ow does a local business support a good cause and celebrate the fall season? Farmer’s Union Insurance found an answer: one gigantic pumpkin. For the next couple of weeks, a truly massive pumpkin will reside in a wheelbarrow outside of the Farmer’s Union Insurance building. So what’s the deal with this gourd-geous pumpkin? The local insurance business is hosting a contest/fundraiser until Oct. 28, to find out who can best guess the weight of the hefty pumpkin. The person who both donates and guesses the closest weight of the pumpkin will win the pumpkin and $100. The real prize of the contest, however, is that Farmer’s Union Insurance will match up to $500 of the proceeds from the contest and then donate the total to the Hettinger Backpack Program. Farmer’s Union Insurance Customer Service Representative Kim Erickson said that Farmer’s Union Insurance wanted a fun excuse to do something nice for community members who really needed the help. “We just wanted to do something good with the pumpkin,” she said. or the past week, students at Hettinger Public School have been gearing up for Friday’s homecoming football game and cheering on their fellow Night Hawks by participating in a week full of homecoming themed activities. Student Council Advisor and Homecoming Coordinator Kira Henderson said she worked with both students and teachers to create a memorable week that students could rally behind. “We had a great time creating fun activities for the kids while getting everyone pumped up for the game,” said Henderson. The week’s activities started with Saturday’s coronation and homecoming dance. There, students celebrated their school spirit and the 2019 homecoming queen and king. The 2019 royalty candidates were: Gryphon Smith, Ty Warbis, Mason DeFoe, Seth Folske, Joslyn Ebert, Talia Carter, Carolyn Schultz, and Miami Pekas. Out of the eight royalty candidates, Ty

Henderson said the students had a great time decorating the halls to meet the theme. “Some of the decoration are paparazzi stuff and one class created the big Hollywood sign,” she said. “The halls looked pretty cool.” Although the “Hollywood” theme won the vote, Henderson said that some students were inspired to vote for the theme “Out of this World” for the 2019 theme because the moon landing happened exactly 50 years ago. In addition to decorating the halls, both students and teachers celebrated by putting on costumes and dressing up for most of the week. Monday, students and teachers celebrated a “red carpet” theme, dressing up to the nines to show off their most elegant dress. Tuesday was dedicated to Character/Celebrity day where HOMECOMING » PAGE 2
