walked from the plant across the dock and had fallen headlong, fully dressed and wearing hip boots, into the water.

Matson, without hesitation, called a fellow worker to lower the cable of the crab cane and, catching hold of it, he was lowered into the bay. Hanging on to the crane cable with one hand, he tugged in the water until he found Kelly, who had already gone down once. He took young Kelly into the plant and revived him.

By Carl Mickelson, Staff Writer The Southwestern Community College Board of Education recently awarded bids to two local construction companies for the completion of a $7.1 million outdoor eight-lane track and student recreation center.

If that number seems a little high - that’s because it is.

The initial estimate for the two projects was $6.5 million, making the total

about $600,000 more than what the college anticipated.

Stolen property found The Curry County Sheriff’s Office has recovered more stolen property that investigators are linking with a series of burglaries that occurred in May. According to a Curry County press release, the burglaries occurred near the Harbor area. Search warrants were obtained in late May and June for rental storage facilities in Harbor and Crescent City, Calif.

Since early June, deputies have recovered about $8,000 worth of identified stolen property from the burglaries. Some of the items were recovered from people who purchased the goods from strangers.

Governor requests list of inmates for possible early release PORTLAND (AP) — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has asked for a list names by June 22 of inmates eligible for possible release to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the state prison system.

The state Department of Corrections was asked to perform a “case-bycase analysis” of inmates who are vulnerable to the coronavirus and meet the outlined criteria for possible

commutation, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

The criteria includes inmates who are particularly vulnerable, those who have not been convicted of a crime against another person and those who have served at least half of their sentences, department officials said. About 100 inmates were identified.

“Given what we now know about the disease and

its pervasiveness in our communities, it is appropriate to release individuals who face significant health challenges should they contract COVID-19,” said Brown, a Democrat.

Studies show distancing is a challenge in prisons and jails because people live in close quarters.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms,

such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death. The vast majority of people recover.

A 2018 study also shows Oregon has an aging prison population and houses the highest percentage of inmates over age 55 in the

The Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem has confirmed more than 100 inmates and several employees have tested positive for COVID-19, the department said. Many inmates have refused testing for fear they will be transferred to an even more restrictive setting so the number of cases may be underrepresented.

Inmates would be required to take a COVID-19 test before release and anyone with symptoms or who has tested positive would be

ineligible for release until they have recovered.

The Oregon District Attorneys Association said in a statement Friday that it has “significant public safety concerns about prison inmates being released prior to the completion of their sentences.”

Atlanta sobriety test turns deadly Saturday ATLANTA (AP) — One minute, Rayshard Brooks was chatting cooperatively with Atlanta police, saying he’d had a couple of drinks to celebrate his daughter’s birthday and agreeing to a breath test. The next, they were wrestling on the ground and grappling over a Taser before Brooks took the weapon and ran.

Seconds later, three gunshots sounded and Brooks fell mortally wounded.

Atlanta police video released Sunday showing a seemingly routine sobriety check outside a Wendy’s restaurant that quickly spun out of control, ending in gunfire. The killing of the 27-year-old black man in an encounter with two white officers late Friday rekindled fiery protests in Atlanta and prompted the police chief’s resignation.

Police said Sunday the department terminated Officer Garrett Rolfe, who fired the fatal shots, and officer Devin Brosnan was placed on administrative duty. Rolfe had worked for the department since October 2013, and Brosnan since September 2018.

Meanwhile, authorities announced a $10,000 reward for information finding those responsible for setting fire to the Wendy’s restaurant at the shooting scene. Flames gutted the restaurant late Saturday after demonstrations grew turbulent. The protests prompted 36 arrests.

More than 100 people, some sporting umbrellas and rain gear after on-and-off rain, protested peacefully at the site Sunday evening. Police blocked some side streets, slowing traffic in the area as people held up signs.

The two officers’ body cameras and the dash-mounted cameras in their patrol cars showed they spent more than 40 minutes peacefully questioning Brooks. The fighting erupted when they tried to handcuff Brooks.

Andy Harvey, chief of police of Ennis, Texas, who has written books and developed training on community policing, said such moments can turn in a split second.

“The moment you put your hands

on someone is when someone will decide whether to comply or resist,” Harvey said. “That’s what happened in Atlanta.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will present the findings of its investigation to prosecutors.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said in a statement Sunday he hopes to reach a decision by midweek on whether to bring charges against the officers.

The officers were called late Friday over complaints of a car blocking the restaurant’s drive-thru lane. Brosnan arrived first and found Brooks alone in the car, apparently asleep. Brooks agreed to move the car, showed his license, and Rolfe arrived minutes later to conduct a sobriety check.

“I know you’re just doing your job,” Brooks says on video after consenting to a breath test. He mentions celebrating his daughter’s birthday and says: ”I just had a few drinks, that’s all.”

Rolfe doesn’t tell Brooks the results though his body camera recorded a digital readout of 0.108 — higher than the 0.08-gram blood alcohol content considered too intoxicated to drive in Georgia.

“All right, I think you’ve had too much to drink to be driving,” Rolfe tells Brooks. “Put your hands behind your back.”

The video shows each officer take hold of one of Brooks’ wrists as Rolfe tries to handcuff him. Brooks tries to run and the officers take him to the ground.

“Stop fighting!” one officers yells.

One of the dash cameras recorded the brawl. As Brooks fights to stand, Brosnan presses a Taser to his leg and threatens to stun him. Brooks grabs the Taser and pulls it away. He struggles to his feet, the Taser in his hand, and starts running.

Rolfe fires his Taser and a yelp can be heard above the weapon’s electric crackle. Rolfe runs after Brooks, and seconds later three gunshots sound.

Both officers’ body cameras were knocked to the ground in the struggle, and none of the four police

cameras captured the shooting.

Footage released from a Wendy’s security camera showed Brooks turn and point an object in his hand at one of the officers, who was steps behind him. The officer draws his gun and fires.

“As I pursued him, he turned and started firing the Taser at me,” Rolfe told a supervisor after the shooting in a videotaped conversation. “...He definitely did shoot it at me at least once.”

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Sunday she could not confirm whether Brooks fired the Taser.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Saturday she doesn’t believe the shooting was justified.

Police Chief Erika Shields, who joined the department as a beat officer in 1995, resigned.

Brooks’ death inflamed raw emotions in Atlanta and across the U.S. following the May 25 police custody killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Some public officials questioned whether shooting of Brooks was as clearly an abuse as Floyd’s death after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck.

“The question is when the suspect turned to fire the Taser, what should the officer have done?” U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, said on CBS’ “Face The Nation.” Scott, the Senate’s only black Republican, said Brooks’s death “is certainly a far less clear one than the ones that we saw with George Floyd and several other ones.”

Stacey Abrams, the former Democratic lawmaker who gained national prominence while running for governor in 2018, said “there’s a legitimacy to this outrage” over Brooks’ death.

L. Chris Stewart, a Brooks family attorney, said the officer who shot him should be charged for “an unjustified use of deadly force, which equals murder.”

Stewart said that Brooks, a father of four, on Friday had celebrated the eighth birthday of one of his daughters.

Experts hail swift moves in Atlanta police shooting Associated Press Atlanta police on Sunday quickly released body-camera and other footage that captured the shooting death of a black man by a white officer who was swiftly fired — moves that policing experts said could help defuse anti-racism protests that were reignited by the shooting.

Atlanta police announced that an officer, Garrett Rolfe, had been fired after he fatally shot Rayshard Brooks, 27, on Friday night, and another officer, Devin Brosnan, had been placed on administrative duty. On Saturday, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms had called for the immediate firing of the officer who opened fire on Brooks and announced that she had accepted the resignation of Police Chief Erika Shields.

“I do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force,” Bottoms said.

Roughly 150 protesters marched Saturday night around the Wendy’s restaurant outside where Brooks was shot, reigniting demonstrations that had largely simmered in the Georgia capital nearly three weeks after George Floyd, another black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck.

Both Rolfe and Brosnan are white.

The firing of Rolfe and the quick release of the video to the public could go a long way toward

easing tensions in the city, said Andy Harvey, a veteran law enforcement officer who is now a police chief in Ennis, Texas, and the author of books and training curriculum on community policing.

“Transparency today is a whole different ball game.

It’s what the community expects,” Harvey said. “We have to always be open about the good, the bad and the ugly. Not just the good. I think it actually builds trust and confidence when we’re open about the ugly as well.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that Brooks, who was seen on body camera video sleeping in a car blocking the Wendy’s drive thru, failed a sobriety test and was shot in a struggle over a police Taser.

Cedric Alexander, the former public safety director of Dekalb County, Georgia, who now works as a police consultant, said the shooting will undoubtedly lead to questions about how officers might have defused the situation.

“Here’s a man who took it upon himself to pull off the road to take a nap,” Alexander said. “Could they have given him a ride home, could they have called him an Uber, and let him sleep it off later, as opposed to arresting him?

Now that does not in any kind of way excuse Mr. Brooks for resisting arrest.

But the question is: Are there other protocols that police could have taken?”

American sentenced to 16 years in Russia on spying charges

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian court on Monday sentenced an American security executive to 16 years in prison on spying charges, a verdict that drew an angry response from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who denounced the man’s treatment by Russian authorities as “appalling.”

The Moscow City Court read out the conviction of Paul Whelan on charges of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in a maximum security prison.

The trial was held behind closed doors because authorities said that was needed for the trial to consider sensitive data.

Whelan has insisted on his innocence, saying he was set up.

The 50-year-old corporate security executive and Marine Corps veteran from Novi, Michigan, was arrested in Moscow in December 2018 while he was in Russia to

attend a friend’s wedding.

Speaking to reporters after the verdict, U.S. Ambassador John Sullivan denounced the secret trial in which no evidence was produced as an egregious violation of human rights and international legal norms. He described Whelan’s conviction as “a mockery of justice” and demanded his immediate release.

Pompeo said “the United States is outraged” by Whelan’s conviction “after a secret trial, with secret evidence, and without appropriate allowances for defense witnesses.” ”We have serious concerns that Mr. Whelan was deprived of the fair trial guarantees that Russia is required to provide him in accordance with its international human rights obligations,” he said in a statement.

Whelan’s brother David said

lawyers will appeal the verdict that he denounced as political, adding in a statement that “the court’s decision merely completes the final piece of this broken judicial process.”

“We had hoped that the court might show some independence but, in the end, Russian judges are political, not legal, entities,” the statement said. “We look to the U.S. government to immediately take steps to bring Paul home.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected allegations that Whelan has become a political hostage, saying during a conference call with reporters that his guilt was proven during the trial.

Peskov refused to comment on whether Russia could be eyeing Whelan’s exchange for some of its citizens in the U.S. custody.

Whelan, who also holds British, Irish and Canadian citizen-

ship, denies the charges of spying for the U.S. that his lawyers said stem from a sting operation.

Whelan’s lawyer has said his client was handed a flash drive that had classified information on it that he didn’t know about.

Whelan has publicly complained of poor prison conditions in Russia and has said his life is in danger. Last month, Whelan underwent surgery for a hernia.

“The treatment of Paul Whelan at the hands of Russian authorities has been appalling,” Pompeo said. “Russia failed to provide Mr. Whelan with a fair hearing before an independent and impartial tribunal; and during his detention has put his life at risk by ignoring his long-standing medical condition; and unconscionably kept him isolated from family and friends.”

Whelan’s Russian lawyer, Vladimir Zherebenkov, pointed at

Russian official statements signaling a possibility that Whelan could be exchanged for Russians Viktor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko.

“There have been proposals of exchange, the issue is being discussed,” he said.

Bout, a Russian arms trader, is serving a 25-year sentence in the United States for a 2011 conviction on charges he conspired to sell millions of dollars of weapons to Colombian rebels.

He insisted he was a legitimate businessman.

Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot, is serving a 20-year sentence for conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the U.S. after he was arrested in Liberia in 2010 and extradited to the United States.

Russian officials have cast the convictions of Bout and Yaroshenko as politically-driven and pushed for their release.

President urges cadets to remember history Fourth Asian giant hornet WEST POINT. N.Y. (AP) — As the nation continues to grapple with its racial past, President Donald Trump urged West Point’s graduating class Saturday to “never forget” the legacy of soldiers before them who fought a bloody war to “extinguish the evil of slavery.”

Trump’s appeal to remember history came as his own relationship with the military is under strain from the unrelenting criticism he and Pentagon leaders have faced over their response to protests that erupted after George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.

It also came hours after Trump made what amounted to a rare concession for him: He rescheduled a campaign rally planned for Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 19.

The day marks the end of slavery in the U.S., and Tulsa was the scene of a fiery white-on-black attack in 1921.

“What has historically made America unique is the durability of its institutions against the passions and prejudices of the moment,” Trump told more than 1,100 graduates at an unusual outdoor ceremony

held during a pandemic.

“When times are turbulent, when the road is rough, what matters most is that which is permanent, timeless, enduring and eternal.”

In the past two weeks, Trump has yelled at Defense Secretary Mark Esper for publicly opposing his call to deploy active-duty troops to quell the protests stemming from the killing of Floyd, who was black, by a white Minneapolis police officer.

Trump also shut down Esper’s attempt to begin a public debate on removing the names of Confederate Army officers — some of whom trained at West Point — from military bases, an idea gaining momentum across the country.

Gen. Mark Milley, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, risked Trump’s ire Thursday by declaring he had made “a mistake” by accompanying Trump on a June 1 walk through Lafayette Square. It ended with the president posing with a Bible outside a boarded-up St. John’s Church.

Milley’s comments amounted to an extraordinary expression of

regret by Trump’s chief military adviser, who said his appearance led to the perception of the military becoming embroiled in politics, which in his view — one shared

by Esper — is a threat to democracy.

Trump also used his first West Point address to remind the newly commissioned officers of the academy’s history and storied generals like Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

“It was on this soil that American patriots held the most vital fortress in our war for independence,” Trump said. He said the U.S. Military Academy “gave us the men and women who fought and won a bloody war to extinguish the evil of slavery within one lifetime of our founding.’’

“This is your history.

This is the legacy that each of you inherits,” Trump continued, adding that it was bought with American blood spilled in battle. “You must never forget it.”

Trump, however, was incorrect to say women had been trained at West Point for the anti-slavery fight; they were not

allowed to become cadets until 1976.

His remarks also overlooked numerous West Point graduates who served in the Confederacy, including President Jefferson Davis, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Braxton Bragg. Some are now seeking the removal of Bragg’s name from North Carolina’s Fort Bragg.

In the speech, Trump leaned into his “America first” brand of foreign policy without uttering the phrase, telling the Army’s newest officers their job is “not to rebuild foreign nations, but to defend and defend strongly our nation from our foreign enemies.”

“It is not the duty of U.S. troops to solve ancient conflicts in faraway lands that many people have never heard of.” He said America is not the “policeman of the world,” but warned adversaries that it will “never, ever hesitate” to act when its people are threatened.

He thanked those in the military who helped the country respond to the coronavirus, once again calling it an “invisible enemy” from China.

(AP) — A fourth Asian giant hornet has been found in northwest Washington.

A wiggling queen hornet was stepped on by a Bellingham resident, who reported it June 6 to the state Department of Agriculture.

The USDA confirmed this week it was an Asian giant hornet, the Capital Press reported.

The hornet was found about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from where one was discovered May 27 and about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from where two were seen in December.

“We think they are really strong flyers and this could confirm that,” state agriculture department spokeswoman Karla Salp said Friday.

The two Asian giant hornets found in December were the first ever detected in the U.S. The hornet has also been seen in British Columbia.

The hornets found near Blaine originated from South Korea, according to a DNA analysis. Hornets analyzed in Canada originated from Japan, suggesting separate introductions.

The hornets are deadly to honey bees. The state agriculture department will hang hundreds of traps in Whatcom County this summer in hopes of learning whether the hornets are becoming established and a threat to pollinators.

As of Friday, the agriculture department had received over 1,970 reports online from people who suspect they have found an Asian giant hornet.

Reports are coming from throughout the country, even though the hornet has not been found outside Whatcom County.

So far, the department has concluded 758 reports were false alarms. In more than 1,000 cases, the report did not have enough information to make a determination.

The department won’t start trapping until July when worker hornets become active, Salp said.

Washington and other Western states have successfully eradicated Asian and European gyspy moths by aerial spraying. That approach for the giant hornet would also kill bees, Salp said.

Baseball players say talks with owners are futile NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball appears headed to its shortest season since the 1870s.

Continuing a contentious back-and-forth in a bitter dispute over pay, baseball players told the commissioner’s office on Saturday night that additional talks to start the season during the coronavirus pandemic are pointless and said owners should order a return to work.

The union’s action might lead to a season of about 50 games rather than the 82 initially proposed by MLB. The Major League Baseball Players Association could respond by filing a grievance that would be heard by arbitrator Mark Irvings, arguing players are owed hundreds of millions of dollars in damages due to a shorter season.

Overall, this all could spark lengthy litigation over money and a renewal of the sport’s labor wars. It could even prompt some star players to sit out.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Schools differ on reporting cases Over the past two weeks, as college athletes have returned to campuses to work out and prepare for sports later this year, a handful of them have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Arkansas State. Houston.

Boise State. Iowa State.

Oklahoma State. More than a dozen schools in all.

Just how many positive tests isn’t known, however, because college officials are debating exactly what to tell the public. Nearly half the 66 Football Bowl Subdivision members that responded to an Associated Press inquiry last week said they were still deciding whether to disclose the number of athletes with positive tests — and just over half aren’t going to release numbers at all.

The inconsistency has been apparent since football players began returning to campus this month for voluntary workouts.

Auburn confirmed three players had tested positive; a few days later, rival Alabama declined to confirm reports that as many as eight were positive, citing privacy laws. Boise State said only that a number of athletes had tested positive without providing details.

“The MLBPA’s position that players are entitled to virtually all the revenue from a 2020 season played without fans is not fair to the thousands of other baseball employees that clubs and our office are supporting financially during this very difficult 2020 season,” the commissioner’s office said in a statement. “We will evaluate the union’s refusal to adhere to the terms of the March agreement, and after consulting with ownership, determine the best course to bring baseball back to our fans.”

While the NBA, NHL and

MLS have figured out deals to return in this summer of the coronavirus, baseball has descended into the fractious labor strife that led to eight work stoppages from 1972-95. The union has seethed followed a collective bargaining agreement in late 2016 that led to relatively flat salaries for five straight years, an unsuccessful grievance accusing the Chicago Cubs of manipulating third baseman Kris Bryant’s service time to delay his eligibility for free agency and a grievance accusing teams of improperly using revenue sharing proceeds, a process the union calls “tanking.”

These raw negotiations heighten the chance of a spring training lockout after the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, 2021.

“Given your continued insistence on hundreds of millions of dollars of additional pay reductions, we assume these negotiations are at an end,” union chief negotiator Bruce Meyer wrote in a letter to Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem on Saturday that was

obtained by The Associated Press.

“If it is your intention to unilaterally impose a season, we again request that you inform us and our members of how many games you intend to play and when and where players should report. It is unfair to leave players and the fans hanging at this point, and further delay risks compromising health and safety. We demand that you inform us of your plans by close of business on Monday.”

Players and MLB agreed to a deal on March 26 calling for prorated salaries, $170 million in salary advances and a guarantee of service time for 2020 even if no games are played.

That deal agreement gave baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred the right to start the season provided there were no travel restrictions and games could be played before fans in regular-season ballparks. It called for “good faith” negotiations to play in empty ballparks or neutral sites.

Players insist they should not have to accept additional cuts. A unilateral decision to start play

could mean the playoffs would remain at 10 teams and not expand to 16, as both sides have proposed. High-risk players can opt out and still receive salary and service, but others who sit out would lose both.

“The solidarity of the players has never been more concentrated in years,” said Scott Boras, baseball’s most high-profile agent, who has three clients on the union’s eight-man executive subcommittee.

MLB made three economic offers, the last Friday, and the union proposed two. The executive subcommittee held a call Saturday followed by a larger group of about 100 players, including the full executive committee and others.

The sides remain far apart on how much players should get of the $4 billion in salaries they originally were set to earn: MLB has offered to guarantee $1.27 billion and increase the total to $1.45 billion if the postseason is completed. Players want $2.25 billion and an 89-game season.

Hamlin wins NASCAR race at Homestead HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — Denny Hamlin found the magic at Homestead-Miami Speedway, once again.

Hamlin went to the lead for the final time with 30 laps left and held off Chase Elliott for his record-tying third NASCAR Cup Series victory at Homestead.

Former drivers Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle are the other three-time winners. Hamlin is in the club now, after battling Elliott most of the night.

“This one was real special,” Hamlin said.

Hamlin raced to his third victory of the season and 40th overall. He opened the season with a victory in the Daytona 500 and won at Darlington last month. And when the night was over, Hamlin — who wears the Michael Jordan “Jumpman” logo on his race suit — made no secret that he’s racing with some extra energy these days.

“I’m motivated. I’m motivated more than ever,” Hamlin said.

He led 137 of 267 laps on the 1 1/2-mile track in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 11 Toyota, finishing 0.895 ahead of Elliott.

“I just need to get through lap traffic better,” Elliott said.

Ryan Blaney was third in a race oft-delayed by rain and lightning.

Tyler Reddick finished fourth.

“I just needed to execute a little bit better,” Reddick said. “It was tough. We were just a little bit off there in the last two runs.”

Fittingly, a very long day was the capper to a very long week for NASCAR — three Cup Series races in eight days, all of them bringing drivers into hot and steamy weather conditions that left many of them exhausted, all wrapped around the ongoing national outcry surrounding the battle for racial equality.

Bubba Wallace, the only black driver in the Cup Series, has become the sport’s most prominent activist after he successfully called last week on NASCAR to ban Confederate flags at its events; the series quickly did just that to

mostly rave reviews. So, while fans —1,000 of them, mostly invited military members who could each bring a guest — were back at a NASCAR race for the first time

since the coronavirus pandemic started, there were none of the banned flags in sight.

Most of those fans were gone when Hamlin drove under the

checkered flag at 10:46 p.m., ending the marathon day.

The race was over. So was the day. Finally.

“I knew if I was just patient, ran the pace I wanted and the pace I was comfortable with, we were going to be hard to beat in the long run,” Hamlin said.

Wallace finished 13th. Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time champion who had the tunnel that leads to the track named in his honor earlier in the weekend and is retiring as a full-time driver after this season, was 16th.

Hamlin won the first two stages and bucked a trend this season, where drivers who do that don’t wind up with the win.

Elliott swept the first two stages at Las Vegas before finishing 26th, Clint Bowyer did it before finishing 22nd at Darlington, Alex Bowman took the first two at Charlotte but ended up 19th, and Elliott did it again and finished 22nd at Bristol.

The last driver to win the first two stages and ultimately win the race was Martin Truex Jr. at Martinsville last Oct. 27. That is, until now.

“I’ll take every win I can,” Hamlin said. “Let’s just keep piling them up.”

The weather toyed with the race all day.

A slight shower, one where it only rained over Turns 3 and 4, popped up around the very instant that drivers fired up the engines to get things going. That was followed by the day’s first batch of lightning and the delay caused the race to start 55 minutes later than planned.

Drivers got through three laps — not even five miles — when lightning was spotted near the track and a caution came out that turned into a red-flag stoppage and would last for 2 hours, 8 minutes. And after about 25 more laps once things finally resumed, lightning struck again to prompt another interruption of nearly 39 minutes.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The PGA Tour spent two months learning about the COVID-19 pandemic and trying to develop a safe plan to return, followed by another month hoping for the best.

Commissioner Jay Monahan said his confidence in the plan came with a dose of uncertainty.

“If we ... got into a situation where we were dealing with a number of positive tests, that’s something — candidly — that I lost a lot of sleep over in the weeks that preceded coming,” Monahan said.

Monahan felt every bit a winner as Daniel Berger at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The tour administered 487 tests for the new coronavirus at Colonial, and the results on all of them came back negative. On the golf course, a dozen of some of golf’s best players — from Rory McIlroy to Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele to Jordan Spieth — all had a chance going into the final round.

“Listen, there is more work to be done,” Monahan said. “But this is a phenomenal start to our return.”

It was a healthy return, except for a somewhat sickly finish.

Berger made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and heard the deafening silence of a big moment with no spectators allowed at Colonial. He got into a playoff when Collin Morikawa missed a 6-foot birdie putt for the win and Xander Schauffele missed his try from 25 feet.

The playoff was held on the 17th hole, another reminder of how this week was different. Playoffs always start on the 18th hole because that’s where the gallery is packed into the grandstands. With no fans allowed, and with the 17th tee right next to the clubhouse, off they went.

Morikawa hit a deft chip to 3 feet. Berger chipped even closer from behind the green and rapped in his par. They presumably were headed to the 18th tee until Morikawa’s 3-footer spun out, and Berger was the winner.

Schauffele should have been in the playoff, but his 3-footer for par on the 17th in regulation dipped in the right side of the cup and spun out of the left side. Talk about a horrible horseshoe.

“If there are fans and everything with the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs,’ I’d probably be a little more (ticked) off,” Schauffele said. “Maybe

that’s a good thing for me right now. But it was definitely weird.”

Justin Rose had an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th that looked good all the way until it wasn’t.

He finished one behind along with Bryson DeChambeau and Jason Kokrak, who also missed birdie chances on the last hole.

This isn’t the first time Rose or anyone else has missed a big putt.

It wasn’t the first time Rose let out a gutteral moan from missing. It was just the first time he actually heard it.

“If the crowd are there, their groans or cries, whatever it may be, would have drowned me out,” Rose said. “You suddenly realize you actually do make some noise sometimes yourself. And it surprised me a little bit there on 18.”

There were reminders all week of no fans, but rarely why golf had been shut down since March 12 because of the rapid spread of COVID-19, a pandemic that canceled one major (British Open) and postponed the others until later in the year.

“The only time I thought about it was when I was having to take the tests, and that was really it,” Keith Mitchell said. “Hopefully,

nobody comes down with it and we can keep on playing.”

Players on the charter to the next stop — Hilton Head on the South Carolina shore — had to swing by the pool area at Colonial after the third round for a saliva test. If negative, they board the plane and don’t have to be tested at Hilton Head. Everyone else driving, flying commercial or flying private face another test when they arrive.

Tony Finau learned a new skill beyond chipping and putting. He learned to spit for his test.

“You just kind of roll your tongue around inside your mouth, and it seems to bring a little bit more, and also if you just lean your face down, it seems to come out a little easier,” he said.

So few talking about the virus was an indication of how safe it felt. In this case, the week doesn’t end until the next tournament begins.

“I was asked, ‘What’s a successful week look like?’ It means us getting to the RBC Heritage and having another successful week,” he said. “I feel very good about the setup there, and we’re ready to go again.”

Briscoe, Burton win Xfinity races HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — Chase Briscoe lost much of his team and got a win for them.

Briscoe survived two late cautions and a frantic overtime finish to prevail Sunday in an Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway — while adding to a nightmarish weekend for Noah Gragson, who saw a huge lead slip away in the final laps for the second consecutive day.

Briscoe was without crew chief Richard Boswell, car chief Nick Hutchins and engineer DJ Vanderley, all of whom began serving four-race suspensions for a safety violation that happened Saturday. So Briscoe — a big Tony Stewart fan growing up — got Stewart-Haas Racing competition director Greg Zipadelli to fill in as his crew chief and prevailed.

“It’s just a testament to our team,” Briscoe said.

Brandon Jones was second, Ross Chastain was third and A.J. Allmendinger was fourth. Gragson placed fifth, losing not only a race that was in his hands for the second straight day but also the $100,000 “Dash For Cash” bonus that wound up going to Allmendinger instead.

Saturday race MIAMI — A late caution flag gave Harrison Burton new life, and he took advantage.

Burton took the inside line on the way to the lead in the final lap, and held on to win the Xfinity Series race Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway — denying, among others, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Noah Gragson,

who seemed to be in full command with seven laps remaining.

Burton, Gragson and Austin Cindric were three-wide going into that last lap, and it was Burton — the 19-year-old son of former Cup star Jeff Burton, who wound up in front in a wild finish.

Cindric was second and Gragson third, two spots ahead of Earnhardt — part of his JR Motorsports ownership.

Trucks Race MIAMI — Kyle Busch’s slump wasn’t much of a slump.

And it’s over now, anyway.

Busch won the NASCAR Trucks Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday night, his 58th career win on the circuit and his eighth victory in his last 10 trucks starts. He’d been winless in his last two outings, which — by his standards behind the wheel of a truck — constitutes a drought.

Busch hadn’t gone winless in three consecutive trucks starts since 2017. He was about five seconds clear of the field when the second stage ended at Lap 60, part of a dominant night where he led 82 of the 134 laps.

The race was red-flagged for 16 minutes with 26 laps to go after Sheldon Creed crashed into the yellow protective barrels at the entrance to pit road and caused a huge mess. Once things resumed, it didn’t take long for Busch to reclaim the top spot.

Tyler Ankrum was second and Ross Chastain, who won the first stage, held off Chase Elliott for third.

Trump changes Tulsa rally from Juneteenth BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump didn’t know the significance to black Americans of the date and location he chose for his first campaign rally since the coronavirus pandemic more than three months ago, key Republican supporters of the president in Congress said Sunday.

Trump had scheduled the rally for June 19, known as Juneteenth because it marks the end of slavery in the United States. Tulsa, Oklahoma, the location for the rally, was the scene in 1921 of one of the most severe whiteon-black attacks in American history.

Black community and political leaders denounced the move and called on Trump to reschedule.

He resisted until late Friday when, in a rare turnabout, Trump tweeted that he had moved the rally to this Saturday, June 20, out of respect for the view of supporters and others who had

asked him to.

“There’s special sensitivities there in Tulsa, but Juneteenth is a very significant day, so my encouragement to the president was to be able to pick a day around it,” Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., said Sunday. Lankford said he was among several people who had spoken with Trump.

Lankford said he had called Trump on an unrelated matter and that Trump broached the issue. He said Trump told him he was thinking about rescheduling and asked Lankford’s opinion.

“I suggested, ‘Yes, I think that would be a great idea. It would be very, very respectful to the community,’” Lankford said. He said Trump immediately said he didn’t want to do anything that would show disrespect to the black community.

“He didn’t see it as disrespectful to be able to do it on Juneteenth,” Lankford said.

“Other people interpreted it differently and so he moved the rally date.”

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., said he was “thankful” that Trump rescheduled the rally.

“The president moving the date by a day once he was informed on what the Juneteenth was, that was a good decision on his part,” said Scott, the only black Republican senator.

Housing Secretary Ben Carson said he was “pleasantly surprised” at how much Trump knew about Juneteenth by the time they talked about it. He said “it’s probably good” the rally was rescheduled.

Carson, who is black, suggested Trump was considering delivering remarks to “acknowledge what had happened there and why we don’t want that kind of situation to ever occur in this country again.”

Scott said it wasn’t clear to him that Trump’s planners under-

stood the significance of June 19.

But Trump’s campaign was aware, according to two campaign officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose internal discussions.

When the date was discussed, it was noted that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden had held a fundraiser in 2019 on Juneteenth. Although selecting June 19 was not meant to be incendiary, some pushback was expected, the Trump campaign officials said. But they were caught off guard by the intensity and, in particular, the link to the 1921 massacre.

Trump had been under pressure over his response to civil unrest following the death of George Floyd, a black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer at the time his return to campaign rallies was announced, including tweets that were interpreted as insensitive to African Americans.

Scott also said he’s open to

making Juneteenth a federal holiday to help raise public awareness.

Trump and the Republican Party are also facing criticism for arranging for Trump to formally accept his party’s nomination for reelection in Jacksonville, Florida, on Aug. 27 — a day remembered as Ax Handle Saturday in the city.

On that day 60 years ago, a group of young black men and women had just dispersed from a peaceful protest in downtown Jacksonville when a mob of whites began indiscriminately clubbing African Americans.

The anniversary will be commemorated in a public square across from City Hall — on the same day as Trump’s televised address.

Lankford was interviewed on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Scott appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and Carson spoke on ABC’s “This Week.”

GOP candidates balance pros, cons of running with Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is hitting the road again. And while a campaign event with a president who draws TV cameras and raucous crowds can be gold for down-ballot candidates, these days its value can be debatable.

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, facing a competitive North Carolina reelection contest, “is looking forward to campaigning” with Trump, Tillis’ spokesperson said. GOP Sen. Steve Daines tweeted, “Montana can’t wait to have you back, Mr. President!” after Trump promised to help him battle a strong Democratic challenger.

Yet a spokesperson said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in the reelection fight of her life, “was at work in Washington” recently as Trump visited her state to open a marine conservation area to commercial fishing. The Senate wasn’t in session that day.

And while GOP Senate candidate John James appeared with Trump in May

in Michigan, where polls have trended against the president, James demurred when asked about his 2017 comment that he backs Trump “2,000%.” James said he supports Trump, adding, “I’m looking forward to running my own race, being my own man.”

Trump is the GOP’s unrivaled beast, commanding the unswerving fealty of nearly all its voters. While some Republican candidates yanked their support late in his 2016 campaign after a decade-old video showed him boasting about groping women, he’s since proved that crossing him can be politically fatal.

Yet Trump’s divisive law-and-order response to protests against police killings of African Americans, the untamed coronavirus pandemic and the worst economy in decades have wounded him. His job approval rating dipped to a dangerously low 39% in the latest Gallup poll.

That’s jeopardized his November reelection, endangered the GOP’s

Senate control and made a Republican House takeover highly unlikely. It’s also left nervous Republicans debating whether congressional candidates in tight races should link hands with him or create distance.

For most, there’s little question that homage to Trump is smartest. Sens.

John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, seeking reelection in states Trump will likely carry, have no incentive to rebel.

Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., is also not straying. “Bring it on,” Perdue spokesperson Casey Black said of any efforts to attack his closeness with Trump.

Distancing from Trump would be “a stupid strategy,” said GOP pollster Neil Newhouse. “If the base sees you’re turning your back on the president, they will cut you off.”

could well lose.

Republican candidates are “hostages,” said Trump critic Tim Miller, an aide to past GOP presidential contenders including Jeb Bush.

But he said Trump’s recent problems, like retweeting a false conspiracy theory about an elderly Buffalo, New York, protester shoved to the ground by police, offer an opening.

“I’m not asking them to become Twitter trolls,” Miller said. “But I don’t see why they don’t take opportunities to put a little distance between themselves and the president.”

Trump has pushed his Capitol Hill allies to keep rank-and-file Republicans in line and vowed to retaliate against defectors, said three White House and campaign officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss private conversations.

White House aides bridled when Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Trump ally, tweeted support for

Gen. Mark Milley. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had publicly defied Trump, saying it had been a “mistake” to participate as the president was photographed holding a Bible outside a church after peaceful demonstrators were forcibly cleared away.

After GOP Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska criticized Trump’s tweet about the manhandled Buffalo demonstrator, he unleashed his wrath at them on Twitter. Neither is running for reelection this year.

Colorado’s Gardner and Sen. Kelly Loeffler of Georgia, both in tough races, were among Republicans who didn’t answer reporters’ questions about Trump’s tweet.

“Anyone who wants to win in November should be running with the president,” said Trump campaign spokesperson Erin Perrine.

As Trump continues prodding the country to a partial reopening from coronavirus restrictions,

he’s announced live rallies in Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Arizona and North Carolina.

The White House will watch whether candidates attend and look for other signs of discontent, such as coded distancing in ads saying they’ll stand up to both parties.

No one expects Republicans to break drastically with Trump because of the price they’d pay with the party faithful. But some may feel freer to strike contrasts with him once they clear primaries, which Trump voters dominate.

More candidates could stray if polling shows his prospects are bleak as Election Day nears.

With swelling public sympathy for the Black Lives Matter movement, some Republicans have opposed Trump’s refusal to remove Confederate leaders’ names from military bases. And some are preparing legislation changing policing practices, despite uncertainty over his support.
