Board cancels Monarch Festival Planning underway for return in 2021 THE PILOT Add the 3rd Annual Monarch Festival to the growing list of events canceled in Curry County due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Board of Directors of Brookings Oregon Monarch Advocates (BOMA)
made the announcement public last week. The BOMA board “has been closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19, and notably Governor Kate Brown’s announcement that all large gatherings including festivals remain off-limits through at least
September. Therefore, BOMA has decided, with deep sadness, to cancel the 2020 3rd Annual Brookings Monarch Festival,” stated board president Dennis Triglia. The festival was scheduled for Sept. 5 in Azalea Park.
“Concerns and state regulations and guidelines associated with this novel coronavirus pandemic made the event no longer viable this year,” Triglia said. “It is our sincere regret that all of us who so love this festival, especially the children, their parents and the many monarch butterfly enthusiasts, will not get to enjoy the Monarch
Festival this year.” Planning is underway for the festival to return in 2021. “We will be back though,” Triglia stated. “We look forward to seeing everyone at the September 2021 Monarch Festival. Until then, we will be planning smaller venues and events to celebrate what we hope will be another landmark year for the Brook-

ings Monarchs.” To follow what BOMA is working on you can “Like” them on Facebook at “BOMA 97415 (Brookings Oregon Monarch Advocates).” Nearly every major event in Curry County has been canceled, including the Curry County Fair and events at Port of Brookings Harbor.

HARBOR — Jesus “Zeus” Zamora was ready to strike out on his own and open Accent Barber. He secured a spot in the green building on Lower Harbor Road that is also home to Mountain View Custom Motorcycles and Rebel Ink Tattoo and was preparing his grand opening. And, then Gov. Kate Brown ordered everyone to shelter in place on March 23 and deemed
hair and nail salons and barbershops nonessential businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, effectively stalling Zamora’s opening for two months. Zamora, who had a chair at Tangles Salon and Barbery in Brookings, was effectively unemployed. “I went from being nervous stepping out on my own, away from the comfort zone that Tangles provided me,” Zamora said. “Then they are shut down and I can’t go back to them and
I can’t go forward. They are hurting, I’m hurting and we are all waiting. “My savings went away in those two months that I could not work,” he said. Accent Barber opened on Friday, May 15, the first day of Phase I for reopening Oregon. Zamora worked a long day and cut 13 people’s hair and he’s been booked solid ever since. “I couldn’t even do a grand opening,” Zamora said. “My plan was to have some tacos, some free beer and soda. Right
now I can’t spend money on those things, I got to catch up on my bills, pay my mortgage, catch up on my car payment. Down the road, I’m going to do a grand opening.” Personal service providers such as hair and nail salons and barbershops were allowed to open in Phase I. The Oregon Health Authority has laid out a five-page list of recommendations and requirements for personal service providers in Phase I, including that See Barber, Page A2
