Record Editor cbenz@countrymedia.net
One of Hettinger’s long time education administrators is retiring after more than 30 years on the
job. Hettinger Elementary Principal Lyn Hendry will be walking out of the school one last time on June 9. She resigned now (effective Jan. 9) so that the school board can have
ample time to find her replacement. Hendry started her career in 1985 in Colorado and taught fourth and fifth grade her first few years as an educator. Later she moved on to gifted and talented education. Originally from Durango, Colo., Hendry said in

Harding County came to ranton on Dec. 18 and 19 to ke on the Nighthawk boys d girls’ basketball teams, and t going 0-2 for their efforts. Hettinger-Scranton’s boy’s sketball team faced the nchers first and pulled out 64-62 win. The Nighthawk’s l court pressure initially gave e Ranchers trouble as they ickly fell behind 12-0. On top
of that, their 6’4” center Mason Teigen left the game late in the first quarter with three fouls and would not return until the 2nd half. The Nighthawks built a 13-point lead at the end of the first half which was highlighted by a buzzer-beating long range 3-point shot by Haden Sadowsky, which made the score 38-25. With the return of Teigen in the second half, better shooting and rebounding, they outscored Hettinger/Scranton 37-
26 but the Ranchers fell just short by two points. They had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to go but, Sam Kludt blocked a close in shot by Teigen which more than likely saved the game from being tied. The Ranchers got the ball back with 10 seconds left but could not get off a good shot. Kludt was having a problem finding his shooting touch but his blocked shot was definitely one of the key moments for the

MDU went very smooth. “ALLETE Clean Energy was very good to work with in the process and has been very helpful,” he said. “Any questions that came up they were right there to assist.” Holzer comes to the area from Mandan, previously employed with MDU at Heskett Station as a Maintenance Supervisor. The investiture ceremony took place at 1 p.m. in Mott, inside the very room Gion has been presenting to judges for the past 25 years as Hettinger County State’s Attorney. The next time Gion will be in the room, he’ll be the one on the bench donning the black robe and gavel. Gion, a Regent native, had also been Slope County State’s Attorney since 2012. He also previously served as state’s attorney for Bowman and Grant Counties as well as the city of Regent. Judge William Herauf opened the day explaining the ceremony and giving the crowd a preview of what to expect. The courtroom was filled with family and friends. His parents Jim and Marie, wife Susan and son Tyrel sat close as friends and colleagues of Gion spoke kindly of the former attorney turned judge. Many dignitaries were in Mott for the

Record Editor cbenz@countrymedia.net It’s been nearly a year in the making. In January 2015, Wells McGiffert of ALLETE Clean Energy was in the area for the first of many meetings with county officials. It was the beginning of the process that led to 43 wind turbines being erected north of Hettinger. The Thunder Spirit Wind Project. “It’s a huge milestone,”
McGiffert said during a conference call with the county commissioners at their January meeting. “It’s good, clean, renewable energy, and it supports kind of the diversification plan for the state of North Dakota.” The project initially broke ground in early spring last year, and though a few towers still need to pass a 48-hour inspection test, all 43 have been commissioned. The last stage of the project was to transition ownership of the wind farm from ALLETE to Montana-Dakota Utilities
Co. (MDU). That process was completed on Dec. 30. “We’re in the process of transferring all the permits and all that type of thing, (and) as of Saturday they commissioned the 43rd turbine,” Darren Holzer said at the January commissioner’s meeting. Holzer was hired on as Manager of Combustion Turbines and Wind Generation by MDU in mid-October. He will be in charge on site at the wind farm. According to Holzer, the transition from ALLETE to
