Change coming for the Brookings city government

The Brookings City Council announced two changes to the city government during the Special Council Meeting on Monday. Christy Wurster will take over as the pro-tem City Manager, and Isaac Hodges will replace Brad Alcorn on the City Council.

Wurster will take over as pro-tem

City Manager from Gary Milliman, who has been in the role since July.

Milliman, the City Manager in Brookings from 2008 until 2018, assumed the position when the current City Manager, Janell Howard, was placed on administrative leave.

Howard has been the city manager in Brookings since 2018, but the Brookings City Council placed her on paid leave in July. Howard has been under investigation since

September following a criminal theft charge.

Milliman did not comment on Howard but offered insight into Wurster and her qualifications. They worked with each other when Wurster was city manager in Silverton, OR, and had contact through the Oregon City Managers Association.

"I'm familiar with her reputation in the city manager field, which is

excellent," Milliman said. "I recommended her for the position here, and I think she'll do fine."

Milliman also clarified that Alcorn stepped down to prepare for his role as the Curry County Commissioner. Alcorn's term on the city council was designated to continue until January 2025. While Alcorn will take office in January, he felt it necessary to step down from the city council.

Brookings City Council hopes to have Wurster's appointment in effect December 1, with her term as pro-tem manager lasting no longer than six months. Wurster's role will include directing the city budget and finances and managing city records and elections.

Port Orford celebrates small businesses in style

Port Orford was in full holiday swing for Shop Small Saturday.

Locals and visitors came out to shop and hop on and off a free holiday trolley throughout the day in support of local small businesses. The trolley stopped at 16 small businesses along the route.

Everyone who visited one of the participating businesses got a sticker. The more shops each person visited, the more tickets they received for a raffle held later that evening at the crab pot tree lighting ceremony at St. Christopher Episcopal Church.

Coastal Swag was one of more than a dozen businesses that participated in the Shop Small Saturday event. Their cool and eclectic stop was a popular destination along the route.

Coastal Swag co-owner Story Tsetsakis said a lot of local artisans contribute their talents to the store, including youth entrepreneurs that make magnets, cards and other items. Shop owners pride themselves on having unique and useful gift items.

“We definitely have something for everyone and we like to keep it that way,” Tsetsakis said.

The small business owner said it was a busy weekend at Coastal Swag. Santa came to visit on Friday and the shop had a good turn out for

Port Orford begins effort to replace crane

THE PILOT

The Port of Port Orford has published a Request for Proposals to carry out the Port’s Crane Replacement Project. Qualified bidders are encouraged to submit bids to the Port for consideration before the deadline at 4 p.m., January 2, 2023. A copy of the RFP can be found on the Port website’s home page: https://portofportorford.org/ rfp-crane-replacement-project/.

This project is part of the Port’s Redevelopment Plan, which includes plans for a high capacity pump ashore seawater delivery system, a Dock Road strengthening and slope stabilization project, and a Seafood Hub.

The Oregon Transportation Commission approved a $1.6M grant to the Port of Port Orford for its Crane Replacement Project. The total cost of the project is $2.3M, and the Port has secured matching funds from Business Oregon in the form of a $694,000 low interest loan.

The Crane Replacement Project will include two 50-ton cranes, used to launch vessels going to sea

The BHHS volleyball team decided to donate the profits from their annual Pink Night fundraiser in October to Curry Health Foundation. Members of the volleyball team sold special Pink Night t-shirts and 50/50 tickets to support the worthwhile community cause this year. and other seafood product handling equipment. The Port lands an average $5M in ex-vessel value seafood each year, contributing an average of $7M to Oregon’s economy, and employing ~30% of the local workforce in commercial fishing, processing, and related jobs.

High capacity cranes are required due to the Port's open ocean configuration, which necessitates the unique high dock, aka "dolly dock." One benefit of this configuration is the absence of a bar crossing, which allows more safe days for those working at sea.

The two new cranes will provide the redundancy needed to ensure all vessels can be retrieved during deteriorating sea conditions, improving safety for ocean going vessels of all kinds.

The Port Commission chose to pursue funding to replace the existing aging cranes after several years of increased major maintenance and interruptions of vital operations, leading to lost economic opportunity of as much as $2M over the past 5 years, and increasing safety concerns. The Port will contract with a Construction Project Management firm to manage the project, which will include meetings with stakeholders and tenants concerning the dock reconfigurations required for the new equipment.

“We’re excited to secure these funds to upgrade this critical infrastructure for our district citizens and tenants. The implementation of two modernized cranes will provide double the current lifting capacity. This upgrade will result in reduced wear and tear on the equipment, resulting in longer life for the cranes, and the redundancy of having two identical

cranes will enable a continuous maintenance program and enhanced safety," said Pat Cox, port manager

“The doubling of capacity will allow for somewhat longer, larger, and heavier vessels to enjoy our unique offerings. Since the beginning of time, fishermen have graduated to larger boats for increased safety , and production. Many local fishermen, myself included , own permits that allow for substantial increases in size, but port infrastructure has always fallen short of meeting those needs. In the past, highliners have been forced to move their businesses and families to realize that growth. This project is retention , highliner retention, and it's critical to the Port's solvency. Additionally we will work with contractors developing and maintaining the federally mandated offshore wind

energy boon by resupplying and fueling vessels involved in those operations. Port Orford sits smack in the middle of current offshore wind lease areas, making for shorter, quicker and cheaper resupply voyages. Utilizing the unmatched crane capacity and proximity would certainly expedite the completion of Oregon arrays. Shrinking the carbon footprint of a program intended to shrink our carbon footprint , would include efficiency at every opportunity. This project fits the bill. There are 700 other reasons that this is awesome for our community, but I will spare you for now,” said Brett Webb, commercial fisherman and Port Commission vice president.

“We are very excited to get new product hoists. Our product hoist is also in need of replacement,” said Vicki Nowlin with NorCal.

small business Saturday.

Tsetsakis said she appreciated those who support small businesses during the holidays.

“The small businesses are the heart of the community - I believe personally,” she said. “It's little shops that help keep small towns going.”

Coastal Swag owners like to help with school sponsor-

ships and fundraisers, she added.

Pacific Coast Trolley from Brookings had their trolley fully decked out with wreaths and festive lighting.

They took a 20 to 30 minute route that stopped at Coastal Swag and a variety of small businesses on and off Highway 101 for the Shop Small Saturday event.

Restaurants and markets were featured along with small businesses selling collectible knick-knacks, art gal-

leries, florists, beauty items and even pet supplies.

Later that night, the small coastal town also celebrated their fishing and crabbing heritage with their annual Port Orford Crab Pot Tree Lighting.

The party started at 5 p.m. with the tree lighting take place at nautical twilight about 5:30 p.m. Visitors to St. Christopher Episcopal Church were treated with a holiday mug, as well as variety of holiday snacks.

Community members even took part in a holiday sing along.

The tree lighting event was sponsored by The Port Orford Arts Council.

Merkley, Wyden announce $800,000 for rural emergency health care

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that Oregon will receive $801,300 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Emergency Rural Health Care Grant program to support organizations and facilities across Oregon provide vital emergency rural health care and food assistance to rural communities.

“These grants awarded to Oregon will help provide crucial support in ensuring Oregon’s rural families have access to the health care and food on the table they need to

thrive,” said Merkley, a member of the appropriations subcommittee that funds the USDA. “These funds from USDA will help ensure rural Oregon communities get the resources they need to stay healthy.”

“These funds to strengthen health care and fight hunger are lifelines for rural Oregonians counting on local hospitals and organizations in their communities for help,” Wyden said. “I’m glad these federal grants are heading to our state, and I’ll keep battling for similar federal investments that bolster rural quality

of life throughout Oregon.”

The USDA Emergency Rural Health Care program provides up to $500 million in grant funding to help broaden access to COVID-19 testing and vaccines, rural health care services, and food assistance through food banks and food distribution facilities.

Submissions for

Commissioner Court Boice RespondsPublic Forum

David Rupkalvis; 8-14-22 Pilot

Editorial Opinion, Curry Libraries,

Sexual Material Content: The Boice Library Resolution that I submitted to the Curry Board of Commissioners had absolutely nothing to do with recommending book banning or censuring. It simply requested that we as caring adults be a little more guarded in helping to protect underaged and unsupervised children. I believed then and still of course believe now that we should simply place any controversial Sexual Material established in our Public Libraries behind the counter until parents check the books or in-formation out and if they then choose to introduce to their own children.

Frankly, I really don’t concern myself with National Library Association mandates. Also, early in my resolution, I made it clear the Curry Board of Commissioners claimed no authority, only stating a request in representing what many Curry Citizens felt was a reasonable approach and obligation to be more aware for unsuspecting or curious kids. The extreme left sadly and essentially went into orbit using horribly negative terms and spinning untruths. Unfortunately, my resolution didn’t pass with the other two Commissioners anyway. However, to me, doing nothing on this and similar issues is not an option. I have nine grandchildren, so I will always work diligently to protect our children and families!

Steven Plaxco; 10-7-22; Pilot Letter to Editor, Boice Homeless Plan: I don’t in anyway wish to be disrespectful to Mr. Plaxco, however it is obvious he has issues. As my preliminary concept clearly identifies, all Homeless Veterans, whether residents or not along with all actual Curry Citizens, especially families suffering and experiencing homelessness are our first focus and highest priority. I believe we all likewise clearly have that cultural responsibility. My basic approach is to transport non-residents with Substance Abuse, Mental and Behavioral Health issues to Salem where they can receive critical help. We simply do not have adequate resources here to properly assist. If Mr. Plaxco and whoever is advising him would have simply taken the time to read the Boice Homeless plan, they could have been assured

that he as a Veteran and his needs are whom we foremost wish to help. I stand by my solid six-year record in being fully engaged in Curry Veteran concerns, is-sues, and assistance. I will always work diligently for our Vets!

Jason Liddell; 10-28-22; Pilot Letter to Editor, November Ballot Measure 112: Amending our Oregon Constitution in my view should never be a simple matter. I consistently follow the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Lobby – This is a very complex issue and Citizens Initiative. The strong OSAA opposition to Measure 112 obviously carried a great deal of credibility with me. They would not support whatsoever due to many likely negative long-term consequences, some that will be very costly to our County in particular related to our tremendous incarceration expenses. For the Curry County Taxpayers, our Jail in Gold Beach totals around $120 per inmate-day, plus their medical needs that State Law unfortunately requires our local Citizens to also bear that burden. That is sometimes staggering! Requiring those held that are capable of working to help off-set some of those costs is hardly in my view unjust punishment. In fact, most citizens believe it’s quite reasonable. I and every person I know, of course do not support nor condone slavery in any form, period! Any claims to the contrary are simply delusional. One of my greatest heroes that I’ve ever had the privilege of studying was William Wilberforce. He was the devoted Jesus Christ fol-lower who in the 1830’s and 40’s almost singlehandedly abolished the English-Great Britain Slave Trade. Most of the people that initiated measure 112 are decent people, Mr. Liddell though represents the ‘extreme left’. In my view, he and others who share his views would be much more helpful within our society, fighting and speaking out against the evil Drug Cartels and Sex Traffickers if I may offer just a couple of examples. Again, I will always work diligently to protect our children and families!

Thank You

It’s bad enough that all but one of our duly elected Coos-Curry Elec tric Co-op directors don’t believe in, or practice, transparency and honesty. It’s even worse that they discriminate against that person’s advocacy for us, the member/own ers, and exclude participation, de spite the fact that she was re-elected by us.

DON’T Be Fooled! The owner/ members of the Co-op are NOT the only ones who will be paying. Increased costs will be passed on to ALL, with increased rents, etc. in the entire CCEC service area. And, who knows how these costs will be shared by the franchised Cities & South Coast lumber?

In 2020, the revised by-laws were amended to include the ability of CCEC to “PROVIDE” broad band services. That did not include/ reveal that they were establish ing a profit-making corporation with themselves as the corporate directors. And we, owner/members were given no vote while we are at significant financial risk i.e. left holding the bag.

Finally, our appreciation to all the vendors- again, too numerous to list- however everyone had won derful products and the personal touch added to over-all impression of of a warm, vibrant, welcoming event. We are planning to sponsor the same next year. After all, the fair has become a local tradition. Legitimate question

So... at this point I have a legitimate question for the Pilot's editorial staff:

Are letters to the editor so few and infrequent that you have liter ally no choice but to regularly run Kellie Evan's extreme right-wing, anti-library diatribes for the sake of filling space?

sociological explanations of why people steal, let's take a look at the simple differences -

When you get a speeding ticket the officer says "Have a nice day" and you are free to go on about your business. When you are arrested for theft you get put into handcuffs, stuffed into a patrol car, taken to the county jail and formally booked, fingerprinted and charged. You then have to obtain legal counsel and you are tried in court. A speeding ticket may be a couple hundred dollars, whereas a theft charge could be a fine of several thousand dollars and include a jail term.

Almost everyone has received a speeding ticket at some time in their lives, I have received two or three myself. But, being charged with theft is something very few people have in their record. You can get almost any job despite a speeding ticket but a theft conviction severely limits your options, especially if it involves money. Theft is a violation of trust.

I have many friends who have received speeding tickets. Sure, you can be friends with a thief, just don't invite them to your house for dinner.

Brookings City Council “Week ly Update”(9/23/22) states that, “… a Beacon subcontractor bored through an eight inch water main on Mountain View Drive, resulting in a public works crew response that lasted seven hours.” In addition it states, “We have had numerous citizen complaints during this broadband construction project.” They/WE will be billed for the cost of repairs.

The 10/7/20 “Weekly Update” documents an OSU study, “Oregon by the Numbers,” which provides information concerning Curry County. According to this study, “95.7% of the county has access to broadband.”

How does ORS 62.215 apply? Does Oregon’s Public Records Law apply? And how do we hold elected officials accountable?

Thank you

The Langlois Lions wish to thank community volunteers and bakers (too many to list) for contributing to the very successful Langlois Holiday Craft Fair held November 18th and 19th. This event has been going on for an unbelievable 30 years or so and is now enshrined

Or are you so eager to receive something representative of this nation's ongoing, inflammatory cul ture wars that you'll continue giving her what amounts to a regular col umn for the sake of "representing both sides" of an argument?

Either way, the inordinately high amount of oxygen you've given to this conspiracy theory-driven "is sue" seems to speak more to the Pi lot's last gasp attempt to hang onto their declining readership, rather than an attempt to add to respectful, constructive civic dialogue.

Please note, I am an (exhausted) employee of the Chetco Communi ty Public Library District, speaking as an (exhausted) private citizen.

Theft is not like speeding

In response to Roger Gitlin's, Guest Column, November 24, suggesting that Janell Howard's theft charge is like a speeding ticket: that just simply is not true. My husband was a criminal sociologist for many years at several penal institutions and as you would expect we had many conversations about the cases he worked. I can assure you there is a huge difference between speeding and theft.

Without going into the

For Mr. Gitlin and Mayor Ron Hedenskog to suggest that City Manager, Janell Howard's arrest for theft is like a speeding ticket is to insult the intelligence of the citizens of Brookings.

A hopeful message

I’d like to suggest that we put aside our differences this holiday season and maybe if we’re lucky, we may get used to getting along with each other and being merry. Let’s look past our political biases and all things that distance us from one another and see each other as co-habitants of this great and beautiful planet and children of a wonderful and loving God.

Let’s try and remember that while we may not always agree with each other, we don’t need to castigate one another when we don’t agree.

Most of us are doing our best and someone else is not always responsible for our problems.

It’s time to put our frowns down. It’s time to raise our hopes. It’s time to smile at one another. Let’s start today and maybe if we all get going on this, we may look forward to a very happy new year! Let me be the first to wish you one.

(This Authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. Food drive provides food for Coos, Curry counties

Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative and Beacon Broadband organized another successful annual food drive, and this year, the donations exceeded the record set in previous years.

Throughout October, the two organizations rallied to encourage community members and employees to donate towards the annual food drive.

The community once again showed its generosity in full, and over 3,045 pounds of food were collected and distributed throughout Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Coquille and Myrtle Point.

The two organizations and the Coos-Curry Elec tric Charitable Foundation also donated $2,280 to be distributed to food banks and pantries throughout the region.

As a cooperative, Co

os-Curry Electric was found ed on the seven cooperative principles. One of those principles is “Concern for Community.” What began as a vision to assure rural communities across the south coast of Oregon receive electric service has now transformed into focusing on enhancing our members’ lives. The same vision that Beacon Broadband is follow ing today.

“For Coos-Curry Electric and Beacon Broadband, our annual food drive embodies the cooperative spirit by coming together as a team to show kindness and support for others.” Says Keith Bu chhalter, Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, marketing and member services manag er. “We pride ourselves in belonging to the communities we serve, and we can’t think of a better way to give back to the community.”

Beachwalkers wanted for coastal seabird survey

On December 10 and 11, the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team will be delivering two free training sessions for members of the community - one in Port Or ford and a second in Brook ings. The COASST Beached Bird program is focused on the intersection of science, conservation, and commu nities. COASST participants help make a difference for the environment by collecting data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds and marine debris on a monthly basis to establish the baseline pattern of beached bird mortality on North Pacific beaches.

Through interactive, hands-on workshops, trainees will become acquainted with COASST survey protocols, have a chance to learn more about the seabirds that live in their area, and learn about the effects of marine debris on sea life.

The COASST training provides participants with the tools to monitor for poten tial changes in the marine environment and promote stewardship of local marine

resources.

COASST is a citizen sci ence project of the University of Washington in partnership with state, tribal, and federal agencies, environmental organizations, and communi ty groups. COASST believes residents of coastal commu nities are essential scien tific partners in monitoring marine ecosystem health. By collaborating with communi ty members, natural resource management agencies and environmental organizations, COASST works to translate long-term monitoring into effective marine conservation solutions. Currently, nearly 1000 participants survey beaches in Washington, Ore gon, California, and Alaska.

The Port Orford training session will be held on De cember 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the OSU Port Orford Field Station (444 Jackson St., Port Orford, OR 97465).

The Brookings training ses sion will be held on Sunday, December 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chetco Activ ity Center (550 Chetco Ln., Brookings, OR 97415).

Increased emergency SNAP benefits continue in December

Most Oregonians who receive Supplemental Nu trition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will receive emergency allotments in December.

The federal government has approved emergency allotments every month since March 2020.

This gives SNAP recip ients additional support during the COVID-19 pandemic. These emergen cy benefits are a temporary support that Oregon can provide because of the feder al COVID-19 public health emergency.

Because the federal government approved these

emergency benefits for De cember, Oregon will also be able to issue them in January 2023. However, the emergen cy benefits are expected to end when the federal public health emergency ends.

In December, approxi mately 426,000 SNAP house holds will receive approxi mately $70 million in extra food benefits in addition to their regular SNAP benefits.

“We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to get enough healthy food for themselves and their families,” said Jana Mc Lellan, interim director of the Oregon Department of

Great turnout for Rotary Turkey Trot in Gold Beach

Eighty-eight runners and walkers lined up just north of Jerry’s Rogue Jets in Gold Beach, waiting for the signal to start the 13th Annual Rotary TURKEY TROT on Saturday, November 26.

“The beautiful, sunny morning encouraged a large turn-out and enthusiastic participation in the fam ily-friendly event,” said organizer and Gold Beach Rotarian, Tara Simonson, as she jogged in place to stay warm in the brisk 43-degree temperature at the finish line. “There was a mix of bundled-up locals as well as visiting family and friends, and folks who make this event part of their Thanksgiv ing tradition every year.”

Following a group of com petitively fast runners was an assortment of children, par ents, grandparents, nine ba by-strollers, four youngsters on bikes, and six well-be haved dogs on leashes.

Groups of families, friends, neighbors, and couples participated in the 3.1-mile long holiday event, supposedly to burn off extra calories consumed during Thanksgiving dinner.

The fastest male and overall winner of the event was Josh Goudelack of Coquille, at 19:10. This is a repeat performance for Josh, as he placed first in the men’s division last year. The award for fastest female went to Amanda McCandless, finish ing at 22:04.

The fastest male walker was won by Aaron Whistler of Cave Junction, and Mary Geyer was the fastest woman walker.

Awards were given to Gold Beach resident, 4-year old Joshua Giovannetti, who

was the youngest participant in the event (not counting infants in strollers), and to the oldest participant, 86-year old Sally Martinez of Port Orford.

The best Super Hero costumes were awarded to mom and son duo, Synthia and Tyler Westerman, in their authentic looking "Incredi bles" outfits.

“Over three hundred pounds of canned and boxed food plus $20 in cash were generously donated as entry fees for the event,” said Simonson.

Rotary members will de liver all the contributions to Gold Beach food banks this week, to help local folks who are experiencing food insecu rity this holiday season.

Human Services (ODHS), Self-Sufficiency Programs. “The holiday season can also bring additional stress and worry for many Oregonians who are still struggling to meet their basic needs and we encourage them to con tact our partners at 211, the Oregon Food Bank and their local Community Action Agency for support during this difficult time.”

Current SNAP households will receive emergency allot ments on Dec. 13. Emergen cy allotments will be issued Dec. 30 or Jan. 4, 2023 for households who did not receive benefits in the first monthly issuance.

Wild Rivers Dance live Nutcracker performance returns

The Nutcracker Ballet returns to a local stage after its two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This season’s Wild Rivers Dance Company performance will take place at the recently renovated Crescent Elks Auditorium in Crescent City, with performances on Friday, December 16, at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 17, at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 18 at 2 p.m.

dance-57536394073),

Sky-Marie McDonald has adapted the Nutcracker ballet for the current Wild Rivers Dance Company in a way that keeps the production fresh and professional. New York dancers Robert Jamie Mason and Cara Gardella will join the Company this year, along with Amber Bailey of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Sarah Worden from Houston, Texas.

Robert Mason is a multidisciplinary artist who began dancing jazz, tap, and hip

hop at the age of nine and classical ballet and modern at age 14. He recently received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Dance from the Juilliard School.

Cara Gardella trained at SUNY Purchase conservatory of dance, completing her formal training in ballet and modern dance at Adelphi University and The Martha Graham School of Contemporary dance. Amber Bailey trained at the University of Oklahoma and is in her fifth season with Ft. Wayne Ballet,

where she has performed in principal roles in a variety of productions, including the Nutcracker. Sarah Worden began performing principal roles with Houston Dance Theatre at 17, earning her BFA in Ballet Performance and her MFA in Dance at the University of Oklahoma. Her professional career includes the Montgomery Ballet and Ballet Idaho. She is currently performing with the City Ballet of Houston, while also guest teaching and choreographing nationwide.

This year’s performance has been supported in part through grants from Business Oregon and Advance Health. Many thanks to Ione Trapp for her generous support of the new studio this year, and to the Babin Family and Amanda McVay for their support of annual scholarships for Company dancers. And thanks to the many other businesses and individuals in the community who sponsor individual dancers. Sponsorship affirms the commitment these young dancers put into their performance. Any remaining balance after production expenses are paid will go back into supporting dance education and cultural performances for the next year.

On November 24 we lost our dad. Though gone from this world, he has eternal life in Heaven.

Our dad touched many lives by sharing his love and the word of God with others. He devoted many years to helping those in need and guiding those in recovery to a new way of life.

Our dad had an excellent

sense of humor and loved to laugh and poke fun at himself.

He had a special gift of making all he encountered feel at ease and special and treated them as if they were the most important person on earth.

We have comfort in knowing we will see him again.

Our dad never liked to say goodbye, but instead liked to say I’ll see you later, and that, we will.

William Raymond Ross

Edward Erb, 91, died peacefully at his Gardner Ridge home on November 4, 2022. A private memorial service will be held at the family cemetery in the spring or summer. Ed was born in Venus, Nebraska in 1930, the fourth of five brothers born to Ruth and Henry Erb. The family followed ranch work during the depression through Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico before relocating to San Diego to work in manufacturing for the war effort. Ed's three older brothers Don, Harold and Richard served in World War II. After the war the family purchased raw land, by mail and sight unseen, outside Junction City, Oregon. They lived in a tent while Henry and the older brothers logged the property, selling some timber for income and using some to build a home. Ed met his wife Cora at Junction City High School and started a family with her in 1947 that grew to include five daughters and a son. Ed worked in lumber mills near Junction City in the Willamette Valley but came to love the Oregon coast on weekend ocean fishing trips aboard his first boat, the Somnus, which he built. He started as a sport fisherman but soon fitted the Somnus with commercial salmon gear and began selling his catch. In the winter of 1956, he took his first commercial fishing job pulling crab pots in Port Orford. Soon he was captaining boats owned by others and then was owner/ operator of his own boats, including the Donna N, then the Kincheloe. In the winter of 1959 Ed moved the family from Port Orford to Brookings, renting and eventually owning the family home on Gardner Ridge Road. In the 60s, Ed's brothers Richard and Kenny followed him to Brookings and into commercial fishing. In the 70s Henry, Ruth and Harold sold the Junction City properties and moved to Gardner Ridge when additional acreage adjacent to the property Ed and Cora owned became available. After a bad back forced Ed off the ocean in the 1970s he began selling fresh seafood from the back of his pickup truck, driving from the port of Brookings to the Rogue Valley. Soon Ed and Cora

built a small fish processing operation behind their home on Gardner Ridge, which led to Ed's operation of Gold Beach Seafood in Gold Beach. In his final working years Ed was employed as a millwright at South Coast Lumber until his retirement.

In the 1960s there were jam sessions with Ed on guitar, Cora on upright piano, Kenny on mandolin, and Kenny's wife Peggy providing vocals. On one occasion they were joined by Esther Waldien, who taught Ed’s children at Upper Chetco School, and played steel guitar. Old time music was favored including Hank Snow, Patsy Cline, Jimmie Rodgers, Ferlin Husky, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and Teresa Brewer. Ed and Kenny made many hunting trips to Eastern Oregon which might include Philip Wright, Leon Meeker, Kenny Mason, Jim Donnelly, Mike O’Dwyer and Dugie Freeman. When their wives Cora and Peggy, Doris Wright, Evelyn Meeker, Jean Mason, Linda Donnelly and Shirley Freeman joined the hunting vacations, they also enjoyed collecting old bottles and glass insulators from abandoned homesites and electric lines.

There were numerous hiking and camping adventures around southern Oregon. In July 2001, Ed and Kenny made a kayak trip through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness down the Chetco River on a trip guided by Ed’s granddaughter Stormy Havice. Kenny’s memorial service in 2010 included a photo from that trip.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, wife Cora, grandchildren Ryan and Nicole Erb, and great grandchild Sierra Snyder.

Ed was also married to

Ed is survived by his children Carol Erb, Valorie Havice and her partner Larry Pease, Vivian Erb and her partner Teri Schaefer, Nancy Erb, and Patrick Erb of Brookings; and Carla Erb of Tucson, AZ. His grandchildren Rachel and David Nelson of Brookings, Sadie and Ryan Spicer of Medford, Stormy and Art Solis of Aurora CO, Sheena and Jake Williams of Grants Pass, Wyatt Snyder of Brookings, Henry and Mikayla Hacking of Essex, Maryland. His great grandchildren Jordan Nelson and his spouse Kristy of Lacey, WA; Christopher Nelson of Corvallis; Cora and her brother Kaden Spicer, Lucia and Maya Solis, Arabella and Hayden Williams, Nathan Snyder Mead, and Bianca Hacking. His great, great grandchildren Liam, Ezlyn and Linden Nelson.

In his final years Ed savored his bachelor life on Erb Lane with a front door view of Mt Emily, his series of cats which he named "Kitty”, and walks to the family camp on the North Fork. He didn't remember all those who visited him, but he seemed fascinated by a child named Cora, his youngest great grandchild, and he would ask her if she knew for whom she is named.

Ed especially came to rely on the friendship and loving support provided by Larry Pease who visited him daily, regularly drove him to town for shopping, laundry, or lunch which they would eat parked at Sporthaven Beach to watch for boats coming across the bar. The family is grateful for all that Larry did to enrich Ed’s life and to ease his final days.

animal is an agreement by an individual to care for a needy pet in his or her private residence until the animal is placed in a permanent new home. Many times shelters will ask foster parents to step up and house puppies to provide early socialization and training to acclimate these young animals to living in homes.

Who pays for fostering costs?

The question of nancing foster care depends on the organization one works with. Most shelters or rescue organizations will cover at least some of the costs of supplies and medical care. However, this is not always the case. It is important for potential foster parents to understand the commitment fostering requires before signing up.

While there are many bene ts to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something sel ess, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires.

How long is the fostering term?

The ASPCA says that time commitments for fostering can vary. Sometimes it may be a matter of weeks or it could be months,

depending on the foster program and the pet’s situation.

What are common expectations?

A foster program will explain their speci c expectations. These may include training the pets to void outdoors or in a litter box. Foster parents may be expected to teach a dog to rest in his crate or basic commands.

Who can I reach out to?

The animal care resource Great Pet Care says municipal shelters, nonpro t shelters and nonpro t animal rescue groups typically have fostering programs. Rescue groups tend to have more time and resources to provide temporary pet parents with more compatible animal matches.

Fostering a pet can be a rewarding and worthwhile experience for pets and people.

Animal shelters serve as temporary way stations for animals that are between homes. The purpose of shelters is to offer food and safe surroundings for surrendered or lost pets until they can be reunited with owners or be adopted by new families.
