he organizers of last weekend’s 28th-annual “Sea Cruise,” featuring hundreds of classic roadsters from across the region, couldn’t have asked for better weather or a better event. Cindy Vosburg, the Crescent City and Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce executive director, was effusive. “It was awesome,” said Vosburg.

“The perfect weather helped so much. In my memory, it was the best in 12 years, the best for Show & Shine, the best First Friday, the best Sea Cruise and Brews,” she said. “You saw a lot of people enjoying hot rods, with a lot of owners making and renewing acquaintances, making a lot of car clubs happy.” Vosburg said the main-event car show on Saturday featured 248 entries spread out over Beachfront Park, coming up a little shy of the 300 entries the chamber had hoped for.

Jason Bartholomew, president of the Northern Knights Car Club - co-sponsor of “Sea Cruise” - said the turnout by comparison was up from last year ’s rainout, although down from 2017’s 333 registrations. “Doing research, that correlates with rainouts,” said Bartholomew. “The following year ’s attendance is generally down. “One thing that was brought to my attention - I hadn’t thought of it - gas is at a five-year high. We had a lot not make the trip from Redding, where

alifornia officials have confirmed that the pathogen that causes sudden oak death (SOD) has been detected in Del Norte County. The pathogen is a water mold that can kill oaks and tanoaks, threaten wildlife habitat and cause fire risk. It was introduced to California on nursery stock from an unknown location in 1995, according to a sudden oak death economic impact study in February. The tree disease also has been found in Monterey, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Napa, Marin, Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties.

First dredging for harbor since the tsunami of 2011

The following is a conversation about sudden oak death and its impact with Chris Lee, a forest health specialist with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Chris Lee: The pathogen that causes sudden oak death (Phytophthora ramorum) was detected from samples taken in July in Jedediah Smith State Park, about five miles east of Crescent City. So far, we have detected it on two small living tanoak trees. Additionally, two tanoak trees near the ones that tested positive have died. One

it’s $4.20 to $4.40 a gallon. “So, we’re not disappointed at all with the turnout. We’re pleased with it.” Vosburg said the car show featured entries from 26 different clubs, with 16 members of the Curry County Cruisers winning the participation award. She said the long-distance honor went to a couple who drove 830 miles

or the first time since 2011, Crescent City Harbor will be dredged to provide ships a safe passage. As ocean waves roll in to the harbor, silt follows - eventually beginning to fill the mouth of the harbor and making passage difficult. If the silt rises too high, boats can run aground and must avoid the harbor, said deputy harbormaster Lane Tavasci. The United States Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing and

paying for Crescent City’s dredging project. The corps controls the maintenance for federal channels. The dredging project began earlier this week and is expected to be completed by Oct. 15. Ideally, officials said, dredging the harbor should occur every two years. But Tavasci said that’s a costly endeavor requiring numerous permits. The process involves hiring a dredging company - this year, that’s Curtin Maritime of Richmond, CaliforMore Dredging on Page A2
