Strong storm blows roof off Bowman building Staff Report

A large thunderstorm hammered North Dakota Saturday, causing property damage, power outages and hail damage throughout the southwest region of the state. The heaviest reported damage so far has been to the roof of the West River Health Services building in Bowman. In Bowman, winds and heavy rains hit hard, tearing the roof off the West River Clinic and forcing repairmen to scramble to protect the roof of the building from a second afternoon thunderstorm Sunday. According to the National Weather Service Office in Bismarck, the strongest measured wind gusts in the area occurred between Rhame and Bowman and hit 70 miles per hour Saturday. The office declined to state if the clinic building had been hit by a micro burst. A micro burst is a localized area of a severe downdraft of air,

ports. The strongest wind gusts measured were 63 miles per hour at Williston Airport. In Dickinson, the wind was measured at 51 miles per hour Saturday. According to Montana Dakota Utilities, there were reports of power outages in eastern Bowman County Saturday, along with the areas around New England and Mott in Hettinger County. Sunday’s storms brought more hail to Mott, with reports that it was the size of quarters. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued by the National Weather Service office in Bismarck for southwestern North Dakota at approximately 5 p.m., (MT) Saturday evening. The storm system entered the region from South Dakota, according to the National Weather Service. A second series of storms went through the region Sunday evening but did not hit the Bowman area.

which can cause property damage. During Saturday’s storm approximately twothirds of the roof was damaged, with debris over the area, including a neighboring motel parking lot. Crews were called in to make temporary repairs Sunday, with the building avoiding further damage. According to the company, the offices in the building are closed and people are asked to seek assistance in neighboring facilities. “Please call West River Health Services Scranton Clinic for your appointments and concerns at 701-2756336. For Occupational, Speech and Physical Therapy appointments and concerns call 701567-6044,” is posted on the company’s Facebook site. In Mott, there were reports of ping-pong ball size hail and winds reaching 60 miles per hour Saturday. Winds earlier in the day reportedly reached 45 miles per hour at Bowman and Hettinger air-

There is a new ATM in the Bowman County building. It has been in place for several weeks after being delayed by the COVID-19 related closure. The Dakota Western Bank in Bowman was installed when some of the governmental restrictions were lifted by the state, according to Bowman County Auditor Sandi Tivis. “Then we could have the crew come in and put it (the ATM) in,” she said. The county commissioners are still restricting access to the building, she explained. “They decided to keep it as is with appointments simply because of the state DOT. We have a Department of Motor Vehicles branch office here and they are not allowing any face-to-face visits. It is strictly by appointment only. So, our office has to follow that,” she added. In addition, the NDSU Extension Office in the building is not allowing face-to-face visits yet. “Our commissioners said it was just easier to have just appointments only until those state offices are allowed to open up,” the auditor added.

According to the NWS forecast for the Bowman area, it will be sunny with highs in the mid70s through Sunday. According to Bowman County Emergency Management Officer Dean Pearson, the first he had heard about the damage Saturday was that it was caused by a possible tornado. “Usually with a tornado, you get debris scattered in all directions, but this, this was basically in one direction. That is something that you normally see with a downburst wind or a straightline wind. “We were watching from the Emergency Operations Center that night and we didn’t record any strong winds. They were in the mid to upper 60s, but we had seen there, but we didn’t see a thing with 70s and higher,” he explained. “We were really surprised when we heard that the roof had gotten damaged.”
