You’ll notice a lot has changed in the new 2015 Country Arts SA guide.

This year we bring together all that Country Arts SA does in one easy-to-access guide.

Here you will find what’s on throughout your region in 2015 from visual arts, theatre performances, available funding and grants for artists, workshops, cinema screenings, to new locally produced shows.

In 2015 we celebrate the 30th Birthday of the Middleback Arts Centre. Reflecting the increased role the theatre now plays in Whyalla since it was first commissioned in 1985, the complex will now be known as the Middleback Arts Centre. We will also be launching our special donations program – Project 30.

And, as every year, we have put together a great year of arts and entertainment for the whole family in the Middleback Arts Centre with our Season 2015 Mainstage program.

This program would not be possible without the continued support of our long term Principal Corporate Partner, SA Power Networks. For 18 years SA Power Networks has ensured we can bring the best Australian and international performing arts to our audiences across South Australia.

Reconciliation is a priority for our organisation and inclusive of all the work we do. We recognise and respect that we are living and creating on Aboriginal Lands in South Australia and we are committed to working together to honour the living cultures of First Nations peoples.

We aim to increase respect, understanding and equality of opportunity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider communities in which we work through partnership, dialogue and action.

We believe the arts have an important role to play in reconciliation. By promoting the culture of First Nations peoples through our touring productions, exhibitions and cultural development activities, we strive to increase understanding and knowledge within the wider community. Through a program of education and cultural sharing activity for staff we will increase awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in our organisation and enable our staff to share that knowledge with the wider community.

Celebrating 30 years This year the Middleback Arts Centre turns 30.

Along with launching our new name we have a big year planned.

We’re celebrating our birthday with a season full of live performances and Arts on Screen films as well as a number of special events supported by the City of Whyalla, which the whole community can enjoy.

We’ve organised a bumper program of school holiday activities and a trip back to the 80s with a 1985 Movie Extravaganza weekend.

The trip down memory lane continues with a special Retrospective Whyalla Art Prize exhibition up on the foyer walls in the first half of 2015.

And what’s a birthday party without music and singing? So we’re bringing you the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Roadshow and a City Of Whyalla Mayoral Gala.

Don’t miss the FREE open day when we celebrate what the Middleback Arts Centre has to offer and honour the many locals who have made this place a cultural hub over the past 30 years.

To cap off the party the Band of the South Australia Police will be on stage performing a Christmas concert in November.

Meet the man behind the legend.

Kelly is a daring new stage production revealing the intimate details of Ned Kelly’s last night alive.

Ned Kelly sits in his prison cell. Tomorrow he is going to be hanged. But his final night in prison is interrupted by the arrival of his brother Dan, disguised as a priest.

Supposedly killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past.

To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness. But the last time they saw each other, Dan tried to shoot Ned dead.

So begins a brutal brotherly confrontation. Facing sins of their past, each blames the other for his downfall. And neither escapes unharmed.

History tells us that Dan and Ned never saw eye to eye and there is also myth that Dan escaped the fire and disappeared to Queensland. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, explored beautifully on stage, weaving Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship.

The township of Bodgy Creek has seen better days. The mill’s closed, the Tidy Town sign has fallen into the long grass and the weir is as dry as a spinster’s gusset. Damian tells the Roosters’ story through a variety of characters in this show, which earned him his 3rd Barry Award nomination for the best show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. The Merger is in development to be made into a feature film.

Exposing Edith is a breathtaking, intimate, original interpretation of vintage French pop songs made famous

by Edith Piaf. Performed by songstress Michaela Burger and accompanied on acoustic guitar by Greg Wain, Exposing Edith intertwines the authenticity of the era with contemporary instrumentation.

The music is interspersed with stories of Piaf’s life; the origin of the songs and voice that made her one of the most acclaimed French artists of all time. True stories from the men who flew in World War Two Based on his two best-selling books, Flak and Fly, Michael Veitch presents Flak, in which he takes on the roles of former airmen, recounting their extraordinary, true and largely untold stories of combat in the air war of 1939-45.

Veitch’s passion has always been the air war, and over the course of three years and two books he interviewed more than 50 pilots, bomb aimers and air gunners, almost all of whom had never revealed their wartime adventures to anyone, including, in some cases, their own families.

The stories they told are truly amazing.

Veitch has an academic background in history, but made his name with ABC’s cult hit The D Generation, followed by Fast Forward, Full Frontal and more. He is a regular guest presenter and interviewer on ABC morning radio.

An adventurous outsider, Robyn reluctantly accepts sponsorship from National Geographic magazine to follow her trek. She has to put up with the sporadic presence of photographer Rick (Adam Driver, Girls) but mostly she is alone with her animals in the outback.

Based on Robyn’s memoirs chronicling her nine-month journey, director John Curran filmed Tracks predominantly in the Flinders Ranges, SA.

In 2015, the Port Augusta Cultural Centre – Yarta Purtli and Ananguku Arts Statewide Indigenous Community Artist Development program are running a series of visual arts workshops for Indigenous communities in Port Augusta, Whyalla, Coober Pedy, Port Lincoln and Ceduna. The content of the workshops will be decided following community consultation with each of the communities to ensure that topics meet the needs of regional artists.

The aim of Our Mob Port Augusta is to create new works for a special exhibition to be on display at Yarta Purtli Gallery in Port Augusta, which will form part of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Festival and the Adelaide Festival Centre’s annual Our Mob exhibition based at the Art Space Gallery in Adelaide.

Project partners include: regional communities that are part of the project, Arts SA, Country Arts SA, Adelaide Festival Centre, Art Gallery of South Australia, and Ananguku Arts and Cultural Corporation.

Songbird the Magpie

Making Muna take part in a muna making skills development workshop.

Help create Songbird the Magpie, an inflatable, traditional story telling space.

In 2015, the township of Coober Pedy will become 100 years old.

Aboriginal artists and community members will partake in a three day â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Munaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (beanie) making skills development workshop in Ceduna.

To acknowledge the contribution of such a colourful community and to coincide with the Opal Festival, a project called Songbird the Magpie will engage and bring together many of the residents to help create an inflatable Magpie.

The Tjutjuna (Ceduna) Aboriginal Arts and Culture Centre will engage Coffin Bay artist Lorraine Boomer offering opportunities for up to 15 participants to join a crochet and sharing circle for learning, sharing culture and stories; and to offer support and bonding among Aboriginal women.

Eyes The world is an interesting place. Particularly places such as Roxby Downs where you can discover that theatre doesn’t need actors on a stage and the end of days could be much more than doomsday preppers and zombies.

The creative geniuses of Sandpit have teamed up with other cutting-edge artists to start developing a completely new type of experiential theatre in Roxby Downs. Following a residency and public consultations the team is inviting people to experience the works’ most current state of play.

Be prepared for state of the art sound design in your headphones while taking in the natural surrounds and find yourself deciding what should be preserved, what should be destroyed and what things you’d miss in the event of the apocalypse.
