houghtful gestures for veterans may come in many forms. For some, these gestures may include giving a free Veterans Day meal or hosting an event honoring fallen soldiers. However for many, supporting and providing benefits for veterans throughout the year is just as important as the small gestures when recognizing veterans’ sacrifices. For almost three years, Veterans Services Officer Michael Carroll has worked to provide both logistical and financial services for other veterans. Carroll said that it was his own experiences from the Vietnam War that convinced him to take the Veterans Services Officer position. “When we were flying home, they told us to change out of our uniforms as soon as we could so people wouldn’t spit on us – and we were coming back from a war zone,” said Carroll. “That’s changed since then and people thank Vietnam veterans for their service now, but it affected me. Now I just want to help any veteran I can.” As a Veterans Service Officer, Carroll helps veterans navigate the Veterans Administration (VA) system for “the benefits they deserve.” Currently, Carroll said that he serves SERVICES » PAGE 2

n November 11, 1918 at the eleventh hour, an armistice with Germany was signed. After four years of bloodshed, soldiers laid down their arms, ending the First World War. The top headline from the 1918 Nov. 14 ed. of the Adams County Record read, “President Wilson Proclaims Victory of Democracy.” On that fateful day, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson addressed the nation saying, “My fellow Countrymen: The armistice was signed this morning. Everything for which America has fought has been accomplished. It will now be our fortunate duty to assist by example, by sober friendly council, and by material aid in the establishment of just democracy throughout the world.” 101 years later, people across the nation still celebrate the historic armistice as Veterans Day, a day to honor veterans for their service. This year, local businesses celebrated Veterans Day by offering Marine Brad Guthrie, along with the Kennedy’s team, hoists a new American flag in honor of Veterans Day. n Nov. 7, area hunters and conservationists gathered at the Hettinger Armory for the annual Ducks Unlimited banquet. There, volunteers and local hunters from the local West River Ducks Unlimited Chapter supported the Ducks Unlimited mission. Believe it or not, Ducks Unlimited is about much more than just trying to create unlimited ducks for sport. Instead, the organization is more conservation focused with the intention of protecting wetlands and waterfowl across the nation.
