After many years of only over LaMoure-Litchville-Mariplaying American Legion base- on. It was at least 100 degrees ball, a high school program was developed and sanctioned with Larry Geisen being the first head coach in team history. After 23 years with one state tournament appearance and several close calls, heart-wrenching losses and lots of gut bunches, the Cardinals finally got it done and won their first-ever Class B High School Baseball Championship at a tournament held in Jamestown at Jack Brown Stadium June 3-5. The Cards won their first title in convincing fashion, allowing just four runs in three games played (you can find complete coverage of their tourney run on this week's sports page). This year's team had five seniors, most of which went through three years of getting so close to winning the Region 4 Tournament but lost each time to some very talented Park River-Fordville-Lankin clubs. We talked with the three senior Cardinals starters about finally reaching the top of the mountain, along with Coach Josh Krivarchka, who won Class B during every game the Cards High School Baseball Coach of played in the tourney, and Zimthe Year, while the Cards Simon mer said, "Playing in the 100 Romfo won Class B Senior Ath- degree temps was hard at first, but your body got used to the lete of the Year. The Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In turns 25 in 2021 For Cavalier, Father’s Day always brings the rumbling of thunder throughout the weekend, but that does not mean that it is going to storm. That rumble is the sound of thousands of motorcycles making their way to the small northern town for the Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In. It all started because of a new HarleyDavidson motorcycle and a Black Hills Gold jewelry salesman. In 1997, Nancy Jenson was working at H i l l m a n’s Jewelry on Main Street C a v a l i e r, and one of the business’s jewelry distributors was showcasing some new Harley Davidson pieces they were offering. It just so happened that Nancy’s husband, John, had just received his new Harley-Davidson Heritage Springer Softail after ordering a motorcycle two and a half years prior. Nancy was excited for John’s new toy, and with Greemer and Gladys Hillman’s approval, Hillman’s Jewelry started carrying the new motorcycle themed pieces. To sell the new products to
the proper audience, the Hillmans worked with a local committee who marketed the retail businesses of Cavalier. Together they transformed a Thursday “late night” shopping event into the Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In. They took out a few local radio ads, a print ad in the Cavalier Chronicle, and posted flyers in
the area inviting motorcyclists to come to Cavalier to see what Main Street had to offer. In small town fashion, somebody knew somebody that had a garage band, and they were invited to perform atop a trailer on a grassy lot. The businesses set up shop that night not really knowing what to expect, but as the famous movie quote goes, “if you build it, they will come.” That first Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In was reported to have

between 70-80 motorcyclists rolling into town. Planners and participants knew there was something to this event, so they continued the Thursday night Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In for a few more years. Eventually the Ride-In outgrew its Thursday night timeslot and was moved to Saturday; an arm-wrestling tournament was added as well. At one point the arm-wrestling tournament lasted 8 hours. The committee exchanged arm-wrestling for mud-wrestling and hosted various biker games, including the “Slow Race”, “Ride and Bite”, and the burnout competition. When the Cedar Inn began hosting a Friday night kick-off party featuring a beer garden and live music, the Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In became a two-day event. Over time the Ride-In continued to grow thanks to the forward-thinking of past and present committee members who introduced new opportucont. on page 2
had some parents bring coolers filled with water and another cooler filled with ice and towels. Pitching in the heat felt pretty good, actually. It kept my arm loose, so it didn’t get stiff sitting in the dugout or on
the base pads. It was warm up there on the mound, but when you get in and out of innings quickly it makes it so you aren’t up there overheating." We also asked him to compare a state
baseball title with three state football titles, which he said, "Winning the baseball title feels a little more special because it is the first one that we got, and we worked so hard in the years prior but came up just short. It means a lot to do something so special for the community, former teammates, and all the people that have supported us throughout all of our sports." Cooper pitched a complete game in to LaMoure, throwing just 87 pitches, and also had three hits at the plate. Like Zimmer, this is the fourth state championship for Langdon seniors Grant Romfo, Simon Romfo, Alex Clutchie and Drew Simpson, adding the baseball championship to with three football crowns. On winning a first-ever state title in baseball along with three in football, Simon said, "Winning in baseball feels a lot different because it was the first time, I think. In football, we started repeating, and it was awesome everytime, but there is nothing like winning for the first time. It is always a special feeling." Grant also added, "It was different in that baseball was a three-day tournament, so we had to come focused and ready to play, whereas, in football we on play one game. It feels great after coming so close so many times and finally getting together and bringing home cont. on page 2

“flow” trail differs from a cross country trail in that a flow trail is wider and smoother with machine-packed dirt. While all trails have the same 350foot vertical drop, the easier trails traverse the hill more frequently and therefore are not as steep. The International Mountain cont. on page 3
