ately, the forecast for the entire southwest region of North Dakota has been nothing but rain, rain, and more rain. For the last 30 days, large portions of Adams County, Bowman County, and Hettinger County have experienced 2 to 3 times more precipitation than historical averages. National Weather Service Meteorologist Patrick Ayd said that he expects the rainy trend to continue in the short term. The rain the region has been experiencing for the past 2 to 4 weeks may continue into the end of September but eventually dry out, he said. Although farmers and

tudents from all over the region gathered at the Bowman County High School parking lot for last week’s C.O.R.E. event. Local safety departments taught students about fire safety, the risks of drunk driving, and a multitude of other safety concerns. The event, hosted by Freshman Impact and led by Southwest North Dakota coordinators Chris Peterson and Megan Oase, addressed safety concerns and aimed to prevent injuries and accidents, the leading cause of death for students. Peterson said they started the program to help save students’ lives. “Because Megan and I are in healthcare, we know how important prevention is,” said Peterson. “Also, [the volunteers] show up wearing their uniforms, so kids can get comfortable interacting with them in a positive situations, not all negative.” The event started with over 150 freshmen students from the surrounding areas watching and participating in safety-focused demonstrations and educational activities. Baker Fire Departments, and Dakota Advocacy for Children each had a hand in creating their own safety station. “[The freshmen] students attended learning stations on farm safety, drunk driving, seatbelts, fire and rescue,
child abuse, life consequences and injury rehabilitation, and vaping,” said Peterson.

Local Library hosts 3rd annual Silent Auction BY FRANK TURNER

hree years ago, the Bowman Public Library ran into an issue: they needed a new roof. At the time, the library needed to raise a large amount of funds to pay for the $55,000 project, so they started a silent auction. The auction was a success, and with the help of a community, the library was able to complete their project and then some. “We were able to cover the costs of the new roof, two furnaces, and two air conditioners with that one fundraiser,” said Sarah Snavely.

Every year since, the fundraiser became a yearly tradition, and just
last week, the library hosted their 3rd annual silent auction. From
September 16th through the 23rd, patrons could browse and bid on a va-
riety of donated goods from local small businesses and community members. Snavely said that local donors and small businesses are always ready and willing to participate in the fundraiser. “We get so many donations from so many businesses and people. It’s indicative of the generosity of the community,” said Snavely. “We are lucky to have that level of community spirit here.” The silent auction offered a wide variety of auction items. Whole sections of the auction were dedicated
