3D mammography now available at Curry Health

The

Curry Health Network announced they completed the first exam using 3D technology at Curry Medical Center in Brookings on Dec. 21.

Combined with superior imaging technology, routine mammograms are the best defense against breast

cancer because regular screenings make it easier to detect cancer in its early stages.

A 3D mammogram, also known as breast tomosynthesis, or “tomo”, creates a three-dimensional image of the breast and shows the tissue in thin, one-millimeter layers, allowing a better chance to detect cancer hiding behind overlapping tissue.

“The goal of mammography is

to find breast cancer as early in its development as possible. Studies have shown that 3D mammography can increase detection by up to 40%, and that 73.7% of breast cancers found with 3D mammography were 1 cm or smaller,” said CHN director of diagnostic imaging Corinna Silvius.

Dr. Jessica Carlson, CHN’s general surgeon, is a breast cancer

survivor and outspoken advocate for screening mammograms. She said she knows well the value of the high quality, detailed images produced by tomo.

“I believe my particular cancer may have been missed if I didn’t travel to receive a 3D mammogram.

It is powerful technology that can often detect cancers at earlier stages and pick up abnormalities that

might be missed on other mammograms,” Carlson said. “I’m pleased that our patients can now benefit from 3D mammography without the need to travel long distances.”

There are other benefits, according to Silvius. Tomo is found to be reliable and accurate, she said.

Disabled woman's case against Brookings top story of 2022

Curry County was shocked by many tragic stories in 2022, and the community was split by heavily-debated elections, but the top story in 2022 was a little different.

In March, news broke that a disabled woman had been awarded $300,000 from the city of Brookings after she filed a lawsuit claiming she was denied her rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The lawsuit was filed after Bookings police arrested Jennifer

Gayman following a extremely-low-speed chase after she refused to stop riding home on her mobility scooter.

The Oregon Court of Appeals sided with Gayman, and Brookings agreed to pay her $300,000, issue a public apology and require police to undergo ADA training.

The story was selected for the

2 - Brookings teen murdered In July, Brookings police began to investigate after a 16-year-old teen was found lying dead in a road.

The county's Major Crimes Task Force was brought in to assist in the investigation.

After several weeks, another teen, 18-year-old Francisco Villegas-Lopez was arrested and charged with murder in the case.

Brookings' author releases his second children's book

A long-time Brookings resident recently had his second book published.

Jonathan Gerhig’s latest is a children’s book titled, "The Watermelon Patch: A Tale of unlikely Friendship." Gehrig said he brought the characters and the heart-warming message of Watermelon Patch to life for his grandchildren and other children to enjoy.

“It's about teaching children, and everyone, not to judge people and teaching them not to bully,” Gehrig said.

The book follows Artie Apple, Barney Banana and Ozzy Orange on a journey through the watermelon patch. Readers learn that everyone needs a friend and everyone can be a friend.

Prior to becoming an author, Gehrig worked in the timber industry for 35 years. Twenty-one of those years were with South Coast Lumber and Pacific Wood Laminates. In his fastpaced career, he did everything from cleanup, millwright, quality control, supervisor and superintendent. He left his career in the timber industry to become a caretaker for his parents.

Gehrig said he made a promise to his father and mother that he would write two books.

One about caring for them and all the experiences they had – which he did in his first book “A son’s Promise.” In his second book, “The Watermelon Patch,” Gehrig features three characters his dad created when he and his siblings were young.

When he’s not writing, Gehrig loves video-chatting with his family and hiking on the coast or in the mountains.

4 - McKay's opens in Harbor

After months of delays, McKay's Market announced early in the year it was close to opening in Harbor.

The news brought full circle the McKay's story as it had a store at the site when the shopping center opened in 1985. McKay's left in

2005, but announced it was returning to Harbor.

5 - Election 2022

Voters in Curry County helped decide a lot of race and issues in 2022, but one race took center stage – a three-person race for county commissioner.

In the May primary, Beth Barker-Hidalgo almost pulled off the upset, finishing first among the three candidates, but Brad Alcorn kept the race close enough to force a runoff.

In November, the tables turned as Alcorn took the early lead and coasted to victory, winning the seat with 63% of the vote. Alcorn will replace Chris Paasch, who chose not to run for re-election.

Brookings City Manager

Janell Howard was abruptly placed on administrative leave late in the summer, and it was later revealed she had been arrested on theft charges for allegedly stealing from Fred Meyers.

The city of Brookings spent months trying to decide what to do as the council hired two different city manager pro tem leaders.

At one point the council voted to terminate Howard before a later vote backed off that idea.

As the year ends, Howard remains on administrative leave, and no final decision has been made.

separate overlapping tissue, there is up to a 40 percent decrease in the number of patients requiring follow-up or biopsies with results that are ultimately found to be negative.

“Not only does the much lower rate of screening recalls save patients time and money, but it also saves them unnecessary anxiety,” Silvius said. “So, too, earlier diagnosis can help avoid more aggressive treatments often needed later in the disease progression.”

Ginny Williams, CHN CEO, agreed.

“The benefits of 3D mammography simply cannot be ignored and we’re excited to be able to offer the service locally. We would also be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the community’s support of this technology through the efforts of the Curry Health Foundation

and player partic-ipation in the 2021 Golf Fore Health Tournament that raised more than $20,000 to help with the purchase. We’re very grateful,” Williams said.

According to The American Cancer Society, women should receive annual mammograms be-ginning at age 40, and women with a family history of breast cancer should talk to their prima-ry care provider, who may recommend screening at an earlier age.

Patients with a primary care provider who wish to schedule a 3D screening mammogram can call 541.412.2098. Diagnostic mammograms or any mammogram for symptomatic patients require an order from a provider.

Most Oregonians who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will receive emergency allotments in January.

The federal government has approved emergency allotments every month since March 2020. This gives SNAP recipients additional support during the COVID-19 pandemic. These emergency benefits are a

temporary support that Oregon can provide because of the federal COVID-19 public health emergency.

Because the federal government approved these emergency benefits for January, Oregon will also be able to issue them in February 2023. However, the emergency benefits are expected to end when the federal public health emergency ends.

In January, approximately 421,000 SNAP households will receive approximately $71 million in extra food benefits in addition to their regular SNAP benefits.

“We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to get enough healthy food for themselves and their families,” said Jana McLellan, interim director of the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Self-Sufficiency Programs.

Opinion: Was 51-49 Ever Going to Be Safe for Democrats?

If anyone needed a reminder of how vital the Georgia Senate runoff election was, it hit soon after. Arizona “Democrat” Kyrsten Sinema announced she was leaving the party and would sit as an independent. She did not specify whether she would join Bernie Sanders and Angus King, the other two independent senators, in caucusing with the Democrats.

Meanwhile, Georgia is mercifully over.

The Georgia runoff went as it should. Thinking they were putting forward an undefeatable state superman in Herschel Walker, the GOP failed to do any due diligence on Walker. With every week that passed in the campaign, it became clear that he was a historically weak and deeply inappropriate candidate.

Walker (or, more accurately, the GOP machine) made the race close enough to force the runoff and kept the runoff itself far closer than it ever should have been. But the race is over, and Rafael Warnock, through his victory, made what we thought was the final Senate tally — 51 to 49. Oops.

We all know that in a 50-50 Senate, as the one ending has been, the tie-breaking vote goes to the vice president, Kamala Harris, a Democrat. So why was Georgia’s result important for at least the next two years, until the 2024 election, which will also have 33 senators up for re-election?

In part, it’s because the Senate may prove to be more unpredictable than usual over the next two years. West Virginia’s Joe Manchin and Sinema will be up for re-election in 2024. Theirs are Senate votes the Democrats have not always felt to have been comfortably held over the last two years. So, a 51-49 Senate allowed for the defection of one of these votes on any given issue. Sinema’s news presented the Democrats with the worst-case scenario of a return to a functional 50-50 on many issues.

There is also an important optical issue that would have come along with 51-49.

It’s one thing for either Manchin, Sinema or any other Democratic senator to try to make a stand on an important issue where they know that the vote they’re dissenting/ breaking on would have caused a 50-50 tie-breaking vote. Now, if Sinema votes with Republicans on any issue, all it takes to give the GOP the win is a Manchin defec-

tion, which is always seemingly up for grabs.

There is definitely an important psychological factor that, until today, would have given the Democrats a lot more margin for error over the next two years than one simple vote would seem to indicate. That is the notion of momentum, which has been discussed extensively since the November election.

Both parties, given a choice of whether to end the midterm election season with a win, or a loss, would choose a win. That’s what the Democrats caught in Georgia, then lost with Sinema’s defection.

While pundits will spend the next two years making excuses, many of which will be valid ones, why the Democrats won and the Republicans lost in Georgia, the only thing that could have negated the reality that the Democrats are ending this election season with that great intangible — momentum — happened. While some will argue that this doesn’t constitute a GOP win, even a tie, momentum-wise, is very disappointing to the Democrats.

Momentum is something we don’t talk about enough in politics because it’s difficult to quantify. Momentum can often make a political party more hopeful than it would have otherwise been as it scans the horizon. When we look at the midterm elections, from the prediction of many pundits that we would have not just a red wave but a red tsunami — and the eventual end result that was quite favorable for the Democrats — you can’t help but feel deflated if you are a Democrat.

As to Georgia, if there is a lesson to be learned, and I believe there is, it is a straightforward one: Do not put forward candidates for any office who are fundamentally and deeply flawed.

That needs to be the ultimate lesson with Herschel Walker. For as outstanding and unique as he was as a football player, he has proven to be equally disappointing as a person. This is not the kind of political role model that should be held out to anyone. From what has been reported over the campaign about his past to what became an obvious inability to serve the people of Georgia well and properly as a senator, this is a nomination the Republicans genuinely wish they had back.

Beacon Broadband debt responsibility

For those supporting 'we will wait for Beacon Broadband's anticipated excellent customer service', or "going where no one else has gone": Have you considered the following?

Are attributes like these worth the financial risk of the Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative (you/us) going into more debt to expand its business-model beyond its core business? Core business being the delivery of electric power in an efficient and affordable manner - not being an internet provider.

Membership in the cooperative makes us, the membership, ultimately responsible for the loans being made to sustain and promote Beacon Broadband Incorporated (BBI) as it attempts to compete against the core businesses of Spectrum/Charter, Ziply, Starlink, and other much larger enterprises.

I have little doubt that BBI's current customer service is 'excellent'. This excellence, however, is wholly dependent on the fiber optic infrastructure supplied by Ziply from the north and Spectrum/Charter from the south.

"Going where no one else has gone" and 'internet for everyone' has similar appeal to having a sheriff's department that provides county-wide 24 hour patrols and service. In the case of the sheriff's department such funding endeavors are voted upon by the citizens of Curry County. In the case of BBI six individuals made no less than an additional $60 million dollar debt-decision for you and me. These six individuals have systematically made the details of their decision secret - hiding behind generalities couched in terms of "we studied for 2 1/2 years".

Franchise fee or Mafia like tax

The Brookings City council is discussing adding a ‘”franchise fee” to Brookings city residents electric bills-up to 7%. The CCEC provides the poles, lines and maintenance to provide electricity to the city of Brookings residents at NO cost to the City. Yet the City council is contemplating charging CCEC a franchise fee up to 7% just to allow them to provide us electricity I.E. a Mafia like tax to be able to do business in Brookings. A similar fee is being imposed on the 2 internet providers now installing internet services to Brookings residents to allow them to do business in Brookings.

I do not know if other businesses have to pay such a fee to be able to do business in Brookings. This is a tax without citizens approval If you approve of this tax DO nothing but if you think this is unfair to have $100-$200 or more added to your electric bill annually then contact our city councilors.

Make America Yours Again

the world gets just a little bit stranger every day and this is NOT conspiracy theory or right wing news.

This is merely connecting the dots, that when you put all the pieces together, you see just as you would in a thousand-piece puzzle how they all fit. We should have listened even more intently when they told us that this was a battle for the “soul” of America. It was. And if we have any hope of reversing a trend that will have us all very soon wishing this were not true, it’s time we held those we elected accountable.

The true enemy of this democracy is the global oligarchy and the puppet government that now runs pretty much everything. Dig a little. Look beyond the headlines or what you are fed to consume on social networking, on mass media and even Google and see for yourself how much of what you value is currently being eroded and undermined by those who’ve taken power. Only if we stand united and say no to what’s happening, may we hope to see the America we love back again. Take a deep breath.

Don’t hate your neighbor. Let’s find ways to work together to solve the real problem, not what they would keep us busy thinking about while they go about the business of stealing your future.

Public Notices 999

PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing will be held before the City Council on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Brookings City Hall, 898 Elk Drive, Brookings.

A remand hearing on appeal of File No. APP-1-20, CUP-220 to consider the Land Use Board of Appeal (LUBA) remand to the City’s approval of a Conditional Use Permit to establish a 14-unit residential care facility at 17212 Passley; Assessor’s Map 4014-36BA, Tax Lot 02200; zoned R-1-6 (Single Family Residential). The subject property is owned by Brett Kemp. This hearing will consider only the following issues which were remanded by LUBA: 1. Whether Highway 101 and Dawson Road are adequate in width and degree of improvement to handle the quantity and kind of vehicular traffic that would be generated by the proposed use; 2. Whether the driveway is adequate for the quantity and kind of traffic that would be generated by the proposed use; 3. Whether the sidewalk network is adequate to ensure minimal adverse impacts on the pedestrian access enjoyed by adjoining properties; and 4. Whether drainage issues caused by the proposed use will have minimal impacts on adjoining properties. Criteria used to decide this matter is found in Chapter 17 of the Brookings Municipal Code (BMC), specifically Sections 17.136.050(C)(2) and 17.136.050(C)(3). This is a Quasi-judicial hearing, and the City Council will make a decision on the matter. The public is invited to attend. Testimony will be limited to the four issues remanded by LUBA, as listed above. All persons wishing to address the remanded issues will have an opportunity to do so in person at the hearing or by submitting written evidence to the Brookings Planning Department at the address above and received no later than 4 pm the date of the hearing. If you wish to speak at the hearing, you will be asked to sign in and afforded five (5) minutes to speak. Failure to raise an issue accompanied by statements or evidence sufficient to afford the City Council and parties an opportunity to respond to the issues precludes appeal to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA).

A copy of the application, all documents and evidence submitted on behalf of the applicant is available for public inspection at no cost at the Brookings Planning Department, 898 Elk Drive, Brookings, OR. The staff report prepared in this case will be available seven days prior to the hearing. Copies of documents may be obtained at reasonable cost.

All public meetings are held in accessible locations, auxiliary aids will be provided upon request with advance notification. Please contact 541-469-1103 to make appropriate arrangements or for additional information. TTY 800-735-1232.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date

shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.

If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.

AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 101422-CA. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.

If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 101422-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Merkley, Wyden announce major investments for Oregon’s coastal communities

“As I hold a

resiliency,

said. “The funding package I championed makes significant, targeted investments in small ports and shipyards, boosts Pacific salmon and steelhead recovery, and supports our vital fishing industry, all while taking on the harmful impacts climate chaos is inflicting on our coastal communities. I am excited to see how these huge investments will boost the Oregon Coast for years to come.”

“The past three years of financial challenges trig-

gered by fallout from the public health crisis, have revealed how crucial resilient, year-round economies are to our coastal communities,” Wyden said. “I am proud to support funding that will make significant investments in Oregon’s small ports, our state’s historic fishing industry and the stabilization of the iconic Pacific salmon and steelhead populations.

"Federal dollars are an important first step toward healing marine ecosystems from the harm done by the climate crisis, while also supporting our coastal communities getting a fair shot to compete in the global economy.”

Merkley is the only Oregon member of Congress from either chamber since Senator Mark Hatfield to serve on the Appropriations Committee, which wrote the bill and is considered to be one of the most powerful on Capitol Hill.

He joined the committee in 2013 so that Oregon would have a strong voice in decisions about the investments our nation should be making.

Ocean commercial Dungeness crab season opening delay continues

The ocean commercial Dungeness crab season remains closed until at least Jan. 15, 2023.

Round three of pre-season testing shows crabs still remain too low in meat yield on the southern and northern coasts.

Elevated domoic acid is still detected in some crab viscera (guts).

Additional crab meat yield

and biotoxin testing will occur in the coming weeks. Results help determine which parts of Oregon could open Jan. 15, 2023 or be further delayed.

Targeted to open Dec. 1, Oregon’s ocean commercial Dungeness crab season can be delayed so consumers get a high-quality product and crabs are not wasted. Providing a quality product to

consumers is a high priority for the fishing industry and ODFW.

ODFW tests crabs out of Oregon’s six major crabbing ports in partnership with the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), and the commercial Dungeness crab industry. Tri-state crab quality testing protocol is available online.

Reduce risk of getting, transmitting flu

Cases of respiratory viruses – particularly influenza – continue to put strain on hospitals, so Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is reminding people to take steps that protect themselves and loved ones from infection as holi-

day weekends loom.

“No one wants to spend the holidays in the hospital with flu, RSV or COVID-19,” said Dean Sidelinger, M.D., M.S.Ed., health officer and state epidemiologist at OHA,

and a pediatrician. “Using common-sense approaches for preventing these viruses can keep you safe, and that reduces demand for scarce hospital beds.”

Beau Gilmore, M.D., pediatrician and chief informaticist at Mosaic Medical in central Oregon, shares his thoughts on staying safe. Gilmore also offers advice for parents on how to know when to go to the hospital.

While the percentage of positive RSV tests and resulting hospitalizations declined since peaking in early December, percent positivity and hospitalizations for influenza rapidly increased in the last several weeks.
