Sew On & Sew North, owned by Peggy Davis, hosted a Sew Together Tuesday tutorial on September 7 at Noon CST. Sew Together Tuesday is a teaching video series by Shannon Fabrics, maker of Cuddle® minky, a plush, soft, furry stretch fabric. Teresa Coates, national educator for Shannon Fabrics, and videographer Jason Hawke livestreamed the show from Davis’s fabric shop. “It was a great experience,” said Davis. “They are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. We learned a lot, and everybody loved it!” Coates started making Facebook live videos for beginners about two years ago. During the pandemic it evolved into Sew Together Tuesday. The videos are free to watch on Facebook, You Tube, and their website. Patterns are free to download so you can print off the pattern
and follow along. This spring they decided to take Sew Together Tuesday on the road. They surveyed shop owners, and Davis responded. About two weeks later, Coates emailed Davis asking if she would be interested in hosting a Sew Together Tuesday at her shop with Coates teaching
a class or two. Davis enthusiastically said yes, as did all shop owners who were offered this opportunity. Coates announced the summer itinerary of dates and locations for the
Chris Norton to speak at Langdon Area High School By Linda Timian Republican Writer In 2010 while playing in a college football game, Chris Norton suffered a spinal cord injury. He was 18 years old at the time. Doctors gave him just a 3 percent chance of ever moving again from the neck down. He defied those odds. After years of physical therapy and training, he successfully walked across his college graduation stage in 2015 with the help of his fiancée Emily. His story went viral and touched the world, receiving over 300 million views. Chris Norton will be speaking at the Langdon Area High School on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 1:00 pm. “We will have our 7-12 students attend that day and other local schools are invited along with the public,” said LAHS Principal Ethen Askvig. “We also plan to air the presentation live on Cardinal Vision that day for anyone interested at home. For individuals that wish to attend in person, we simply ask that you call the school the week of the presentation for any Covid mitigation procedures,” said

Askvig. Norton will also be visiting Grafton, Park River, and Cavalier High Schools on Monday, October 4; Harvey High School on Tuesday, October 5; and Devils Lake High School on Wednesday, October 6. The Pregnancy Help Center in Park River, ND,
was instrumental in bringing Norton to the area and arranging his appearances at local schools. Norton is a motivational speaker and has been listed as one of the “hottest keynote speakers in the country.” His Power To Stand message talks about how adversity is universal and affects everyone. Every person and organization will face adversity, uncertainty, and change. The successful ones

find The Power to Stand, to be resilient and learn how to respond and adapt. He believes that people are more resilient than they think is possible, and once they know that, they will be empowered to stand in the face of adversity. You can read more about Chris and Emily Norton’s journey in The Seven Longest Yards. Cowritten in 2019, the book shares their story from each of their perspectives - their love, trusting God, leaning on the help of others, and tackling the seven longest yards down the aisle at their wedding. The foreword is written by Tim Tebow, who called the book “a master class in the power of perseverance.” On February 23rd of this year, 7 Yards: The Chris Norton Story was released. 7 Yards is a feature-length documentary telling Chris’s inspirational story and his journey from college athlete to medical miracle to viral inspiration and now adoptive father. Choice launches child care grant program By Linda Timian Republican Writer Licensed child care providers have a new source of financial assistance through the Choice Bank Child Care Grant Program. After the success and positive feedback of the previous Day Care Gala fundraiser, the Choice Bank Board of Directors decided to create a grant p r o gram t h a t c a n provide grants in all of the communities they serve. “We see this as an extreme need and are making it a priority to stand behind it,” said Todd Borchardt, Choice Bank President at the Langdon location. “It will help sustain the childcare providers and have a high impact. It is another initiative where we are trying to give back to the communities we are in.” In the first week after the launch of the grant, Borchardt fielded several phone calls from interested providers. The demand for child care services far exceeds the cur-
rent capacity of licensed child care providers in North Dakota. According to Child Care Aware ND, there are over 120,000 children potentially needing care in North Dakota, yet the licensed child care capacity statewide is less than 37,000. “Without child care in the community, a lot of business would have trouble finding s t a f f ,” s a i d B o r chardt. The goal of the grant p ro gram is to p ro vide financial assistance to licensed rural child care facilities in North Dakota to support their facility’s start-up costs, replacement or expansion costs, and one-time operating expenses. All licensed child care providers are eligible for the grant, whether they provide in-home child care services or operate a child care center, and are encouraged to utilize this grant opportunity. The money can be used to support of costs associated with establishing a new child care cont. on page 2
