Home again, they’re on course for a grand opening J
By David Hayes Staff Writer
im Martin remembers hitting the Del Norte Golf Course off State Route 197 “way back when” he lived in Brookings in the 1980s.
His general-contractor ’s job took him to Illinois in 1992, but his fondness for the ninehole, 96-acre course would bring Martin back for a round of golf every couple of years or so. Now, he’s returned to this region for good. His
reasons: the climate … and golf. “In Illinois, the winters are too cold and the summers too hot. But in Crescent City, you don’t tan, you just rust,” joked Martin. Plus, this year the opportunity arose to do
more than just play golf again on the Del Norte Golf Course. He could buy it. At the same time, Martin said, he has no plan to convert the property, using his years of experience building homes, condos and
townhouses. Rather, with the help of his son, Alan, he’ll resuscitate the land and reopen the course for the next generation of golfers to enjoy as he has. The purchase of the property cleared escrow last week, completing
his acquisition of Del Norte Golf Course from the Elk Valley Rancheria Tribe. The course is located about halfway between More Course on Page A2
A bad turn ... into Java Hut Arrested for DUII
58-year-old woman was arrested at the A scene of a one-car accident Monday night when her car careened off U.S. Highway 101 and
crashed into the Java Hut at the Fred Haight Drive intersection in Smith River. According to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Online Information System, Karen Ilene McGuire was booked into the county’s jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants. California Highway Patrol Officer Brandy Gonzalez said the crash occurred about 11:20 p.m. and that no one was injured or was inside the building at the time. Gonzalez added that the crash was not the result of a law-enforcement pursuit, as initially reported on The Del Norte and Curry County Scanner Feed Facebook Page.

Two Warrior standouts ready for Hall of Fame By John Pritchett For the Triplicate
T
wo Del Norte High standouts who inspired the next generation of Warrior athletes will be inducted into the Del Norte High Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night. The ceremony will be at Mike Whalen Field just prior to the Warriors’ varsity football game against Yreka. Both were multi-sport athletes, both earned conference most-valuable-player honors, and both went on to successful college athletic careers. Petra Lorenzi graduated in 2005 after lettering in three sports. She earned a
remarkable four all-conference White Star honors in volleyball, including MVP awards her junior and senior seasons. On the softball diamond, Lorenzi was a four-time White Star as well, and was the conference’s MVP her junior year. She was a leader of the first Warrior softball team to claim a Big Five Conference championship. Lorenzi went on to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of South Carolina, competed professionally in Puerto Rico for a season, and now is head volleyball coach at College of the Redwoods.
