The purpose of installing drain tile in a field is to try to control the water table so that plants can grow at maximum ability. A high water table is due to a restrictive sublayer below. The upper layer of the water table is called the capillary fringe. Tile is installed so that only water that rises above the capillary fringe goes into the tile and drains from the field. After Graduation Party 2021 is set, help is needed By Linda Timian Republican Writer The graduation party to honor the senior class of 2021 will be Sunday, May 30, 2021, at the Langdon Area High School. It is open to area students who have completed grades 9-12. The Grad Party planning committee members are Sara Goodman, Rachelle Romfo, Kim Schneider, and Kim Thorlakson. On the night of the party, doors will open at 9:00 p.m. and close at 10:00 p.m. If a student or graduate decides to leave after 10:00 p.m., they cannot come back into the party. Students need to be present to receive any prizes. Drawings for the door prizes will be towards the end of the night. The largest of the door prizes will be reserved for the seniors. The committee stated that the prizes are used as an incentive to stay the whole night which promotes good behavior and safety. A variety of blow-up games from Games Galore, yard games, and a photo booth will be operating until midnight. One of the games, a mechanical bull, requires a waiver which will be found on the Langdon

Area Grad Party 2021 Facebook group page in the near future. The main entertainment of the night is hypnotist Justin James from Washington. He will be starting after cleanup, around 12:30 or 1:00 a.m., and will entertain for 60-90 minutes. There will be music, food, and beverages provided throughout the night. The graduation party is fund-

ed entirely by donations. Because of the uncertainty of COVID, the timeframe for planning and donations for this year’s grad party has been reduced immensely. In the past, the community, businesses, and residents have been generous, providing financial support and volunteering time to the party.

$3,400 of the approximately $10,000 needed to have a successful party has been raised so far. Right now, the budget is tight, as the planning committee is required to make down payments to reserve the entertainment for the night of the party. Monetary donations can be made to the Graduation Party Committee and given to Kim Thorlakson, or they can be dropped off at the Langdon Elementary school office for Rachelle Romfo. The committee is also in need of door prizes (ideally for all the seniors at a minimum) and the grand prize. To donate prizes, simply contact one of the committee members. They would also welcome donations for pizza and beverages. A variety of volunteers will be needed for the evening, and the more the better! Help can be used in all areas including setting up, chaperoning, and cleaning up after the party. Once the committee has determined how many volunteers are needed in each time slot, they will post the sign-up link in the cont. on page 2

cludes: buried lines (electric, gas, oil, rural water, etc), identifying wetlands, noting any boundary conditions (roads, ditches, depths, culverts, flow from other fields), the current surface drainage system, soil types (any salinity or sodium issues), high and low spots with water problem areas (draw on your map), and possible outlet locations.

Tile grade is the rise of the land divided by the distance of that rise (“rise over run”) and is expressed in a percent grade. For example, a one foot rise over 1000 feet would equal a 0.1 percent grade. Grade can change along a tile as long as it is always sloping in the same direction. Tile grade should not be allowed to rise and drop as that will cause pooling and sediment. For tile spacing, you want to

set the distance between tiles so the water table doesn’t get too close to the surface of the field. There is a drain spacing calculator developed by Dr. Chris Hay at http://www.igrowdrainage.org/#/. You need to know the drainage coefficient, depth of the restrictive layer, the minimum water table depth you would like, and the hydraulic conductivity (Ksat value) in order to calculate drain spacing. The nice feature of the calculator is that you can change the tile diameter and depth and recalculate to see your options. Scherer shared a tile sizing slide rule to calculate tile sizes for different walled tile. There are also a number of calculators on the same iGrow.org website for pipe size and area drained. With those tools and information at your disposal you can design the tile layout. There are likely several options for the layout of the system, and you will need to assess the pros and cons of each. The cost of the project will include feet of pipe in all sizes needed, fittings, end caps, splices, tees, pipe connections, labor, and machine cost. In choosing an outlet, salts need to stay dissolved and water needs to keep moving. Everything has to drain to the outcont. on page 2

Mental Health Minute series being held By Linda Timian Republican Writer The North Dakota Department of Human Services Behavioral Health Division is sponsoring a series of four short sessions on mental health. Mental Health Minute is an ongoing series touching on different aspects of mental wellness from self-care, guided meditation, how to retain hope, and more. They are broadcast on Wednesdays at

noon through May 5th for 30 minutes and designed to be a mid-week source of mental wellness support and encouragement. The first session on April 7 focused on burnout and was hosted by Bobbi Hanson, Crisis Counselor at Project Renew. After introducing herself, Hanson first defined burnout and its 12 stages. Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or

repeated stress. Burnout happens most often with work but can also appear in parenting, caretaking, relationships, etc. While stress is short-lived and tied to specific situations, burnout stems from longlasting stress that gives you the feeling of emptiness and hopelessness. The 12 stages were defined, and Hanson gave examples from personal experience. 1. The compulsion to prove oneself.

2. Push to work harder. 3. Neglecting personal needs, friends, family, sleeping, eating. 4. Displacement of conflict. We know what we’re doing isn’t right, but we’re unable to see the source of the problem. 5. Revision of your value system. Our intense focus becomes the new value system for us, and we start to become emotionally blunt. 6. Denial of emerging probcont. on page 3
