andle lights flickered, warming the inside of Mason jars. They reflected on handcrafted hearts that lined the grass of Beachfront Park in Crescent City. Into the chilly evening, bright sky lanterns floated up to join the stars. “I miss him, Mommy,” young Claire Moore told her mother. Lizzie Moore and Kimberlee Budiner hosted their fifth “Light up the Sky” event last Sunday evening at the park’s pavilion, providing families a space to remember their children who have passed away. Moore and Budinger have hosted these intimate gatherings for those who wished to share stories and pictures of their lost children. Under the pavilion, they hang Christmas lights, and set up tables with photos, tissues, coffee, snacks and a cake. Along the grass, they place jars lit by candles, with names pinned to them. The evening ends with families lighting sky lanterns for their children and sending them out over the ocean. “I wanted something that was going to go up to heaven. You know, something you could send off to your child,” Moore said. “They’re just beautiful. It’s really amazing to watch that many fly up into the sky and just know that somebody sent that to their child, like a kiss or a hug.”

Shooting, homicide probed T

he Del Norte County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating two separate incidents last week - a shooting and a possible homicide. Two people sustained gunshot wounds from a shooting that occurred the morning of Oct. 24 on the 800 block of Joshua Road off of Parkway Drive. Staff at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City alerted the sheriff ’s office as two patients were receiving care for gunshot wounds in the emergency room around 6:16 a.m. Deputies responded to the hospital and also to the location of the shooting. Law enforcement officials said sheriff ’s investigators are following leads, have executed a search warrant and gathered information regarding the incident. Meantime, an ambulance and a deputy found a deceased male on the 400 block of Cummins Road after responding to a 911 call for an ambulance at approximately 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26. The sheriff ’s office dispatcher received a call from a man complaining of difficulty breathing and requesting medical assistance. A deputy responded to assist the ambulance with locating the residence. When they arrived, they found the dead man, who has been confirmed as Louis C. Martin, born in 1977. John B. Swinger, born in 1970, has been arrested for homicide in conjunction with that case and is being held at the Del Norte County Jail. No additional details were available at press time.

Del Norte student scores lagging, but making progress T

he test results of the standardized California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) show the Del Norte Unified School District continues to lag behind state levels in English arts and math. But district officials see clear signs of progress. The tests were administered in May and results released Oct. 9. The tests involve grades three through eight and grade 11. Statewide, 51% of students met or exceeded standards in English arts, and 39.7% met or exceeded standards for math. Del Norte student test results were 35.6% and 25.48%, respectively. Leslie Machado, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, said she saw both bright spots and areas where a lot of work remains. “If we compare us to the state, it’s obvious we’re lower.

“If you look back at those ‘cohorts’ (tracking the same group of students across three grade levels) and see where we started, you can’t go from 60% having not met the standard and jump three levels in a year,” said Machado. “We want to keep seeing growth, and seeing kids doing better and getting more content as they go from grade to grade. But at the same time, we know we’re closing that gap grade to grade.” Superintendent Jeff Harris, looking at the overall picture, said the district isn’t seeing a significant decline in the test scores. “We’re holding the line, moving slowing ahead. This year, looking at English and math, what we’re going to see is a 1% increase. “In some cases, what our individual school sites did appears at this point to be a bigger growth than what the state had, and in some cases bigger drops than the state had. Overall, we’re holding steady,” Harris said. The CAASPP tests were piloted in the 2013 school year as an alternative to the failure of the federally mandated No Child Left Behind pro-

gram, Harris said. In the process, there was a lot of confusion at first, because the new standards were around a student’s ability to persevere in solving a problem, Harris said. “How do you gauge perseverance in a test?
