Student raises funds in honor of brother n ‘How many people does it take to make a difference? One.’
By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor
Brotherly love was the winner at Scranton Public School last month when an elementary student put his jump roping skills to the test to raise funds in honor of his brother who is suffering from a debilitating disease. By the end of the fundraiser, Tripp
Mack, 7, of Scranton had successfully raised $1,464 for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart school-wide fundraiser in February. Though he supported a wide-reaching charity, Mack helped raise funds with a certain person in mind: his brother. Mack’s brother, Abraham Musonda, has undergone five open-heart surgeries since being born without a left ventricle of his
heart, a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Musonda, 15, a sophomore at Scranton High School, has endured multiple complications from his disease and last year the family had to be away for a good part of the summer. The boys’ mother, Deidre Mack, who

A four-block trail of blood led Bowman police officers to the scene of an assault earlier this month that left one resident in serious condition. Bowman Police Officer Ross Dannhoff responded around 9 p.m. March 1 to the emergency room at Southwest Healthcare Services after a Bowman adult male had walked in with multiple lacerations. The man, 26, reported to police that he had been beaten and slashed with a broken beer bottle, according to police. Bowman Police Chief Chuck Headley said the man had suffered severe lacerations, including deep cuts to his tendons. Due to his critical condition, the man was unsure of where it had occurred and he could not identify his assailant. The man had walked by himself several blocks to the emergency room. The blood trail from the emergency room led officers to a residence on the 100 block on Fifth Avenue Northwest in Bowman, according to police. Bowman County Sheriff Deputies Frank Eberle and Jordan Fisher spoke with a person located inside the residence where they

‘One of the biggest Bowman events’: Celebrity Waiter raises thousands for local health care By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor

t was another stellar year for Southwest Healthcare Service’s annual Celebrity Waiter fundraising event. A gross total of $70,000 was raised through the sale of tickets, auction items, donations and an impromptu game of Bingo during the event, held March 5 at the Four Seasons Pavilion in Bowman. Though, the net profit that will go to Southwest Healthcare will be smaller after the committee pays for the event’s expenses. Twenty tables — ranging in themes from “The Walking Dead” and Words with Friends to “Saturday Night Live” and Bavarian Oktoberfest — helped celebrate the event that raises funds for departments at SWHS of Bowman. There were 315 tickets sold, with 43 live auction items, including a last-minute bid for a date with one of the auctioneering gentleman, and 131 silent auction items donated. The top selling items from the live auction were a Peter Luger-style gourmet dinner for eight prepared by several local residents, and an original painting donated by local artist Marsha Lehman. The Oktoberfest table, clad in lederhosen and blonde wigs, wins first place for best table.
