Stars & Stone For Hall Inductees
Three performances honoring each of this year’s Country Music Hall of Fame inductees – John Anderson, James Burton and Toby Keith –had concluded at Sunday evening’s Medallion Ceremony (10/20) when CMHoF CEO Kyle Young indicated something out of the ordinary was about to take place. Before one final tribute rolled through, an already highwattage gathering of artists saluted the 153rd, 154th and 155th members of the Hall for what Young termed the “deep and distinctive stamp” each made on country music.

Anderson’s path began in Apopka, FL and, after moving to Nashville and taking a day job in construction, led to the Grand Ole Opry … or its roof, anyway. “People used to ask him if he’d ever been on the Opry, and he’d say ‘lots of times – every day for 10 months,’” laughed Bobby Braddock, who had the honor of inducting the “roofer with a reefer” in the Veterans Era Artist category. Musical performances began with Shawn Camp’s “I Just Came Home to Count the Memories,” Del McCoury Band’s “Would You Catch A Falling Star” and Lucinda Williams’ “Wild And Blue.” Reflecting on his journey to the Rotunda, Anderson said, “There were a lot of hills and valleys, twists and turns and dead stops, but there was a lot of adventure, and I wouldn’t change with anyone because it was my way.”
Modern Artist Era category inductee Keith forged a path that, like Anderson’s, often found him running along the edge. ”An outsider who didn’t play the Nashville game, but who was willing to roll the dice and face the consequences,” said Young. Post Malone opened the musical tributes with “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight” before Blake Shelton’s medley of “I Love This Bar” and “Red Solo Cup” and Eric Church’s “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” “I wish Toby were here to sing it, but I’ll do my best,” said Church.

Spotlighting inductees ahead of the Nov. 11 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala continues with Al Anderson. Anderson got his start in the ‘60s fronting the Wildweeds and subsequently spent more than 20 years as the lead guitarist for NRBQ. He broke into country songwriting with the Carlene Carter song “Every Little Thing” and went on to co-write “Unbelievable” (Diamond Rio), “Should’ve Asked Her Faster” (Ty England), “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” (The Mavericks) and “The Cowboy In Me” (Tim McGraw), among many others. It started with Elvis, who I first heard when I was nine, and the Everly Brothers, who are still the best ever. I’m from Connecticut and at night I could get WWVA/Wheeling, WV. Back then, you could get those trucker stations, so I listened to country first, then rock and roll came in. We knew Chet Atkins, Webb Pierce and all that stuff from WWVA. Eventually I found out about Ray Charles and learned to really play guitar from him. Leiber and Stoller are also heroes.

The Wildweeds were playing black clubs in Hartford. We were on Chess Records for three songs. They thought we were black. I learned all my chords from Ray, who is still the greatest of all time.

NRBQ was playing in California. Carlene Carter came to the gig and asked us to sing on one song, so we did. She came back the next night and wanted to write, so I flew back and wrote two songs with her. “Every Little Thing” was my first country hit, and “Something Already Gone” was in a movie. [Ed. Note: Maverick, staring Jodie Foster, James Garner and Mel Gibson.] Everybody knew who I was –even the country people came to see us at Ace of Clubs in downtown Nashville. I was way ahead of most of the players there. I swear to God, they couldn’t get to four chords. They thought I was great, but I wasn’t – I just knew all that stuff from Ray. Black music is where it’s at. Producers and other songwriters knew about me because they all liked NRBQ. People wanted to write with me immediately, and producers wanted to get me with their artists to write.
That’s how I found Bluewater’s Pat McMurry. I was still drinking at that point. We went to lunch and I told her I wanted $100,000. She said, ‘Nope, I’ll give you $12,000 and get you cuts.’ I would fly down from Connecticut to write in Nashville. Then Hal Ketchum wanted me to come to Santa Fe and write with him, and it’s beautiful. That’s how I ended up living here. But the music scene sucks. Old hippies.
Jeffrey Steele, Craig Wiseman and me wrote “The Cowboy In Me” in my Nashville condo. Jeffrey had it started and Craig and I helped him finish it. I never know if songs are going to be hits. I can’t figure that stuff out. But I always worked with people better than me, and they weren’t hard to find:: Steele, Craig, Tim Nichols, Vince Gill, Bob DiPiero, Gary Nicholson, Tia Sillers, Sharon Vaughn, Leslie Satcher, Barry Becket. I wrote 80 songs with Chris Stapleton starting as far back as 2000. I’ve played and written with thousands of people, but these are the ones I spent the most time with. And the ones I’m going to talk about at the event. –Chuck Aly
Chart Chat
Congratulations to Justin Moore, Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1. “This is My Dirt” is Moore’s 13th chart topper and sixth consecutive No. 1, which ties him for third among active streaks. Songwriters are Paul DiGiovanni, Randy Montana, Jeremy Stover and Moore.

Kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud crew on racking up 140 adds for Morgan Wallen’s “Love Somebody” to lead the CA/MB Add Board. His 15th release to top the Add Board is his largest add week ever and the third largest add week of the year. The song enters the chart at No. 28 this week, marking Wallen’s highest solo debut; it is just the 16th song this decade to debut in the top 30. Cumulus KBUL/Reno, NV will be added to the Country Aircheck/ Mediabase panel effective with the airplay week beginning October 20

OFF THE RECORD
BBRMG/Stoney Creek’s Madeline Merlo goes Off The Record about her new album, One House Down (From The Girl Next Door):

“Broken Heart Thing” is the first song off the project and explores the moments after a big heartbreak. This song is about adjusting to the new life you’ve stepped into after stepping away from a relationship. I thought it would be great to include a male voice, especially one as incredible as Dustin Lynch’s, on this song to capture those complicated emotions. Whether you are the breaker or the one getting broken up with that adjustment period is so hard.
The song on the project I’m most proud of, composition wise, is “Bar Fight.” It’s the ultimate battle between heart and mind. It flips perspectives between the mind, desperately trying to emotionally regulate the heart, and the heart being desperately sad. The result felt really raw and was the very first song written for the project.
“Middle Of The Bed” is a snapshot moment of a very niche emotion and situation. It’s about falling asleep feeling pretty good about the breakup … then waking up and wondering why they aren’t sleeping beside you. A moment where the subconscious is in the driver’s seat and that element feels so exciting to me as a creator. My producer, Zach Crowell, added a production that is as unique and unpredictable as the song. I love it because it doesn’t sound like anything else both lyrically and sonically.
The last song written for the EP, “Good Grief,” was the perfect bridge to lead us to the final track. This song is meant to be the anthem that encourages the listener that there is a purpose to all the pain they’re in. I wrote “Good Grief” imagining I was walking down the streets of New York City, post breakup, and knowing that this new path, although difficult, was the right one. This song is about acceptance and hope.
“One House Down,” the final (and title) track of the EP, ties the whole project together for me. It’s the concluding thought. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s falling in love with someone who loves you exactly the way you are. Reminiscent of early Keith Urban, and featuring a genuine Keith Urban solo on Waylon Jennings’ telecaster no less, this song is meant to leave the listener on a high.

Stars & Stone For Hall Inductees

Keith was inducted by Alabama’s Randy Owen, whose songs he covered in Oklahoma with his Easy Money Band. “The only rehearsals [Toby] ever did was when Alabama put out a new album,” said Tricia Covel, who accepted the medallion on behalf of her late husband. Having passed just one day after the CMA received the voting results, Keith never heard the news he was being inducted into the Hall. “Toby will live and be loved through his music and the legacy that he’s left,” said Covel, who closed with, “He knows now.”

The evening began with a recording of Merle Haggard’s “I’m A Lonesome Fugitive” and ended full Circle with a celebration of the man playing guitar on it, the “Master of the Telecaster,” James Burton. He was inducted by one of the kids who used to tune in to TV’s Ozzie and Harriet to see him play, Vince Gill. Recalling the time they received a less-than-enthusiastic reaction from the crowd at Elton John’s 1975 Dodger Stadium show, Emmylou Harris and Rodney
Crowell credited Burton for turning things around … literally. “He goes out to the edge of the stage, puts that guitar behind his back and starts playing,” said Crowell. “You could see some of those young people take their Elton John glasses off and go, ‘Wow.’”

Befitting his multi-genre, seven-decade long career, the newest musician in the Hall was celebrated by a diverse contingent of artists he’s worked with and/ or inspired: Elvis Costello with John Jorgenson (“Believe What You Say”), Brad Paisley (“Workin’ Man Blues”) and Gill, Harris and Crowell (“Til I Gain Control Again”). Topping it off with an unprecedented fourth performance was The Rolling Stone’s Keith Richards with Gill, Harris and the band’s current drummer Steve Jordan performing Gram Parson’s “I Can’t Dance.” It may have only been rock and roll, but the crowd liked it.
Joined by his granddaughter and grandson, Burton thanked the artists, calling everyone he’s worked with his heroes. The ceremony concluded with a Tanya Tucker-led performance of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken.” –Caitlin DeForest CAC

Austin Snell Still Bleeding (Deluxe) (River House/WAR)

Lanie Gardner A Songwriter’s Diary (BBRMG)
The 10-track debut album, penned entirely by Gardner, offers previously released tracks “Lord Knows” and “Mountains And Miller,” as well as new songs like “Somewhere, Nowhere In Carolina.” Of the latter, she says, “I was defeated and wanted nothing more than to be ‘somewhere’ back home and ‘nowhere’ in my career. Today, I write songs for my fans, my friends and my family who pulled me through such a dark time. But that day… I wrote a song for me.”
Anne Wilson Rebel (Live From Lexington) (Sparrow/EMI Nashville)
Recorded in June at the Lexington Opera House in her hometown of Lexington, KY, the 10-track live record features standouts from Rebel, as well as “My Jesus.”
