Wildlife Center of the North Coast Reminds Community to Respect Baby Wildlife During Spring and Summer
[Astoria, OR]
– As the Oregon coast welcomes the vibrant return of spring and summer, the Wildlife Center of the North Coast is highlighting the importance of respecting and protecting baby wildlife, particularly birds, during this critical period. From April to September, the region experiences a surge in wildlife births, often referred to as "baby season," which brings both joy and challenges for local wildlife.
During this time, many young animals, including birds, are vulnerable to human interference. It is crucial for the community to understand that finding a baby animal alone does not necessarily mean it is orphaned. In
fact, many species, such as birds and mammals, often leave their young temporarily for safety or to forage for food, returning when it is safe to do so. Wildlife Center of the North Coast encourages residents and visitors to respect wildlife by following these guidelines:
● Leave Them Alone: Unless an animal is clearly injured or in distress, it is best to leave it where you find it. This includes baby birds that may have fallen from nests but are not injured.
● Support Conservation Efforts: Help protect endangered species like the Western Snowy Plover by respecting nesting areas and following guidelines set
by local conservation agencies.
● Educate Yourself: Learn about local wildlife and their needs during this sensitive period. Understanding bird migration patterns and nesting habits can help minimize human impact.
WCNC has been dedicated to promoting compassion, empathy, and respect for all life since 1997 by providing wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education in our community.

After his long career as editor, director, producer, and film studio executive, he and his wife Lorraine retired to Brookings in 1983. Both did much to benefit the city in projects such as Azalea Park and the library. Williams lived in Brookings for over 40 years, passing away in 2015 at the age of 103.

Oregon is calling on its residents to join the annual Oregon Spring Cleanup, a statewide initiative aimed at beautifying the region and restoring natural habitats and spearheaded
by Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism (SOLVE).
Annually, SOLVE recruits, organizes, and guides volunteers through thousands of environmental projects and litter cleanup events to address a broader range of threats to Oregon's health, livability,
and economic viability.
Across the state, they unite diverse communities to improve the health and safety of neighborhoods and natural areas, including the coast, rivers, parks, and forests, according to its website.
With over one hundred events already listed on the SOLVE website, opportunities abound for individuals, families, and community groups to participate. Projects range from litter cleanups to habitat restoration, spanning diverse locations including Portland and Southwest Washington, the entire Or-
egon Coast, the Willamette National Forest, Southern Oregon, and even Eastern Oregon’s Baker City.
“Earth Month is a great reminder to take action and continue to enhance our communities,” said Kristen Sheeran, PGE’s vice president of policy and resource planning. “This Earth Month, we’re ready to roll up our sleeves with SOLVE and all of the volunteer partners to make a lasting impact on Oregon’s natural spaces.”
PGE, a longtime partner of SOLVE, continues to champion environmental volunteerism, underscoring
its commitment to environmental stewardship.
How to Get Involved:
• Sign Up: Find a volunteer event near you and register yourself or a group at volunteer.solveoregon.
org/.
• Lead Your Own Event: SOLVE provides resources, supplies, and disposal funds to facilitate hosting personal cleanup projects.
• Join the Trash Bag Challenge: Rally your school, company, or community group to participate in the new Trash Bag Challenge, encouraging friendly competition and
community pride. Learn more at solveoregon.org/ challenge.
SOLVE, in partnership with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) and with support from Knife River, has established seven coastal supply hubs to reduce the use of single-use plastics and streamline coastal cleanups. Easter Sunday falls on April 20 this year. As they have done for last 45 years, Smith River Lily growers Rob and Kara Miller take a huge sigh of relief after thousands of boxes of Easter Lilies reached their destination for families who celebrate this holiday. The Millers’ Easter Lily farm is Dahlstrom and Watt bulb farm. Indeed, the Easter Lily greenhouse grower and field bulb farmer is just one of the of the depleting roster of Lily growers remaining in Del Norte County; the others are Palmer/ Westbrook and United Lily Growers: the Crockett family. This trio harvests and distributes the bulbs to greenhouses across the United States and Canada to flower for Easter. “80 percent of the lilies in North America and Canada come from the Smith River Valley. This totals more than $6 million annually,” says Rob Miller. Miller underscored the trials and travails of producing this magnificent product which must be available in the store or greenhouse by Easter Sunday. The things that can go wrong can fill a telephone book.
“It’s what I do,” harkens Miller. “…and it’s tough.”
Lilies and Easter have been around Del Norte County since the
reasons for the objection at least two court days before the matter is scheduled to be heard and must appear at the hearing to show cause why the petition should not be granted. If no written objection is timely filed, the court may grant the petition without a hearing.
NOTICE
late 40’S. In 1966, Bob Miller, Sr. bought into Dahlstrom and Watt when Cecil Watt retired. 12 years later, Rob Miller came out of UC Davis and joined his Dad in owning and managing Dahlstrom and Watt. Rob and Kara’s son Kurt is the greenhouse manager.
Over the decades, demand for the all white, trumpet flower, religious symbol honoring Jesus Christ has been slowly decreasing.
“In 1966, there were 26 lily growers from Salem and McKinleyville. Now, there are just three,” says Miller. In total, the trio grows about 200 acres on Del Norte County. Rob and Kara operate their farm on six acres of covered greenhouses.
The life of a lily at Easter is perhaps a 10 to 20 day flower, but the bulb can be replanted and the flower will re-bloom, next year.
Bob Miller, Sr. and family came from the Mid-West, where he was a professor doing Horticulture research at Ohio State University. Senior passed away two years ago at 92.
The growers in the greenhouse anticipate everything culminating on Easter Sunday and that date changes annually.
Rob explained the Lily cycle. The cycle begins with bulb planting in the Fall. Both small bulbs and/ or
scales are planted. Scales are the specialized leaves designed for food storage that are attached to the basal plate which together make up the bulb. When separated and planted, a small bulb will grow at its base. It can take two to three years for a saleable bulb to be produced. Each year after planting, everything is dug up and sorted, the commercials are packed and sold and everything else is replanted for another year of growth. When the plant is ready, it is packed and shipped to greenhouse growers around the nation who force the bulbs to produce flowers for Easter. The natural cycle of the plant blooms in July in the fields in Smith River. What can go wrong in the process? Plenty. Putting small pieces of fleshy bulbs into the soil in late summer and hoping one has something amazing A year later after 80 inches of rain, soil and airborne fungi, bacteria, nematodes (worms), freezes, gophers and government oversight is truly an act of faith and a highly regarded agricultural methodology. The Triplicate asked Rob, no spring chicken himself, why he toils with the Easter Lily, he responded, “ It’s what I do.”
And Rob Miller does it so very well. Happy Easter, everyone.
The interview was taped in 2007 at the Chetco Playhouse, conducted by Lon Goddard, filmed by Claire Willard, with Master of Ceremonies Mike Moran. Marilyn Hart, who has been involved with the annual “Elmo Williams Day”
since its start in 2017 and is currently working on the project to preserve Elmo’s interviews on the Hawaii State Archives website, will host both of these free events. Coffee, tea, water and Lorraine’s famous cake will be served.

SOLVE continues to be a leading force in environmental volunteerism, mobilizing thousands of volunteers across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
SOLVE started as an all-volunteer-driven organization to address litter and vandalism throughout the state. They were founded in 1969 by a charge from eco-pioneering Governor Tom McCall, who believed it was every Oregon citizen's inherent right to enjoy and take responsi-
bility for the places where we live, work, and play, as listed on their website. Registration is now open, with events scheduled from April 12th to 22nd, culminating in a major cleanup effort on Saturday, April 19th. The Oregon Spring Cleanup 2025 is made possible by the generous support of PGE and other sponsors, including AAA, CareOregon, Clean Water Services, Fred Meyer, Holman Enterprises, KOIN 6, The Oregonian, Lam Research Corporation, Metro, Lithia Driveway, Intel, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Swire Coca-Cola, The Standard, and PepsiCo.

As head of production at 20th Century Fox, Williams received a second Academy Award for “The French Connection” as it won the Oscar for Best Picture. Williams was also nominated for an Oscar for his editing in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” for Walt Disney. He did not capture that prize but received something he said he valued more than his Oscars, a Mousecar, Disney’s Oscar equivalent. Williams also worked on such famous films as “The Longest Day,” “Tora! Tora! Tora!,” “Cleopatra,” and “Those Magnificent Mern in Their Flying Machines.”
It is worth noting that the Wild Rivers Film Festival in Brookings, entering its third year August 14th to 17th, has named its award for the most promising new filmmaker, “The Elmo Award.”
In partnership with the Chetco Community Public Library, there will be a showing of “The Amazing Adventure” at the library in Brookings at 2 p.m. on the 27th. The 61-minute film was Cary Grant’s first starring role and the first major film Elmo edited. The movie will be followed by a short taped-interview about the film and the early days of the British film industry.
