‘Historic storm’ seen for Del Norte, Curry By Jeremy C. Ruark For The Triplicate

he National Weather Service has issued a significant high-wind warning for Curry and Del Norte counties, from Tuesday morning though

early Wednesday morning – now classified as a potentially historic, dangerous storm. “We are calling this a potentially historic storm because we have not experienced such a deepening low pressure coming in from the south, so it is one

to take serious,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Brett Lutz. The National Weather Service’s online summary describes the approaching storm as a rapidly deepening “bomb cyclone” that will take aim at the southern

Oregon coast. Storm-force winds, with periods of hurricane-force gusts, are expected over the coastal waters. The winds over the waters will initially be southerly, then quickly switch to strong northerly winds behind the low on Tuesday night,

said the weather service. This will bring extremely steep and dangerous seas to the coastal waters, said weather officials. Additionally, high surf is expected along all coastal areas of southern Oregon. Weather service models show

sustained winds between 40 and 50 miles per hour, with gusts that could approach hurricane force. “The wind gusts have the potential of being as high was

ust a few hours after winning maybe the biggest game in Del Norte High School’s football history, the Warrior coaching staff already had put that victory behind them. An even bigger game awaits Del Norte this coming Saturday, when it takes on top-seeded Encinal High School in the championship game of the North Coast Section Division 5 playoffs. The game will be played at Hayward High School near Berkeley starting at 7 p.m. Del Norte is advancing after a 28-7 win last Saturday over Moreau Catholic High School of Hayward in front of a packed and thrilled Mike Whalen Field crowd in Crescent City, one that saw Del Norte’s defense punish the third-seeded Mariners. Moreau Catholic - which had played for the section title in 2018 - was held by the Warriors to just seven points on only 112 yards in total offense. The Mariners came into the game averaging 41 points and 357 yards per game. “We were tougher and we were stronger,” White said. Much as it did in its firstround playoff victory over Alhambra, Del Norte’s defense penetrated the Moreau Catholic backfield early and often. Of the Mariners’ 19 rushing attempts, seven resulted in negative yards. On the other side of the ball, Del Norte continued its late-season trend of running, running … and running. The Warriors attempted just three passes against the Mariners. They didn’t need more. Levi Cox-Cooley, Kobe Mitchell and Chase Blackburn were able to consistently grind out first downs against a big and experienced Moreau Catholic defensive front. The Warriors averaged more than six yards per carry. Twice against Moreau Catholic, with the ball on the one-yard line, 200-pound More Football on Page A2

If you decide to add fishing to your holiday plans, you don’t need a license or a tag to fish, crab or clam anywhere in the state that’s open to fishing, crabbing or clamming, including ocean fishing. But it’s not a holiday from other fishing regulations. All other rules and regulations apply. “Bag limits, closures and size restrictions are in effect, and you need to know the rules and regulations where you are fishing,” said Oregon Depart-

he Del Norte County Fairgrounds turned into a winter wonderland last Saturday as the meeting room filled with trees of all colors and sizes. Emblem Club #175 was holding its 25th-annual Festival of Trees fundraiser, sparking the holiday spirit in Crescent City. “We do this every year, and we have so much fun doing it,” said Linda Buzzini, the club’s president. “We really appreciate everyone coming down to support us.” More than 30 trees lined the walls, each decorated uniquely and donated for the fundraiser. Nearly 350 people strolled

through the building to admire the trees, decorated in a variety of themes that included a dog tree, Minnie Mouse tree, and a movie-night tree. “I enjoy the finished product and seeing how it turns out. Also, seeing my friends,” said Roslyn Goodrich, a member of the local Emblem Club for 35 years. “Every year, this is just done so well.” Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance, posing for photos with children. Crescent City Elks Lodge exalted ruler Kevin Woodward and his wife, Cathy, had the honor of donning the costumes this year. After perusing the trees, people placed raffle tickets in More Trees on Page A5
