After a season that ended with their second fifth place finish in as many years at the State Class B Tournament, the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals girls basketball team knew that they had to keep working to get over the hump to win a state title. Head Coach Rob Scherr said, "I knew this summer when we went to a Class A Camp at UND that these girls had it in them to step up their game to another level. They worked their tails off to get better than they were the year before."

The hard work in the off-season paid off big time, as the Lady Cards went through a perfect season, winning 27 games in a row and the second state title in program history. They beat a very good Grafton team 52-41 in the championship game before a Betty Englestad Sioux Center record crowd of 3,682. The Cardinals were the first team to go unbeaten since Kindred did it in 2017. Langdon-Edmore-Munich is also the first team in Class B history to win both a volleyball and a girls basketball title in the same school year. The Lady Cards senior captain and team leader, Callie Ronnin-

gen, won Class B Senior Athlete of the Year after the tournament, and she was also named the MVP of the state tourney. Callie said after the game, "Winning state is a dream come true. Getting personal awards is great, but I've always wanted more than anything to see our team do well and succeed. I am so happy for my teammates and to win the title for Coach on his 400th win is very special. Coach means the world to us." Coach Scherr, who has had an 800 pound gorilla on his back after taking four straight teams to a state tournament (two with the Cardinals and two with Park

River-Fordville-Lankin) and never finishing higher than fourth place, did get his 400th career win in the championship game with Grafton. Scherr said, "I was pretty emotional at the state tournament because I kept reflecting on how proud I am of each individual on our team and how they came together with one common goal in mind. They went after it with pride and confidence." The Lady Cards proved to be a second half team in the tourney, outscoring their opponents 93-53 in the third and fourth quarters of all three games comcont. on page 2

CDC Updates on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States By Melissa Anderson Republican Editor As of March 9, 2020, a total of 45 nations informed WHO of additional health measures they implemented in relation to COVID-19 and provided the public health rationale for these measures. On the evening of March 10, President Donald Trump informed the nation from the oval office that travel from Europe to the United States would be restricted in wake of the spread of the Coronavirus. The ban does not apply to England or Ireland. That same evening, Governor of North Dakota Doug Burgum announced the first confirmed case of the virus in the state. “We encourage citizens to be prepared and not panic – to base their actions on facts, not fear,” Burgum added. “North Dakotans should take this virus seriously, stay informed and follow recommendations for reducing the spread of COVID-19, including washing hands frequently and staying at home when they are sick. We continue to work closely with our hospitals, nursing homes, schools, the business community and other stakeholders to ensure that every appropriate measure is being taken to protect vulnerable populations and all citizens.” A novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been

previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold. Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases. The follow-

ing symptoms may appear anywhere from two to two weeks after exposure. • Fever • Cough • Shortness of breath There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). It is believed to be transferred through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Older adults and people who

have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. Please consult with your health care provider about additional steps you may be able to take to protect yourself. If you are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, you should: stock up on supplies; take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others; when you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick; limit close contact and wash your hands often; and avoid crowds, cruise travel, and non-essential travel. If there is an outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible. State and local health departments who have identified a person under investigation (PUI) will immediately notify CDC’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to report the PUI and determine whether testing for COVID-19 at CDC is indicated. The EOC will assist local/state health departments to collect, store, and ship specimens appropriately to CDC, including during after hours or on weekends/ holidays. Clean your hands often! New attorney at Scott Stewart Law Office Scott Stewart Law Office has brought a new attorney on board to assist area residents. Angelo Mondragon, formerly of Santa Cruz, California, has started practicing law in Langdon. “I went to the University of California, Santa Cruz for my undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Economics and the University of North Dakota School of Law,” Mondragon shared. Mondragon passed his bar exam last fall. His decision to attend law school and begin a career in the field came about recently and is a story that he shared. M o n dragon explained that he loves to learn and experience new things. Prior to this he had worked as a stock broker and a police officer. Not shy about manual labor either, he also worked in a hog barn and drove a combine as a farm hand but most recently was a bar owner in Manitoba. “The business was getting

crushed under the regulatory and revenue demands of the provincial government, so I formed an organization to advocate for the rural bars. At one point we were considering legal action against the Manitoba government,” Mondragon said. “I was sitting in a meeting with lawyers and they said that they’d love to help me but I couldn’t afford to pay them. I got mad and told them I would just go to law school and do it myself. That was four years ago, and now here I am.” What d r e w Mondragon to the Langdon are and the office of Scott Stewart is Stewart’s areas of practice and his nearly forty years of experience. Mondragon approached Stewart to see if he would be interested in adding another attorney to his practice. “He agreed to meet with me. After our meeting and some discussion, he offered an ascont. on page 2
