Oregon Parks Join Wildfire Awareness Push, Offer Campfire Safety Tips
BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
As May marks Wildfire
Awareness Month, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is teaming up with the Oregon Department of Forestry and numerous local, statewide and national partners to underscore the importance of fire safety.
With campfires being a cherished tradition for visitors to Oregon State Parks, OPRD is actively encouraging responsible enjoyment of this activity in permitted areas.
Park officials are urging visitors to prioritize safety by first checking for any campfire restrictions in place before heading out. If campfires are allowed, adhering to a set of crucial safety guidelines and following the
instructions of park rangers is paramount to minimizing the risk of wildfires.
OPRD has outlined seven key tips for ensuring safe and enjoyable campfires:
• Stay Informed: Always verify campfire restrictions at individual Oregon State Parks and be aware of any public fire restrictions implemented statewide.
• Use Designated Fire Rings: Build campfires exclusively within established fire rings at campsites. These rings are strategically located with buffer zones to keep flames away from vegetation.
• Keep Flames Low: Maintain campfire flames at or below knee height, approximately two feet, to significantly reduce the Please see AWARENESS Page 3

Brookings-Harbor High Celebrates Excellence and Graduates

BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
Brookings-Harbor High School is abuzz with recognition as it prepares to send off the Class of 2025. This year's graduation ceremony, held at Lundeen Field in Azalea Park on Saturday, May 31, from 2 to 4 p.m., will not only celebrate the achievements of eighty new graduates but also honor two long-standing pillars of the school community: Teacher of the Year Kristy Kleespies and Staff Person of the Year Tina Peters.
Kristy Kleespies, affectionately known as "Boat" by her students and colleagues, is marking her 35th year of teaching and is set to retire after this academic year. Kleespies, who previously retired in 2022 before returning for an "encore" for several years, has taught a variety of subjects over her extensive career. Most recently, she has been a vital part of the Career Technical Education (CTE) Department, leading both the Health Careers program and the innovative Wildland Firefighting class, a partnership with local firefighting agencies.
City of Brookings Proposes Major Accessibility and Recreation Improvements at Bud Cross Park
BY LINDA LEE
Curry Coastal Pilot
The City of Brookings is excited to announce plans for significant improvements at Bud Cross Park, aimed at creating a welcoming, inclusive and family-friendly day-use area that expands recreational access for all members of the community.
The proposed project is currently under consideration for funding through a grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD).
Bud Cross Park is one of the most frequently used public parks in Brookings, serving as a hub for youth sports; however, it remains the only community park in the city without a designated picnic area or inclusive playground amenities.
This project would change that by transforming an underutilized area of the park into a vibrant

new gathering space.
“This project is exactly the kind of investment our community needs,” said Mayor Isaac Hodges. “Bud Cross Park is an important gathering space and these upgrades will make it even more welcoming and accessible,
especially for families, children and seniors.”
The planned improvements would include a new playground that will offer a variety of features to inspire active and Please see BUD CROSS PARK Page 4

Family Fun: Campfires offer a great opportunity for family time.
Graduation Time: The Brookings-Harbor High School Class of 2025
New Swings: The addition of more swings leads to more play time.
Play Structure: One of the many fun improvements.

Fighting Inflation
I have a suggestion that may help fight inflation. It seems to me that housing and land prices continually rising could be the major factor driving inflation and the need to keep raising the minimum wage which causes retailers to keep raising their prices as well. Trump is the poster boy for the set that wants to make money the easy way - flipping real estate for exorbitant profit even if you already have enough money - even if you see thousands of people homeless and addicted to oxycontin for instance - having short life expectancy there from.
The inflation fighting idea, on a personal and collective level - would be for thousands of these Trump zombies to sell their real estate holdings for less than they paid for them, mobile home parks and apartment complexes included. But this solution would not end there. The new owners would cut the rents they charge

to tenants from what they were when the previous owners were the landlords. Also, the younger generation has to be honest about paying into the Social Security Trust Fund - take jobs or if they insist on being independent contractors - no dishonesty towards the authorities about your income. This will help them to one day be able to get Social Security when over the age of 62. This will help the seniors already getting old age benefits be confident about getting their checks and confident their housing prices will not continually rise because of exorbitant real estate flip out greed.

Following the very successful Veterans Brain Injury Provider workshop and Veterans Community Town hall, we owe a debt of gratitude to all of the presenters, sponsors and community stakeholders. Onto the next project! Although we had
hoped to have a dementia and gambling summit, we are still in the planning phase. However, there’s important information to share with regards to access to Healthcare and dementia:
In a recently published article, “Dementia early sign shows in 'strong urge' for 3 'food cravings“, the Alzheimer's Society further notes: "Most people with behavioral variant FTD are not fully aware of their symptoms. Instead, these changes are often first noticed by the people who are closest to them.
"As a result, people with this type of FTD rarely think they need to seek medical help for their condition. They may refuse to do so if others suggest it. This can cause long delays in getting an accurate diagnosis.
A significant sign of this condition is diminished restraint, leading to inappropriate conduct during meals. The Alzheimer's Society reports that affected individuals might: "Crave sweet, fatty foods or car-

In another article a medical advancement was announced, “First blood test for Alzheimer's in US from June, starting at 50 hospitals”.
The Food and Drug Administration cleared the blood test to help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease last week, potentially making it easier to find and treat patients with the memory-robbing disease that affects nearly 7 million Americans.
The test was cleared for use in people at least 55 years old and who exhibit signs of the disease. It is designed to detect amyloid, a protein that can build up in the brain and is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia in the elderly.

Brookings resident Vera Anderson passed on to heaven on May 19, 2025 at the age of 104.

In Loving Memory of Kerie Schaefer Kerasia Landrum-Schaefer passed away on May 12th, 2025 from natural causes. She was born November 30th, 1960 to Rodney and Katina Landrum in Pensacola, Florida. Her father was in the service in her early years, moving his family all around the country. She settled in Brookings for her senior year of high school with family friends. There she met the love of her life and best friend Robert (Bob) Schaefer. They married the following year in 1980 and were set to celebrate their 45th anniversary on May 17th. Kerie is survived by her husband Bob, her son Chris and his wife Doris Schaefer, and her daughter Kacy and her husband Colin Kimball. Kerie deeply loved her children, and her grandchildren; Zoie Schaefer, Romynn Schaefer, Lincoln Kimball, Darren Hodges, and Austin Hodges. Kerie loved horses, riding quads with Bob, spending time with her family, playing at the casino with Kacy and Betty Schaefer, chatting with Zoie and Romynn on face-time, and playing with Lincoln. She was a strong woman with an infectious laugh, open heart, and a goofy personality. Those that knew her will more than miss her goofiness, infectious laugh, forgiving open heart, and strong passionate personality. A small family remembrance was arranged.

chance of ash and embers being carried by the wind into nearby trees or dry vegetation.
• Water is Essential: Always have a readily available water source nearby to extinguish campfires thoroughly. Douse the flames with water and diligently stir the embers to ensure complete extinguishment, as lingering heat can persist in ash and wood debris.
• Beach Fire Best Practices: When permitted, build beach campfires only on open sand, well away from driftwood and any vegetation. Extinguish beach fires by slowly pouring water to avoid scattering hot sand. Importantly, never use sand to put out a beach fire, as it can insulate the coals, keeping them dangerously hot for an extended period. Detailed beach fire rules can be found on the Oregon State Parks website.
• Propane Fire Ring Guidelines: For propane fire rings, ensure usage in areas clear of vegetation and overhanging branches. Regulations for propane
fire rings can vary based on local conditions, so it's crucial to consult with park staff.
• Shared Responsibility: Ensure everyone in your campsite, including children, understands and is familiar with campfire safety procedures. Never leave a campfire unattended, even for a brief moment, as accidental fires can ignite quickly. While education remains the primary focus for rule enforcement, park rangers do have the authority to issue Class A violations, carrying a presumptive fine of up to $400, for significant or repeated violations. Campfire regulations are formally outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules. In a related safety measure, OPRD reminds visitors that explosives and fireworks are strictly prohibited within state parks and along the ocean shore. These items pose a significant danger to visitors, wildlife, and the natural landscape, particularly in crowded areas where high winds and flammable vegetation can exacerbate the inherent risks associated with fireworks.
Tina Peters, the Activities and Athletics Secretary, is also a long-time district employee, completing her 26th year with the Brookings-Harbor School District. Both Kleespies and Peters were selected for their respective honors through a vote conducted among the all students and staff, typically held in late winter or early spring.
Ms. Kleespies recently recognized six students for completing their Allied Health Certification: Danielle Dotson, Joseph Freeman Goodell, Rayna Hayes, Kamryn Koepnick, Abigayl Taylor and Lillian Walker.
This rigorous certification involves earning seventeen college credits through Southwestern Oregon Community College, completing courses such as Medical Terminology 1 & 2, Body Structures 1 & 2 (Anatomy), Health Occupations and Medical Law and Ethics. This significant accomplishment provides students with a strong foundation for healthcare careers and can even boost
their chances of acceptance into nursing programs. The certified students were presented with stethoscopes at the BHHS Academic Achievement Night on May 15th.
The Class of 2025 boasts impressive academic achievements. Avery Nidiffer and Lucas Vanderlip have been named Valedictorians, while Lillian Walker earned the title of Salutatorian.
Additionally, ten students are graduating with Honors Diplomas, a testament to their dedication to challenging coursework, including advanced mathematics, science and college-level dual credit courses.
The Honors Diploma recipients are: Devan Downing, River Harris, Rayna Hayes, Owen Kolp, Elizabeth Love, Abbigail Phillippe, Daisy Sandefur, Lily Sandefur, Aleena Solomon, and Noah Speir.
Notably, Noah Speir also achieved the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy, passing the statewide exam in Spanish during his junior year. This official state verification recognizes a student's proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in
their home language or any additional language beyond English. "We are excited to honor them and hear their speeches at graduation this year,” said Nancy Raskaus-

Southwestern Oregon Community College Offers Free GED® and Adult Basic Education This Summer
BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
Southwestern Oregon Community College
(SWOCC) is providing a significant opportunity for local residents this summer by offering free GED and

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. These tuition-free courses are designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills to successfully pass the GED exam and to enhance foundational skills for entry into college or various career training programs.
and its Curry Campus in Brookings, ensuring accessibility for students across the region. Recognizing the diverse needs of its community, SWOCC will also offer these valuable classes via the Zoom platform, providing a flexible learning option for those unable to attend in person.
The GED test has a rich history, originating in 1942 during World War II to address the educational needs of returning service members. Initially established for veterans in 1945, civilian access followed in 1947.

By enrolling in these classes, students can forge a direct pathway towards higher education, specialized training and in-demand jobs within the region. The college emphasizes its commitment to serving as a crucial link for Oregonians seeking to advance their education and employment prospects without a high school diploma.
Classes will be held live and in person at SWOCC's Coos Campus in Coos Bay
Since then, the GED has undergone several revisions to align with the evolving demands of higher education and the modern workforce, ensuring it reflects the knowledge and skills expected of high school graduates.
Oregon's High School Equivalency Program, overseen by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission's (HECC) Office of Community Colleges and Workforce Development (CCWD), administers the GED® process statewide. This program offers individuals aged 18 and older the chance to earn a GED credential, opening doors to new opportunities.
It's noteworthy that while school districts and other organizations may offer GED preparation for students as young as 16, SWOCC's free summer program focuses on adults seeking to gain their high school equivalency. The HECC supports these initiatives across Oregon's 17 community colleges, various community pro-
grams, and over seventy testing sites. The summer term for these GED and ABE classes will run from June 23rd to August 14th, with sessions scheduled Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Interested individuals are encouraged to register for orientation and classes by visiting: https://swoccapce.org/ For any inquiries, the Adult & Pre-College Education department can be reached via email or phone at: apce@socc.edu 541-888-1593. This free program represents a vital opportunity for residents of Southwestern Oregon to invest in their future and achieve their educational and career goals.

inclusive play, including climbing elements, a slide, accessible ground-level activities, a sensory board and swings.
One special swing will allow an adult and child to swing together while facing each other, creating a fun and meaningful connection. The entire play area will be finished with a rubberized safety surface, providing a safe, comfortable and accessible space for children of all abilities to explore and enjoy. There will also be new ADA-accessible asphalt pathways that connect the new picnic area to other park amenities as well as twenty new shade trees that will be planted to improve comfort and aesthetics.
A paved parking lot, where the existing gravel parking lot is on the north side of the park, will be added and have a vegetated filter strip for stormwater management
“These upgrades will make Bud Cross Park more inclusive, more accessible and more enjoyable for all visitors,” said City Manager Tim Rundel. “It’s part of our broader effort to improve public spaces and invest in the quality of life in Brookings.”
The project is strongly supported by the community. In a recent public survey, 94.3% of respondents said they support or strongly support the proposed improvements.
Local organizations including the Brookings-Harbor Little League, Wild Rivers Soccer Club and the Chamber of Commerce

have submitted letters of support, highlighting the importance of this project to families and community members of all ages.
“This area serves as a central gathering space for families, especially those watching youth sports,” said Steve Kerr, Chair of the Brookings Parks and Recreation Commission,
emphasizing the project’s importance. “Right now, the lack of accessibility creates real challenges for many community members and with Bud Cross being the only community park in Brookings without a play structure, we have a clear gap in recreational opportunities for young children. These improve-
ments will make the park more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.”
The city has applied for funding from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to help bring this vision to life. If awarded, the grant would cover a significant portion of the construction costs. Matching funds will come from the city’s accrued Parks System Development Charges. The improvements are slated for next year. Oregon overdose deaths have gone down, but they’re still high
MIA MALDONADO
Oregon Capital Chronicle
Overdose deaths in Oregon went down 22% in 2024, the Oregon Health Authority announced Friday, May 16.
The decrease in overdose deaths follows a nationwide trend of declining overdose deaths. In 2024, there were about 80,400 drug overdose deaths in the country — 26.9% fewer than the 110,000 overdose deaths in 2023, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While strengthened substance use treatment infrastructure, naloxone distribution and education, prevention programs and changes in fentanyl supply are contributing to the decrease in overdose deaths, Oregon’s overdose deaths rates are still too high, Oregon Public Health state epidemiologist Dr. Dean Sidelinger said in a news release.
Substance use and over-
dose deaths remain a public health crisis in Oregon.
The 1,480 overdose deaths in Oregon in 2024 were still more than overdose deaths rates during the pre-pandemic years. “We must continue to work together to keep people safe and build treatment and recovery support for people struggling with substance use disorder,” Sidelinger said.
The state of Oregon aims to decrease overdose death rates by investing in:
• Save Lives Oregon Harm Reduction Clearinghouse: This program is working to respond to the fentanyl crisis. It provides more than 360 agencies and organizations in Oregon with no-cost naloxone, infection prevention and wound care kits.
• Opioid treatment programs: There are 27 opioid treatment programs in Oregon, two medication units and four mobile units. Oregon also expanded telehealth for medications for opioid use disorder.
• Increasing residential treatment capacity: The state of Oregon is developing 260 beds dedicated to substance use disorder services and 41 beds dedicated to withdrawal management.
• Peer support systems: Under these programs, individuals in Oregon struggling with substance use receive support, guidance and encouragement from individuals who have experience with recovery.
• Behavioral Health Regional Networks: Funded through cannabis tax revenue and the Drug Treatment and Recovery Services Funds which accounted for $414 million between 2022-2025, these networks provide screening and assessment, harm reduction, housing, substance use disorder treatment and employment services.

A Petition for Probate has been filed by: KIM M. HOLBEN, in the Superior Court of California, County of: Del Norte.
The petition for probate requests that: KIM M. HOLBEN be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, to be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This Authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: June 6, 2025
Time: 10:00am Dept.: 2 Address of the Court: 450 H Street, Crescent City, CA 95531
If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
