“When he did something, he did it largely. He would be the first to show up to practice and the last to leave. He had a drive, and part of that drive is just who he was as a person,” Keegan’s grandfather said. “He loved large also. I always appreciated his spirit, his love and his passion

For the first time in almost four decades, Peter DeFazio is not campaigning for office, but that doesn't mean the long-time congressman has stopped campaigning.Thesedays, with retirement looming in January, DeFazio has focused much of his efforts on getting the federal government to support a proposed container shipping facility in the Port of Coos"I'mBay.putting on a major push for the container port," DeFazio said Thursday while visiting Coos Bay to get a close look at where the shipping facility would sit. "I talked to (Pete) Buttigieg yesterday, probably for the fifth time. I've brought it up with the president twice, I've brought it up with Buttigieg many times. I'm doing everything I can. It has bipartisan support."DeFazio said he is trying to get the federal government to give a major grant to the port project, which would then open it up for additional private funding."Ithink it's a very strong ask," he said. "It would add 10 to 12% to west coast shipping capacity. I BY BREEANA LAUGHLIN The Pilot

The Keegan Boren’s life was taken tragically in a homicide in July. But his family and friends made it clear that tragedy does not define him. More than a hundred family, friends and community members came together on Aug. 27 at Azalea Park in Brookings to grieve Keegan’s loss. They also came together to celebrate his life. Keegan was described as a passionate artist, a friend you could count on, and a fierce competitor – someone who always put everything he had into everything he did.He has many family members and friends in Brookings. They sang him happy birthday. The day of his memorial would have been Keegan’s 17th birthday. “He loved his family and he loved his friends. And he had a personality that never ended. I am so grateful to have had him bless me for many years, and to have so many memories,” his mother Correne Borren said while fighting back tears.

The Pilot/The World Snowy plovers are a rare shorebird species that live on Oregon beaches. These fluffy little birds blend in with their surroundings and can be hard to spot. Just few decades ago these birds almost disappeared for good. The populations of the Western Snowy Plover have made a comeback thanks to a coordinated effort by biologists, volunteers and educated beachgoers up and down the Oregon Coast. Dave Lauten and Kathy Castelein have been on the forefront of this effort. The Bandon-based biologists came to Oregon to study plovers 26-years-ago. “We were hired to do the job the first year, and then we liked it so much it turned into another year… and then it turned into 26 years,” Lauten said. The biologists study the birds by finding their nests – which consist of just a few tiny eggs laid right in the sand. They monitor the nests along with the mating pairs of birds. When the baby birds hatch, the biologists put small colored bands on their legs in order to track“It’sthem.interesting to study the individual birds at each beach and see the dynamics of population – and what is working and what isn’t working,” Castelein said. Lauten and Castelein have worked with the Nature Conservancy and Oregon State University, and they now work with Portland State University’s Oregon Biodiversity Information Center. Their dedication to birds and to wildlife is what keeps them motivated. “We work 7-days a week all summer long. You have to have the passion to get up out of bed at 5 a.m. every morning day after day and you have to have a passion for the birds – and find it interesting,” Lauten said. “It’s a little bit like a game because you are getting clues all the time about where the birds might be nesting and where to find the birdsand whether or not the brood is still active. So for me I look at as a little bit of a challenge to make it fun,” he said. Bringing the birds back Not everyone knows there are endangered-species right here on the Oregon Coast, the biologists said. “There are a lot of people that don’t understand what is going on, or don’t even know

The City of Brookings is starting a series of street improvement projects using funds from the city’s voter approved local fuel tax. The city council awarded a contract to Tidewater Contractors in Brookings for almost $710,000 at their council meeting last week. The contractors will work to repave Alder Street, Memory Lane, Buena Vista Loop, Marine Drive and a portion of Mill Beach Road. The work is expected to start this month and may extend into Spring 2023, according to a pressThisrelease.contract also includes patching at various locations around town. A separate project on Railroad Street is already underway to construct storm water inlets and pipe, and then installing a curb, gutter and sidewalks along both sides of the street between Center Street and Mill Beach Road. That $527,000 project was contracted to McLennen Excavators in Together,Brookings.theprojects total more than 1.5 million in street and sidewalk improvements. “This is all a part of our long-term program to improve and maintain city streets,” said Mayor Ron Hedenskog. The city also announced in a separate release that new parking regulations will go into effect in September. The City Council reportedly postponed the effective date in order to give effected residents time to find alternative Bandon biologists dedicate themselves to snowy plover recovery

Keegan’s family members and friends shared fun stories they remember from being with him – like the time his grandfather caught a fish and when he was reeling it in the fish got free. His grandma said Keegan jumped the water and got it, then the two of them argued who actually caught the fish. One of his friends said at one of Keegan’s birthday parties around fifth-grade he wanted to win a bike race so bad, he forgot it would require stopping at the end and crashed over his handle bars – but he still won. His great grandmother said when she played Chinese checkers with him she wouldn’t let him win – but eventually he got the skills to beat her at the game fair and square.Pastor Bernie Lindley from St Timothy's Episcopal Church was one of two pastors who spoke at the memorial.“Aswe gather today and we process the grief, and we recognize and celebrate the life of Keegan, we can’t let the tragedy of how it is he died overwhelm the life that he led,” he told Keegan’s family and friends.Pastor Bernie also comforted Keegan’s mother. “We are all here for you. This isn’t a small thing you are going through.” Although Keegan’s life ended too soon, a family friend and pastor Matt McAuliff urged the audience not to hold in their grief.

It made me want to be a better artist myself,” one of his friends said. “I’m fighting the tears but he would have wanted us to stay positive. He wanted his music stuff –but it was bigger than that. He wanted anyone with the love in their heart to hear what he had to say. He wanted this generation to be and do so much.”

DeFazio Continued From Page A1 don't see any other way to do that. Here, we're going ship to rail, the only port of ship to DeFaziorail."said using the rail line to move containers from the port is a big ben efit because rail is cheaper and much friendlier to the environment than moving containers by truck. He said he wanted to come to Coos Bay and see the exact location the port hopes to build the facility because seeing it with his own eyes will give him a greater understanding as he fights for the project. "We'll know in about a month, probably," the congressman said. "They're going to do mega grants every year and they want to allocate it all by the end of the fiscal year, which is October 1. There's a lot of competition nationwide, but this is a unique project." The Port of Coos Bay has already bought the land for the shipping terminal and has signed an agree ment with North Pointe to develop it. DeFazio said if the federal grant is ap proved, progress could be seen quickly. "I think North Pointe has some interested clients, people who are big in ship ping," he said. As DeFazio looks at retirement in a few months, he said one more major win for the Southern Oregon coast would be a nice way to cap his career. "I've done a lot down here on the coast," he said. "We wouldn't have railroad if I hadn't intervened. I've tried to put an emphasis on Coos Bay and the coast. This would be big. This would be the biggest thing on the South Coast." While the container port would be a major coup for the area, DeFazio continues to work on smaller, but important projects. He said a wastewater treatment plant at the Port of Brook ings-Harbor has been fund ed and is moving forward. "They were threaten ing to close the processor down if we didn't have a solution," DeFazio said. "Now we have a solution." With increased funding in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, almost every harbor will benefit with increased dredging, includ ing Gold Beach, which has been ignored for way too long."We're getting access, hopefully, this year, to the harbor at Gold Beach," DeFazio said. While DeFazio is not running for another term in the Fourth Congressional District, he said he will work hard to make sure Democrat Val Hoyle wins the seat he has held for decades."I'mstrongly support ing Val," he said. "I've known her for a long time. I worked closely with her when she was a legisla tive leader and I worked closely with her as labor secretary. I think she'll be a great representative for the district, and I feel her views are more in line with the district that Mr. (Alek) Skarlatos."

NSF grant to OSU researchers will aid development of antibody treatment for dogs with cancer
“The efficacy of immune-based therapeutics has already been tested in the human clinic for cancer and other diseases, but we’re not going to take human drugs and try to adapt them to the dog,” Mourich said. “We’re going to make the dog drug that does the same thing.”
DeFazio said he has watched, sometimes with humor, as Skarlatos has campaigned this year. "Mr. Skarlatos is trying to redefine himself," De Fazio said. "I think we saw the real Skarlatos last time and we're seeing a coached Republican candidate Skar latos this time." While retirement is get ting closer, DeFazio said he still has work to do before he steps aside next January. "Right now, I'm focused on the job and spending a lot of time on the archives. The University of Oregon is taking my archives. I'm going to take a little break and see what interesting things there are to do." One thing DeFazio said he is certain about next year is there will be fewer plane trips across the country, which brings him much relief. He said the average trip from Springfield to Washington, D.C. takes 21 hours, the longest trip by any congress member in the lower 48 states. "I'm not going to be get ting up at 3 o'clock in the morning to catch a 5 a.m. flight to get back to Wash ington, D.C. for a vote. Over my career, it's about 435, 40-hour work weeks commuting back and forth to Washington, D.C."

The Pilot The Curry Public Library in Gold Beach is showcasing more than books during the month of September. The library is lined with all kinds of silent auction items ranging from a banjo to a kayak, an Italian leather purse to a microscope.“There’ssomething for everyone among the 50 items being auctioned at the Curry Public Library in Gold Beach - per haps even a terrific wedding, birthday or Christmas gift for a friend or family mem ber,” said Dianne Daniels the secretary for the Friends of Curry Public Library. The Friends of the Library organizers said the community of Gold Beach has donated the best selection of auction items ever offered in the eleven-year history of thisAllevent.50items are in “like new” condi tion, with almost half being brand new. Sandy Grummon, the Friends of Curry Public Library silent auction chairperson, said the nonprofit originally got the idea to hold a silent auction from the Langlois Library. They asked the library if they could hold a silent auction too, and the libraryOriginally, obliged.Grummon said, they thought auction items should all require a one-hun dred dollar bid or more – but the Langlois library organizers encouraged them to include items of all sizes, and all prices, so everyone could participate – and Grum mon said they are so glad they did. By MOLLY ROSBACH Guest Article Researchers at Oregon State Universi ty’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medi cine are moving forward with developing a specialized antibody treatment for dogs with cancer, thanks to a recent grant from the National Science Foundation. The research team plans for this treat ment to be a gentler, more targeted and effective option for addressing canine cancer, just as immunotherapeutics are used in human cancer patients. “It’s not a drug like chemothera py where it’s a toxin. You’re actually recruiting the body’s natural immune response for clearing out transformed cells — for instance, a tumor — and then it kills them,” said Dan Mourich, senior OSU research associate and the molecular biologist on the research team. Currently, veterinarians can use radia tion, chemotherapy and surgery to tackle canine cancer, but these typically involve frequent trips to veterinary hospitals where the dog must be sedated, and can take a physical and emotional toll on both pets and owners, Mourich said. In contrast, the OSU therapy will be administered daily in the home as a small subcutaneous injection, similar to how pet owners with diabetic animals inject them withTheinsulin.research team includes Dr. Chris Cebra, camelid expert and the chair of the clinical sciences department in OSU’s veterinary college; former OSU profes sor and clinical veterinary oncologist Dr. Shay Bracha, who recently joined the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center; and Dr. Carl Ruby, veterinary pharmacology instructor at OSU. The treatment was developed with help from some unlikely collaborators: the llamas and alpacas that OSU owns, which are both members of the camelid family. Researchers injected them with a protein found in canine tumors, which provoked the alpaca’s immune system to respond by creating a specific antibody. The researchers then screened a “ge netic library” of the resultant antibodies to determine which were most effective at binding and blocking tumors from inter acting with that protein on dogs’ cytotoxic killer T-cells, the cells responsible for fighting cancer. “Killer T-cells are essentially the small est scalpel you can have,” Mourich said. “They identify the cancer cell, remove that cell and leave healthy tissue alone. They’re so precise that you can utilize them to go and eliminate all the little piec es of tumor around the body.” Camelids can produce a specialized smaller type of antibodies referred to as “nanobodies.”Theirsmaller structure allows nanobodies to penetrate tissues that aren’t accessible to larger antibodies, and also makes them easier to produce and store for long periods of time, which reduces the overall cost. The $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation Partnership for Innovation will allow the researchers to develop their clinical candidate and establish a production method for the treatment, after which they can hold a clinical trial to test its effectiveness.

When most people think of the death of democracy, they think of a terrible coup led by a mob and finally supported by a perverted military. The unsuccessful insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, fits that image. The military never got involved, but an angry crowd, encouraged by political actors, did its However, best. many regimes transform quietly, almost imperceptibly. The institutions that we know are still all around us. Life doesn’t seem that different when we go to the store to buy groceries. But nothing is really the same. The regime changes before people realize it because the government seems the same. Plato talked about the difference between government and regime. The government is the structure of political order and its institutions. But the regime (politeia) is the animating principle of the government, its soul, so to speak. In the United States, the government is defined by three branches of government — the executive, legislative and judiciary, a written constitution, and laws that define the powers exercised by the governing bodies. But the regime is the fundamental principle of democracy and the democratic way of life. What most people don’t understand is that the shell of the government can remain familiar while the regime slips away. As Brian Klaas points out in his recent article in The Atlantic, “When democracies start to die, they usually don’t recover. Instead, they end up as authoritarian states with zombified democratic institutions: rigged elections in place of legitimate ones, corrupt courts rather than independent judges, and propagandists replacing the press.” Smart authoritarians don’t seek an awkward insurrection or a risky military coup. Instead, they work tirelessly from the ground up to transform a country’s institutions while claiming that they are saving the country from internal and external enemies. They quietly change seemingly minor election laws so that elections can be controlled and political opponents marginalized. And they work to elect loyal party members to positions of modest authority so that future elections can be manipulated without a messy controversy. And all of this is done in the name of protecting election integrity.Theypack the courts with partisan, political hacks. But the courts still operate. Nothing looks amiss on the surface. If there was a move to close our courts, people might react negatively. Better to keep them open but make sure they are incapable of rendering unfriendly decisions. And the laws that used to protect us are one by one overturned. And they attack educational institutions to create a platform for propaganda while claiming to be protecting the schools from being used for indoctrination. They censor books in the name of protecting decency and threaten teachers’ autonomy to control what is taught. Good, hardworking, principled teachers are fired or quit their jobs in disgust, and a new cadre of authoritarian teachers slowly takes their place. Our schools don’t disappear; they just cease to be educational institutions. We still drive down the street and see the same school buildings and school buses. But the animating principle of the schools has changed. The legislature still acts and passes what looks like legislation, but it is no longer a check and balance on the president’s power. It does the bidding of the president. The political party becomes an extension of presidential ambitions and desires, and the legislature only exists to promote the president’s agenda. And the same happens to the bureaucracy.Andthepress. It doesn’t go away, but the campaign to delegitimize freedom of the press pushes forward daily. The press is called “the enemy of the people,” and fact-checkers are accused of partisanship. New, shady groups are established that look like the old independent press, but they are owned and operated to promote authoritarian changes. People who look like network anchors or reporters begin to proliferate, but they are tools of the authoritarian movement, not a check or balance on it. The evening news still comes on. But those in authority call the shots. So we must be vigilant. It is not enough to judge by appearances and be comforted by the fact that our political institutions seem intact. Our regime hasn’t been preserved just because we don’t have another January 6. Our governmental institutions may still seem to be operating. The question is this: Is the animating spirit behind the government democratic or authoritarian? We must not allow the incremental downfall of democracy, orchestrated by behind-the-scenes efforts of democracy’s enemies. This is a time to stand up, be counted and make our voices heard.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
GUEST COLUMN
Over the years I have faced several health issues and spent time in some of the best cancer research facilities and hospitals across this country with the highest grades I could give. More recently, I had a health scare that required an emergency surgery and a long stay in the hospital a well a continued care after I was sent home. Our Curry General was equal to the task. I would like to take this time to thank the hospital board and CEO Virginia Williams for the work they have done. The staff you have put in place during these trying times along with the attention to detail is as good as I have ever experienced. It is efficient, clean, and given all the traveling staff that is currently required to run it, very well managed.Thenurses that helped me through my time were professional, caring and they always included a smile while doing a difficult job. Taking care of several patients with different needs and doctors’ orders and medications must get hard. Even down to the cleaning staff, everyone was professional and very kind. I wanted to also give a special shout out to the surgical team that helped me through a difficult surgery and a special thank-you to Dr. Jessica Carlson for her attention to detail and going out of her way with follow up appointments in my aftercare. Much has been said about our new Hospital and the Emergency Room in South County. As for me, it was all money well spent to keep our families safe and give better healthcare to our citizens. Kudos to Ms. Williams and all the staff in Curry General and many thanks for saving my life. Christopher Paasch Curry resident and current County Commissioner Magic beans P-s-s-t! Hey commissioners! So, while I was at the library checking the native photographs in the latest edition of National Geographic, I decided to do a bit of cloud making research. Imagine my dismay when the nice librarian informed me every publication with any mention of cloud making had already been banned AND burned after the Pope determined such ideas were the work of witches, spawn of theNodevil!problem. Just in case, I'm already preparing. Thanks to some fine homeless folks who have volunteered to help, I am building a great ark. If you're interested, I could use a little more help. Just about every video game, young adult novel and buzz-worthy streaming series agree that we need to prepare for a post-apocalyptic world. Up ahead, around a sharp curve or off a cliff, it is waiting— The Apocalypse. Maybe not “the complete final destruction of the world,” but certainly “an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale,” to quote the two definitions in the Oxford Online Dictionary. Not yet, but soon. This has me wondering: How will we know when we move from pre- to post-apocalypse? This summer, my hometown in southern Oregon was crushed under a heat dome, sweltering in triple-digit temperatures. A fire across the state line ignited and within 24 hours exploded to become California’s largest wildfire this year so far. The two mountain lakes that provide water to our valley orchards and vineyards are at 2% and 6% full, that is, 98% and 94% empty. Last year, an even more severe heat dome pushed temperatures in normally cool Seattle and Portland to record-shattering levels, wildfires burned more than a million acres in Oregon and 2000-year-old giant sequoias perished in fires of unprecedented severity in California’s Sierra Nevada.Catastrophic extremes are becoming Please see APOCALYPSE

Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.

Widening our view, Dallas is currently inundated with what is described as a “1,000-year” flooding event, following similar flooding disasters in Las Vegas, St. Louis and Kentucky earlier this summer. Across the Atlantic, Europe was scorched by the highest temperatures ever recorded this summer, triggering massive wildfires, the collapse of a glacier in Italy and over 10,000 heat-related deaths. India, China, and Japan experienced record heat waves this year. I could go on, but no doubt you have read the news, too, about climate-caused apocalyptic events. Closely related is the global extinction crisis, with over a million species at risk by the end of this century. Bird populations in the United States have collapsed by one-third in the past 50 years, and the world’s most diverse ecosystems, including tropical rainforests and coral reefs, could largely disappear in coming decades. Let’s also not forget the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed at least 6.46 million people worldwide and sickened 597 million. That pandemic shows no sign of ending as the virus continues to evolve new variants. Meanwhile, the new global health emergency of monkeypox has been declared. And polio, once eliminated in this country, is back, thanks to people who aren’tWhatvaccinated.aboutAmerica’s social fabric? According to a poll taken this summer by the New York Times, a majority of Americans surveyed now believe that our political system is too divided to solve the nation’s problems. The non-profit Gun Violence Archive has documented 429 mass shootings so far this year in America, with “mass shootings” defined as at least four people killed or Meanwhile, injured.the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade has led to a rapid and stark division of the country into states that permit abortions versus those that outlaw it. Republicans and Democrats increasingly live in separate media universes, with both sides concerned about the possibility of a civil war. I admit this is a staggering list of “damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale,” but I’m not ready to declare myself a citizen of the post-apocalypse. We don’t have to live there. Instead, let’s accept that humanity and the whole planet are “apocalypse-adjacent.” The apocalypse is before us and we can see it clearly. But the world is not yet Humanruined.beings do have this redeeming and also infuriating trait: We are at our most creative and cooperative when it is almost too late. We can — we must — pull each other back from the brink. To fail is to condemn our children to live in the hellscape of a dystopian video game. As they will tell you, that is no place to be. “The signs are here for a reason. It helps people to be aware,” Castelein said. “When you get to the parking lot, take the five minutes to read the signs so you can understand what the rules and regulations are. Because we do try to provide space for humans to recreate even where there are snowy plovers.”The30 seconds of attention it takes to become aware of the snowy plovers can make the difference between a positive or negative human interaction. Snowy plovers can co-habitate with humans if the humans just give them a little space – the biologists“Generallysaid. speaking, we do get cooperation from the public. The ones who don’t usually follow the rules usually fall into two categories: They are just are new to the beach or don’t pay attention, or you get serious violations from people who are repeat offenders and there’s just not much you can do except bring in law enforcement,” Lauten said. “We would rather just educate people though,” Castelein added. “Sometimes we ask people to stay on the wet sand and they have trouble understanding what that means.” “I also think people sometimes assume plovers are nesting in the grass and not just right on the beach and that’s a tough one to get across. Literally their nest is just three “rocks” on the sand and it’s so easy to step on it – or a dog or horse to walk on it, or also an ATV or a bike,” Lauten said.Because they dedicate so much of their time an effort to snowy plover recovery, the biologists said it is disappointing to they see plover eggs or a nest destroyed by human causes.“It’s a little rough because we have hosts designated at the state parks – people who are out here often and moving ropes around and trying to educate people – so it is avoidable,” Castelein said. People should be able to recreate on the beaches and there should be room for plovers to nest too, she said. The idea is to "Share the Shore." This means having fun while protecting the natural environment at the same time. Did you know? The average life of the snowy plover is about 3 years – but the record holder is 16 years old. Female plovers maximize reproductive output by nesting with different males throughout the nesting season. This is called serial “they’reprecocialPloverpolyandry.chicksare–meaningcute, right?”
“They are really smart and really efficient at finding plover nests – and as Kathy and I say the ‘incredible edible egg.’ It’s a lot of protein and it doesn’t fight back or bite,” LautenAlso, said.because plovers live on the beach and lay eggs right on the beach, their nests are at risk of inadvertently being stepped on or trampled over by beach-goers, dogs, horses andHumanATVs.interaction can also make snowy plovers leave their nests – and wind can blow sand over their nests or predators can swoop in while they are away.Pay attention to signs State and Federal agencies have placed signs to alert beachgoers of the presence of plovers, and sometimes rope off certain areas of beaches where plovers nest.
Chetco Medical & Aesthetics is a premier medical clinic on the southern Oregon coast that offers comprehensive medical care as well as aesthetics services. Specialties of the clinic include Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Weight Loss, and Aesthetics. The services are provided by five medical professionals: Dr. Jay Patel, MD, Dr. Palak Patel, MD, Viridiana Jefferson, PA-C, and Obiri Yeboah, AGNP, and Vanya Valencia, PA-C. Chetco Medical & Aesthetics is currently accepting new patients. In addition to providing medical care and routine testing like EKG and PFT, Chetco Medical & Aesthetics also offers exten¬¬sive diagnostic testing including ANSAR (Autonomous Nervous System Testing), screening for vestibular dysfunction with videonystagmogram, cognition screen and CANS-MCI, screening for peripheral vascular disease, and screening for peripheral autonomic Chetconeuropathy.Medical & Aesthetics expanded its aesthetics services with Bellezza, a new state-ofthe-art medical spa that opened its doors in November 2020. Bellezza is the only physicianowned and operated medical spa on the southern Oregon coast, and offers a broad selection of aesthetics services including Botox, fillers, CoolSculpting/ CoolTone, non-surgical facelifts, and skin rejuvenation services such as laser resurfacing, sun and age spot removal, microneedling, and medical grade facials. Other services include skin tightening, hair restoration treatments, intimate health, laser hair removal and many more. Most recently, Bellezza added Liposuction with radiofrequency-assist, which has shown amazing results for fat reduction and body contouring. Chetco Medical & Aesthetics began with the medical practice of Dr. Jay Patel. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Obesity Medicine and has been a practicing physician in the Brookings community since 1987. His practice includes treatment of a broad spectrum of medical diseases such as managing both common and complex illnesses of adolescents, adults and the elderly. His son, Dr. Palak Patel, joined the practice in 2016. Dr. Palak is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. He grew up in Brookings, along with his twin brother and his sister, Roochita Patel. He attended the University of California San Diego for his undergraduate studies. He completed his medical education at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland. He then went on to DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to complete his internal medicine training prior to graduating from his geriatric medicine fellowship program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, one of the top geriatric programs in the Incountry.2016, the CoolSculptingfat-freezingdevicewas added to their practice, and the doctors were pleasantly surprised by the feedback from their patients. They noticed there was a gap in options for medical-grade aesthetics services in the area, so Dr. Palak became trained and certified in aesthetics procedures including Botox, fillers, and laser treatments and started offering them in the clinic. Over the following years, the doctors saw increased interest in these types of services, so they decided to build Bellezza to expand the range of services available to match the community’s interest. The team at Bellezza strives to meet the goals of their patients to help them look as young and as youthful as they feel. They are committed to providing safe and effective treatments utilizing state-of-theart technologies, combination therapies, and specially-curated medical-grade skin care lines in a pristine spa environment. They provide comprehensivephysician-developedtreatmentplans that are customized for each individual. The treatments are overseen by a physician, and are administered by trained professionals including a physician, Registered Nurses that are also certified advanced injectors, and an Aesthetician. (541) 412-9800 • 97825 Shopping Center Ave, Brookings, OR that these birds exist,” said Lauten. “But it’s happening right Snowyhere.”Plovers were listed as an endangered species in 1993. At that time, there were only about 70 snowy plovers left on Oregon Coast beaches. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service designed a recovery plan for snowy plovers with a goal to grow the population to 250 plovers on the Oregon Coast and the southern tip of TheWashington.population of snowy plovers has exceeded that goal since 2015 – and the highest estimate of breeding birds recorded was 613 birds in 2021, according to Cheryl Strong, a fish and wildlife biologist based in Newport. “We definitely have years when they do better than others – but in the big picture of things they are doing really well,” Strong said.A number of different agencies have been involved in snowy plover recovery – from federal and state agencies, to nonprofits such as Audubon. “It’s a very cohesive group. It's been a very collaborative effort that has been going on to help recover this species in Oregon,” Strong reported. Biologists Lauten and Castelein said when they originally started working with plovers, their habitat was limited to only certain beaches on the south end of the Now,state.they nest in every county on the Oregon Coast – which is really a success for the state, they said.Plovers in peril Snowy Plovers have been in trouble for a few different, but inter-related, reasons. This includes habitat loss, an increase in predators and human disturbance.SnowyPlovers rely on camouflage and early detection of predators to survive. They like to be in wide open places where they can see threats coming from far away. Invasive grasses have made it easier for different kinds of predators to prey on snowy plovers. “The grass can bring in predators like raccoons, skunks, foxes and weasels. They can hide out in that habitat where they couldn’t 100 years ago,” Castelein said.Another main predator is ravens and crows. “There are a lot more of them now than ever because of the human resources that they exploit like dumps and dumpsters and even farms,” said Lauten.Ravens are extremely intelligent animals and they are broad omnivores, so they can eat a lot of different things, he said. Unfortunately this includes snowy plover eggs.

“Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat we face today,” said DEA Acting Special Agent in Charge Jacob D. Gal van from the Seattle Field Division. “It doesn’t matter what color, shape or form it comes in; just two milli grams of fentanyl – the equivalent of 10 to 15 grains of salt - is enough to kill someone. DEA’s Portland Office is seizing record amounts of fentanyl and we will continue this important work because we know American lives are at stake.”Opioid abuse affects communities across the nation. Provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that there were more than 107,000 fatal drug overdoses in the U.S. in 2021, an increase of nearly 15% from the previous year. Synthetic opioids (primarily fentanyl) accounted for more than three quarters of these deaths. Drug overdose continues to be the leading cause of injury or death in the United States.Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 80 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and 30 to 50 times more pow erful than heroin. A 3-milligram dose of fentanyl—a few grains of the substance—is enough to kill an average adult male. The availability of illicit fentanyl in Ore gon has caused a dramatic increase in overdose deaths throughout the state. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. If you or someone you know suffers from addiction, please call the Lines for Life substance abuse helpline at 1-800-923-4357 or visit www.linesforlife.org. Phone support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

With at least two notable seizures in the last several days in the Portland Metropolitan Area, officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are warning Oregonians to be on the lookout for “rainbow fentanyl,” a brightly-colored version of the highly-toxic synthetic opioid responsible for hundreds of fatal overdoses every day in the United States. Rainbow fentanyl has appeared recently in sever al forms in cities across the country. A version seized recently in the Portland area resembles thick pieces of brightly-colored sidewalk chalk. Some versions seized elsewhere in pill or tablet form resemble candy. If you or someone you know encounter any version of fentanyl, please refrain from handling it and call 911 immediately.“Weurgeall Oregonians to be on the lookout for fentanyl in our community and respect the highly-toxic nature of this substance,” said Steve Mygrant, Chief of the Narcotics and Criminal Enterprises Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon. “Fentanyl is commonly disguised in fake prescriptions pills. If you find or come in contact with pills not dispersed by a licensed pharmacist, assume they are fake and potentially lethal. Fake pills are indistinguishable from real pills.”

The new regulations limit the storage of vehi cles, including passenger vehicles, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, and utility trailers on City streets to no more than 72 hours. The new regulations reportedly stemmed from a variety of city com plaints regarding utility trailers and RVs includ ing motor homes travel trailers and utility trailers parked on streets making it difficult in some in stances to drive through these areas without going into the oncoming lane of traffic and also making visibility of oncoming traffic a challenge for ve hicles pulling out of side streets and driveways. Public Works and Development Services Director, Anthony Baron, also noted the diffi culty to perform street maintenance and the strain it puts on garbage and recycling service vehicles where narrow right-of-way streets are being used for long-term storage of passenger vehicles, RVs, and utility trailers.“You can tell which ones they are as they usually have weeds growing through the pavements under them and you can see where the street sweeper has made a pass around it over a long period of time,” Baron stated in a press release.

Manley Art Center announced the opening reception for the Septem ber Art Exhibit, will be held Saturday, September 10, from 3 to 6 p.m. at The Manley Art Center, located at 433 Oak Street in TheBrookings.exhibit, on dis play from September 6 through October 1, features three-dimensional cre ations by Donna Goss and Brian Childers. Sculpture is Donna’s favorite expres sion in art. Although she has taken some courses in sculpture, Donna mostly learned from reading and experimenting with tools and finishes to achieve the best result, as she devel oped personal techniques and style. She enjoys the beauty of both wood and stone as she shapes out, sands, and finishes sculp tural forms which are both satisfying and complete. Brian Childers art is an exploration of both woodturning and what he calls wood constructivism. His designs are influenced by the earthy shapes and fine finishes of the arts and crafts movement, the mod ern look of Prairie Design, and the subtle elegance of the shapes found in the arts of Japan. Brian finds the act of manipulating a block of wood with saw and drill and lathe and chisel to find the possibilities within is both a maddening series of questions and a satisfying set of answers. He seldom begins a project with a firm vision of where it is going, but rather he cuts and turns and manipulates the wood while paying attention to what shape the wood is pushing him towards. Also during the month of September, The Manley Art Center is honored to host the Latinx Story Projects mobile art exhibit, Elements of Home. Elements of Home, Led by De La Raíz (From the Root) Latinx Story Project consists of four paintings created by two Southern Oregon Latinx artists that explore the connection between home and our relationship with water, air, fire, and Earth. The rest of the exhibit will be filled out with a variety of art created by the Manley Art Center members. Proceeds from the sale of artwork are shared between the artists and the Manley Art Center. The Manley uses its portion to further its mission to promote, through education, the appreciation, distribution, and enjoyment of fine arts and crafts. Expend energy Prior to leaving for work or school, pet parents can help pets expend some energy so they’re more inclined to sleep during the day. The Animal Behavior College suggests an extra 20 minutes of walking each day may be enough to tire out most breeds. Working dogs, such as shepherds, pointers and setters, may need 40 or more minutes to burn off energy. Cat owners can play with their cats indoors, but generally cats will lounge around during the day anyway.

Dandy has a wild and crazy personality. He isn’t into people but loves to stir it up at the cat house with the other cats. This guy will need positive attention, patience, and a loving home that doesn’t push him to do things he is uncomfortable doing. He is not a lap cat, and might need an experience cat owner. Angus was so scared when he arrived at the shelter that he had to be carried around wherever he went. With time, treats, and cheerleading, he’s discovered that the shelter oor is not, in fact, lava. He’s surprisingly quiet and keeps a very tidy kennel. Angus is affectionate, loves to be snuggled, and adores other dogs. at541-813-1717workwww.CurryPilot.com
