his year’s harvest season has been unusually tough on local producers. Ceaseless rains and snowstorms have caused many headaches for farmers across the southwest North Dakota region. Although producers don’t usually wish away the rain, this harvest season has been nothing but unusual. This year’s September was the rainiest September on record for the entire state of North Dakota, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Todd Hamilton. “Of all of North Dakota, if you take the whole amount of rainfall that we had over September, it was the wettest September we have had on record,” he said. Even with September in the rearview mirror, the excessive precipitation locally has refused to stop. For the month of October, the local southwest region of North Dakota has already received more than double the precipitation than what is considered historically “normal.” While the rain and snow have seemed relentless, Hamilton said that the weather

Riders compete at 10th Annual Headless Horseman Barrel Race BY FRANK TURNER

omething spooky was going on last weekend at the All Seasons Arena last week. Riders from around the area gathered in Bowman to test their riding skills at the 10th Annual 4D Headless Horseman Barrel Race. The event, hosted by Barb Williams and Ali Miller, had a Youth division for riders under the age 15 and a Pewee Division for riders under the age of 6. This year, 150 riders competed each day of the event with 300 runs in the Open 4 Division, 50 runs in the Youth Division, and 11 in the Pewee. Although this year’s attendance was down from previous years, Miller said the event is still a big draw for the area. “One thing was the storm that hit a couple of weeks ago,” said Miller. “The snow prevents a lot of people from riding and keeping their horses in shape.” Overall the event paid out around $20,000 in cash and prizes. Prizes included leather purses, bracelets, hay bags, picture frames, and buckles. On Saturday evening, the event hosted live music by Morgan Seymour and a meal catered by Lenny

he Bowman Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Ag Appreciation Banquet last week Wednesday at the 4 Seasons Pavilion. Complete with a free meal and comedic entertainment, the event celebrated both farmers and ranchers in the surrounding region. For over thirty years, the banquet has been honoring select, local producers that have made contributions to agriculture, their communities, and the surrounding region. “Not only do we celebrate agriculture and our community, which has its roots in agriculture, but we also choose an individual, couple, or ranch to honor for the evening,” said organizer of the event, Chamber Board Member Beth Criswell. This year’s honorees were life-long ranchers Wayne and Susan Nelson from Harding County. Growing up, both Wayne and Susan attended country schools in Harding County and high school in Bowman. After getting married in 1978, Wayne and Susan purchased cows and started their own ranch

operation. A year later, they started rebuilding the homestead of Wayne’s grandparents, Peder and Marie Tollefsrud, making them the third generation to live on the Tollefrsud homestead. “Ranching is something we have done all our life,” said Susan. “I just love it. It’s just a way of life and a great way to raise a family.”

Both Wayne and Susan are also deeply involved in their local community. Wayne and Susan are confirmed members of the Ladner Lutheran Church, members of the Bullock Community Club and have held numerous offices in those organizations. Wayne has served on the Harding County Weed Board, the Harding County Fair board, the

Sunrise Foundation and is currently a member of the Masonic Lodge. Susan served as a member of the local Lutheran Brotherhood branch and is a current member of the Harding County Fair Board. Wayne and Susan have three children, Kayla, Chad and Kaycee. Ultimately, it was Wayne and Susan’s children who

nominated them for the honor. Susan said that both she and Wayne were deeply honored to learn that they were chosen for the honor. “My kids said, ‘oh by the way, we nominated you for Ag Rancher of the Year and you won,’” said Susan. “When I heard, my mouth dropped and tears just started running down my face. It’s just an
